My son zips about on his Micro Scooter, inherited from his older brother. I heartily recommend them, especially for days out. Or even just trips to the playground. I don't know about other kids, but mine runs himself ragged and leaves nothing at all for the walk home. So a five minute trip can take half an hour of feet dragging and 'I'm tired!'. Not a lot of fun. 
With his scooter though he can zip along on the way there, and then I raise the handlebar and pull him on the way back! It is also a huge help to me on trips to the shops. On the way back, as he runs along I can put my shopping bags on the handles.
