Tomy Don't Wake Dad Action Game £7.99 RRP £14.99 @ Amazon

gameBoard games rock, don't they? There's nothing quite like hunkering down by the fire on a rainy afternoon with a hot cup of tea and a gaggle of excitable children, desperate to start squabbling over who's going to win.

This particular game, down from £14.99 to £7.99, was a hit with our boy-tribe and their relatives during the Christmas holidays. The premise of the game is simple enough that even the toddlers got it and it made all the kids erupt into the kind of helpless giggling that is totally infectious.

Basically you have to take it in turns (2-4 players) to sneak past the snoring Dad character in the centre of the board as you make your way to the kitchen for a midnight feast. Taking turns to spin the spinner, you move your play figure around the board trying not to land on the alarm clock which may wake up Dad and move you back to the start of the board. But your path is booby-trapped with an assortment of hazards that could wake Dad... and make your children scream with delight.

Unusually for board games these days, this gets really good reviews on Amazon. Parents often seem to find that games that they loved as children have become flimsier these days, or the game contents fails to live up to expectations based on the TV adverts or even the images on the box but in this case, most customergame2s seem to feel this was a brilliant buy. And at this price it strikes me as good value for money, too.

According to the manufacturer it's suitable for children aged 6 and up but the 3 and 4 year olds in our company loved it, so use your own discretion as to whether it's age-appropriate for whoever you have in mind. It requires x2 AA batteries which are not provided.
