A new survey has revealed that more than half of pre or postnatal women have felt suicidal.
Postnatal depression affects one in every ten women within a year of giving birth. Symptoms can include feeling sad and tearful through to difficulty bonding with your baby and thoughts of harming yourself or your baby.
More than 1,000 women were surveyed and of those, 57% said they had contemplated taking their own lives.
The research was conducted by ITV news in partnership with PANDAS, a charity which helps parents living with prenatal/antenatal and postnatal illnesses.

Seek help – it's out there
You can get through this and make a full recovery to become the 'you' you used to be – but getting support early can make all the difference to how quickly you recover. Make a call today. Your health visitor or GP can help but if that's too much, tell your partner or a friend or family member how you are feeling and ask them to help you get the support you need.

Talking can help
It's probably the last thing you feel like doing but it can make a world of difference to share how you're really feeling. A problem shared is a problem halved.
You can contact the PANDAS helpline on 0843 28 98 401 or email their support team: email@example.com. Their team of trained volunteers are available seven days a week, 365 days a year and aim to respond to each email within 24 hours.
This week is also Pre & Post Natal Depression Awareness Week (#PNDAW16) in the UK. The PANDAS website states:
"Although mental health is being spoken about more than it ever has, pre and post natal mental illnesses are still left in the dark, given that 1 in 10 women and 1 in 3 men battle with these illnesses during parenthood. With your help, by talking about perinatal mental illnesses in its many forms during PND Awareness Week we can ensure that no parent going through these heartbreaking illnesses feels alone in their fight."
