I'm a bit of a sceptic when it comes to 'must have' lotions and potions for babies. And don't even get me started on so-called miracle creams for new mums that are meant to be able to banish everything from your muffin top to your stretch marks. Let's just say that I've tried a few in my time, and nothing makes much difference to my post-baby body apart from cutting down on eating crap and going for a run on a regular basis.
But. I have a new favourite product. I've already reviewed the Organic Children Berry Smoothie Shampoo and Conditioner from Green People* but they recently sent me some samples of products suitable for newborn babies and postnatal mums. Among them was something called Mum & Baby Rescue Balm (£9.95) which, to be honest, I didn't think I'd have much use for at first but since the birth of my baby almost four weeks ago this product has become the one item I don't leave home without. (Ok, except for a decent supply of nappies. They're pretty essential with a newborn too.)
I actually discovered the wonders of this product by accident. It's part of the new scent-free range from Organic Babies, and is billed as a 'rescue balm, gentle enough for mum and baby to share'. It's made with organic calendula and vitamin E to soothe, um, sore bits before and after breastfeeding, but it's also rich in organic shea butter to reduce dry skin, while the organic sunflower, sweet almond and hemp seed oil can help soften the perineum during pregnancy, as part of your preparation for birth. It's also suitable for those who may be prone to eczema and psoriasis, and is a 100% certified product, made with 91% certified organic ingredients.
As I've said, I didn't really feel I had any need of this product at first, so it didn't make it into my hospital bag. I had already bought the leading brand of hypoallergenic nipple cream, and had a handy travel-sized bottle of my favourite brand of moisturiser stashed in my make-up bag. I've never bothered paying any particular attention to my perineum during pregnancy (life's too short and frankly that bit's the least of my worries when it comes to giving birth) so this joined my collection of lotions and potions that I thought I could live without.
But then one day soon after giving birth - and in the grip of various agonising post-partum aches and pains - I reached for this Mum & Baby Rescue balm in desperation and, lo, it really did soothe the bits that get mega-sore when you're feeding a baby. I'd say it did as good a job (if not better) than the leading brand I've already mentioned. After that I read the packaging properly and then liberally slathered some on my baby's patches of dry skin, and it had a similarly miraculous effect. I've even used it on the first signs of nappy rash and it works wonders.
My absolutely favourite thing about this product is the fact that both baby and I can use it. It's unusual to find a product that's gentle enough to use on a newborn baby but highly effective on my old skin too, and I love that the two of us can use one product to fix all sorts of sore bits. It's a money saver for that reason too - I've done away with nipple cream, hand cream, and nappy rash cream now, and instead we just reach for this. Mum & Baby Rescue Balm well and truly lives up to its name. Now if only they could invent something to fix my stretch marks and do something about those bags under my eyes too...
Organic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm is made without Parabens, Lanolin, methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone, phthalates, artificial perfumes, petrochemicals and colourants. You can buy it direct from Green People, and I highly recommend this as a little gift for a new mum - it's the sort of product that no mum should be without.
