If you’d like to cut the cost of rail travel for family days out or holidays, railcards are a great way to save. By registering your details, you’ll be sent a free 2 month card which you can use between the beginning of June until the end of July.
So how does it work? The minimum party size is one adult and one child between the ages of 5 and 15, with the maximum being 4 adults and 4 children of the same age. Children under 5 travel free on trains and are therefore excluded from this offer. However, if your child(ren) are 4 years or younger , you can get around this by purchasing one of them a ticket, so that the remaining adults travel at the discounted price. This is obviously only worth doing if the savings made are greater than the cost of the child ticket you could have had for free.
Railcards can be used to purchase tickets online, there’s usually a “Railcard” drop down menu and also at stations. Just be aware that depending on the number of people in your party and the length of your journey, there may be other railcards more suited to your needs. Apply for this freebie for sure but always compare prices online or ask for advice at the station before buying tickets.
There are various additional terms and conditions and these can be found HERE.
