how much weight should newborns loose...

... in the first few days? My friens baby has lost 8% body weight. is that right? he's 7 days old

If a baby loses 10% or more of birth weight the midwife will be concerned, of course some will get concerned earlier if there are other signs of failure to thrive such as dehydration and excessive sleepiness, no poop or pee etc. If you have a lot of fluids during delivery or baby did a huge poop immediately after delivery then you can see that this will affect the birth weight significantly and show a greater loss right afterwards. I'd say feed, feed, feed and keep an eye on nappies.
