Tempted By The Food Sniffer?

Tempted By The Food Sniffer?
17 April 2016

When it comes to feeding your family, how much attention do you pay to the 'best before' dates on food?

I'm a bit fussy and tend to err on the side of caution but I know a good few people who make a killing by stocking up at the supermarket on marked-down items that are close to their sell-by dates and then living a little dangerously.

I've no doubt that it's a good way to save money on supermarket shopping but the problem with that approach to cutting costs is how do you know if something is definitely still safe to eat?

Now there's a solution to that problem, as the Daily Mail reports:

"Now, there's a handheld gadget which claims it can 'sniff' out foul gases undetectable to the human nose. The FoodSniffer - on sale on the internet - can tell whether the uncooked chicken, meat and fish in our fridges is safe to eat. This is because food gives off gases as it decays. Using special sensors, the Foodsniffer - which costs £90 - 'smells' out the temperature and humidity of raw meat or fish, and also detects ammonia or any dangerous organic compounds lurking in the food."

I'm not sure I could be persuaded to part with £90 in order to save money by shopping for items that are close to their sell-by or best-before dates but we'd love to hear what you think about this nifty gadget.
