Free Bus Travel For Kids August 2026: Everything Parents Need To Know

If you are looking for ways to keep the kids entertained on a budget this summer, the government has recently announced a new initiative to help. As part of the new 'Great British Summer Savings' scheme, there will be free bus travel for kids this August. We’ve combed through the small print to answer all your questions about who is eligible, how it works, and how much you can save.

What is the 'Great British Summer Savings' Bus Scheme?

  • The Deal: Every child aged 5 to 15 will get unlimited free travel on participating local buses.
  • The Dates: The scheme runs for the entire month, from August 1 to August 31, 2026.
  • The Location: This specific scheme applies to local buses across England.

Kids under 5 already travel free in England, and if you live in Scotland under 22s also travel free year round. In Wales, children under 5 travel free and those aged 5 to 21 can take advantage of the national £1 single bus fare and £3 day ticket scheme on participating services.

Do I need to register for the free bus travel?

The best news? No registration is required! Unlike other travel card schemes, parents do not need to fill out forms, download a specific app, or apply for a physical pass. Kids can simply hop on board participating local buses at no cost.

Which buses are participating?

The government has stated this applies to 'participating local bus services'. While the official master list of every single bus route is still being finalised, it is expected to cover the vast majority of standard local public transport networks. (PlayPennies Tip: We'd recommend asking the driver 'Are you participating in the free August kids scheme?' as you board just to be 100% sure)"

How much will families actually save?

According to government estimates, a family with two children making just one weekly return trip (normally costing around £1.50 per child fare) will save about £27 over the month of August. If you use the bus for daily summer holiday activities, those savings could really mount up.

BONUS: VAT Slashed on Kids' Meals & Days Out!

The free bus travel is only half the good news. To help families further, the government is alsoslashing VAT from 20% down to 5% from June 25 to September 1, 2026.

This discount applies to:

  • Children's meals in restaurants and cafes
  • Kids' and family tickets for cinemas, soft plays, and theatres
  • Entry tickets for theme parks, zoos, and museums

Are you planning to make the most of the free buses this August? Where will you be taking the kids? Let us know, and don't forget to share this post so no one misses out!
