Finding a safety gate for our lounge was a nightmare. I know all about the problems of getting safety gates to fit a door frame that isn't standard. We ended up paying a lot more than this for our extending gate though! Babies R Us has the Lindam Extending Metal Safety Gate £12.99, a reduction of £5 on the original price of £17.99. This is effectively free delivery, as the delivery charge on the site is £4.95.
We have French doors in the living room, and they're also the only 'windows' as well. Which meant that during the summer it was a necessity to have them open but the opening was wider than a normal. So ordinary gates didn't fit. I'd have loved something like this as we spent nearly £40 on something to secure the doors.
If you are in a similar position though I do have to warn you that you'll spend half your life fetching back items tossed out into the garden!
The website describes the gate as a "white extending gate is an ideal safety barrier for baby around the home." You do need to screw this gate onto the walls, but the advantage of doing this is that there is no trip bar along the bottom. And that's a vital point if you're fitting the gate at the top of the stairs.
Other features include a gate that can be opened with one hand and in both directions, and a redemption voucher for a free nightlight.
