Smyths Cancels This Year's Pre-Christmas Shopping Event

We know lots of you look forward to the yearly Smyths Toys pre-Christmas in-store shopping event, but it's now been officially confirmed - Smyths Toys £10 off £50 event will not be running in 2020.

The event traditionally happens in late September, but the Covid-19 pandemic lead to this decision from the toy retailer, saying that it cannot risk large volumes of shoppers flock to stores in a short period of time with social distancing in place. The cancellation of the event will apply to the retailer’s stores in both the UK and Ireland.

A Smyths spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, our 10 off every 50 promotion will not run for 2020. We cannot responsibly encourage a large volume of customers to visit our stores in a short time period while adhering to social distancing guidelines. However, we are excited to announce we will have more promotions and super savings on your favourite toy brands throughout the autumn-winter period.”

While the decision is understandable given the customer numbers usually seen in store for this shopping event, we are left wondering if they can replicate the savings any way.

The in-store spend and save offer was one of Smyths most popular offers, a major event in the Christmas toy shopping calendar, and a big help to parents looking to cut the price of their Christmas shopping. At the moment while they do have offers on specific toys online there's no sign of a blanket offer covering all toys that could replace it online.

With the loss of the Argos 3 for 2 Toy Sale as well as this cancellation from Smyths, where will you be buying you toys this Christmas? Will you be heading to the Argos toy sale, or hitting the budget online toy retailers like Bargain Max* instead? We would love to know what you think.
