5 Tips for The Perfect Fake Tan

The Perfect Fake Tan

As the weather continues to warm, you’re likely thinking about your upcoming holidays more and more. And once you’ve got your tickets booked, passports sorted and kids out of school, it’s time for you to get ready! A tan, either subtle or dramatic, can help you avoid that leftover winter day glow look once you hit the beach.

But before you go ahead and slather on your favourite fake tan product, you’ll want to follow these tips and tricks. Whether you’re trying out a fake tan for the first time and need some pointers, or are a seasoned pro and need a refresher, these tips will help you get through the holiday season looking radiant.

Exfoliate!

If you’re even slightly familiar with fake tans, you’ll only that this is the cardinal rule. Be sure to use an oil-free exfoliant on your entire face and body before any application. Skinny Tan’s exfoliating mitt* can help make the job easy.

Equally as important, hair removal. Be sure to do this job the day before you apply any tanner, and certainly not afterwards as your tan will disappear along with your hair. Don’t let all that hard work go to waste!

Be wise as you moisturise.

Be sure to skip any moisturisers on body or face the day of application. If you have especially dry skin, be sure to keep it light, keep it to your face, and avoid formulations with oil at all costs. Also on the to-avoid list: perfume and deodorant.

The exception? You can apply some light moisturiser, such as Skinny Tan After Glow Gloss*, to elbows and knees. This will ensure that they don’t absorb as much of the product and promotes a nice, even tan.

Avoid orange hands.

We’ve all heard stories of discoloured hands, or have experienced them ourselves. But it doesn’t have to happen: Skinny Tan has a tanning mitt* (or a mini-mitt for face*) for this particular reason. Get one in a set with your favourite tanner* and use it for application.

Just be sure to use a sweeping, rather than circular, motion from your ankles up to get a smooth application.

Go for the right type.

Choosing the right type of self-tanner comes down to skin type, preference, and goals. If you’re a first-time tanner looking for a holiday glow, a gradual tanner* that builds up more each day might be best for you. A mousse formulation* also has the advantage of being quick and easy to apply for tanning newbies.

Instant tanners* will be best for that glam look for a night out when you’re already travelling, and will wash away with your next shower. Finally, if you’re battling dry skin, look for an oil or lotion for extra moisture*.

5 Tips for The Perfect Fake Tan

Don’t forget your face.

Applying fake tanner to your face is a different animal, and you’ll want to be sure that you’re not overdoing it. Mix your chosen tanner with a little bit of moisturiser to lighten it up before applying with a mitt. And if you have light hair, be sure to protect your hairline and eyebrows from dye with aloe vera gel.

Then take whatever product you have left on the mitt and sweep over hands and feet just once for a natural, never overdone look.

With these tips, you’ll be beach-ready without looking too orange! For even more holiday glam, Skinny Tan has a new product, their Bum Booster*, specifically for bum and thighs. They’ve got only 1,000 tubs of this new body butter available for pre-launch, just in time for you to pamper yourself before heading out for your next family holiday.
