Meet the Twirlywoos!

If you have a toddler who likes to watch a bit of CBeebies then you may have seen them get super excited about the new TV show Twirlywoos. It's by the creators of In The Night Garden and Dip Dap, and is aimed at 3 to 4 year olds, and although it may not look like it to a grown up there is an educational concept behind the show.

Each episode has one theme like like "Full", or "Underneath", and the cutesy little characters explore the concept through observing, then imitating the action. The show's educational consultant explains more about how the show can help replicate the way that the target age group learn on the CBeebies Grown Ups page here.

I found it really interesting to read about this, as my toddler is nowhere near the target age group (he's not yet 2), but he has been transfixed each time the show has been on. He reacts in a way that he only does to a few things, like In The Night Garden, with smiles, giggles, copying the actions, and talking to the characters. We also get lots of shouts of "Duck" and quacking whenever they are on screen, but then he is very fond of ducks generally.

There are free games, clips, songs and so on at the Twirlywoos page on the CBeebies website if your child is old enough. With that and the wonderful "Bing" explaining about everyday toddler issues in such a fun way, these are two shows that I have no problem with my youngest watching while I make a start on the chores!
