"52 Reasons I Love You" Cards

They say we 'perceive' love in one of five ways - through gifts, acts of service, words of affirmation, quality time and physical affection. If your other half is of the 'words of affirmation' variety, they'll love hearing why you love them.  Click on the image - you'll find a step by step tutorial on how to make these cards.

Love Hearts Valentine's Range Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 7 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Love Hearts Valentine's Range ReviewDo you know who makes those little Love Hearts sweets? Just in case you don't know what I mean, those are the little round sweets with messages on them, like True Love and Be Mine. They're made by a company called Swizzels Matlow. Now that's a pretty cool name, to me anyway. They also make Parma Violets, Drumsticks and Refreshers. Yum, yum and double yum. But Love Hearts are my favourite - so full of fruity, fizzy, chalky, sugary goodness.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. I think it is totally unfair they've stuck it in the middle of half term mind you. If you've got kids it is harder to get romantic in the evening when you've spent the day looking at dinosaurs and queueing in the Natural History Museum. Mind you, when you've got kids it is harder to get romantic full stop.

It seems quite natural that there's a special range of Love Heart's products specially for Valentine's Day. The new range of Love Heart's is pretty cool. If you like these sweets (and make sure your loved one does before giving them!) then they make a fabulous alternative to the usual box of chocolates or a bunch of over priced roses. I know what I'd prefer! I received three items for review.

Love Is - It's Your Story Book Review

by Sarah Macdonald in Reviews on 1 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Love Is - It's Your Story Book ReviewIf you're of a certain age you'll remember the two Love Is characters - that cute little naked cartoon couple, whose modesty always remained intact, and were clearly very much in love with each other.  The love bird pair were very popular in the 1970s and earned their creator, Kim Casali, between £4 and £5 million a year - not bad for some cartoon drawings!

Well, the Love Is duo seem to be making a bit of a comeback and with Valentines Day just a couple of weeks away, a personalised book featuring the Love Is characters makes for a soft and smoochy gift for the one you love.

It's Your Story specialise in personalised books and invited me to create a personalised Love Is story book - here's how I got on from start to finish.

Fabulous Ideas For Valentine's Day Breakfast

by Lynley Oram in Features on 30 January, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Fabulous Ideas For Valentine's Day BreakfastOnce you've got kids, things like Valentine's Day don't have quite the same sort of romantic resonance they used to. You, your partner, plus 2.4 kids and a dog don't quite make for the same luxurious love-fest you might once have enjoyed.

But the kids are only around for a little while, and you can inject some of your own romantic fun in there too. But it is also a good chance to have a bit of family fun too.

And making a big, fun, extra-ordinary breakfast is a good way of keeping the kids occupied too. I don't know how you do it, but in our house we decided to alternate Valentine's Day and our anniversary. So one of us gets spoiled with a sleep in, breakfast in bed, and some quiet time with the kids rushed out of the house if the day falls on a weekend. Or the school run covered if it is a week day.

And of course we have our special Valentine's Day breakfast. If you do this too, I have just one word of advice. Make sure that you include a cleaning up and washing up clause in your agreement, so you don't come downstairs all rested and relaxed to a wreck of a kitchen!

Thorntons Valentine's Day Gifts Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 25 January, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Thorntons Valentine's Day Gifts ReviewMy view is that if you're going to say anything on Valentine's Day say it with chocolates. Well that might just be me, but I can't be the only person who loves nothing more than cuddling up with a chocolatey treat?

Personally I think that all chocolates are pretty much right for Valentine's Day, you don't actually need to make a special range with that as the theme. Especially if you're a chocoletier named Thorntons. But no. It would seem that not satisfied with making some of the most delicious chocolate treats known to mankind, they also have to make some stuff specially for this one particular day of the year.

I received three items from the range for review, and I have to say I gave them a thorough testing! What I found interesting is that these are not expensive sweets or chocolates. In fact, they were all priced at less than a fiver. A nice way perhaps to add that little bit extra to your day when you're on a budget.

Half Price Valentine's Gifts @ Morrisons

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 12 February, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Half Price Valentine's Gifts @ Morrisons

I'm all about the expression of love on a budget at the moment, it seems, and here are some better than half prince or half price Valentine's gifts from Morrisons.

If you're anything like some people I know, you've not yet done anything for Valentine's day. Fortunately Morrison's have a few items you might find useful. Their gifts are divided into Gifts for Him, Gifts for Her, and some lovely Bouquets. Not all items are on sale, but all are still pretty well priced.

Under 'Gifts for Him' you'll find a giant Meerkat Valentine's card, (half price at £1.50), - it's cute, but not sickly sweet - two heart Valentine's Crackers containing fridge magnets and a 'fun' dice game (£3), and if your man's a big softy, a cute little 'I love you Monkey'. (£3)

If you're shopping for Her a bottle of (my absolutely favourite, in case you wanted to know) Nicolas Feuilatte Champagne is better than half price at £14, instead of £28.59. A ladies cami & knicker set in sizes 8 – 20 are £10, which is full price, but still pretty good value. Thornton's Premium Collection are an indulgent pleasure of milk, dark and white chocolates are down to £5 instead of £11.99.

There are twelve boquets to choose from, with the Grand Gala Rose Bouquet at £7.50 instead of £15. If your partner isn't into roses there are others, including the From the Heart Bouquet with a mix of red calypsos, exotic greenery and oriental lillies for £10. If you're really on a budget, there are two £5 bouquets and a single rose will cost you just £2.

And in the end, it's really more about the token of love than the gift, so just enjoy your loved one and have a wonderful day.

Tatty Teddy Luxury Chocolate Collection Review

by Sarah Macdonald in Reviews on 10 February, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Tatty Teddy Luxury Chocolate Collection ReviewIt's Valentine's Day soon and that, invariably, means CHOCOLATES!

There's nothing quite like being given a big kiss, then an even bigger hug followed by a box of chocolates from the person you love most in the whole world.

Well actually there is - it's being given a box of these lovely Tatty Teddy Luxury Chocolates; there's a blue version for boys and a pink version for us girls, the contents of both is exactly the same.

I've been paying attention to all the different boxes of chocolates on sale in Tesco (as that's where I tend to shop) and there are all the usual suspects to choose from - Milk Tray, Thorntons, Lindt et al.

They're all undeniably tasty, I know because I've tried them, but they've got one important ingredient missing - ROMANCE.

My heart melted the moment I saw this Tatty Teddy Luxury Chocolate Collection box; the little black-eyed, blue-nosed teddy peeking through a clutched bunch of roses is impossible not to love; there really is no comparison between this one and the others.

Inside, the obligatory black tissue paper is stuck together with a blue 'Me To You' sticker and the little booklet that tells which each flavour is has a smaller version of the box picture printed on the front, just in case you missed how cute it was the first time.

There are 15 chocolates in a box; each box costs £4.99 and is available from selected Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons stores along with other quality independent shops.

There are nine different flavours: Almond & Marzipan, Chewy Toffee, Hazelnut Truffle, Strawberry Parfait, Golden Caramel (this one has the 'Me To You' logo on the top), Orange Cream, Chocolate Truffle, Coffee Mousse and Nougat.

There are two of most flavours and the Hazelnut and Chocolate Truffles are coated with white chocolate.

Each chocolate is wonderful (this was a tough review, I mean really you have no idea what a hardship it was to do), there is a nice mix of dark, white and milk chocolates and all the usual favourite centres. Not only that, and it pains me to say it, yes, I can even recommend the Coffee Mousse flavour and I usually give the coffee ones away to someone else!

No you won't find a double layer in this Tatty Teddy Luxury Chocolate Collection and, yes, there are only 15 chocolates but there's something about that, combined with the complete and utter CUTENESS of the box, which is what makes it feel so special.

The chocolates are long gone from the Tatty Teddy Luxury Chocolate Collection that I was sent but I still have the box, I just can't bring myself to throw it away!

I hope you're lucky enough to get a box of your own for Valentine's Day.

Find Me A Gift Valentine Collection Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 8 February, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Find Me A Gift Valentine Collection ReviewAh Valentine's Day! Well if you're not already sorted, or are just now thinking you might need to look at suitable gifts, here's a couple of ideas. These come from Find Me A Gift, a website that I often to go to when I'm looking for something a little bit off beat, a little bit different or a little bit kitsch.

So we got two items in for review. Something that's lovely and something that's definitely off beat! A present for her, and a present for him. I gave them to our reviewer Caitlin to try out. With a pre-schooler, Caitlin and her husband have to work hard to get some time together for a bit of romance. What would they think of these gifts? Here's what Caitlin had to say.

Find Me A Gift Valentine Collection Review

The Love Slanket

The Love Slanket 24.99) is just awesome. A stunning shade of red that hints at pink with gigantic big hearts splattered across the fabric it is a warm and toasty snuggle spot of joy. I whipped it out for work and TV snuggling and refuse to take it off during the day. I waft about the house like a mad prince with the blanket trailing behind me. My daughter has stolen it. But it is definitely not for boys - my husband shied away from it and hissed like a vampire would at the sunlight.

Positives: warm and toasty, easy to use, great armholes and the pocket at the front is ideal for pens while working or sweeties while watching TV. It is the ultimate relax and love yourself item. soft and scrummy

Negatives: I didn't like the smell when it first arrived and it was quite stiff so I washed it and used liberal amounts of fabric softener. After that it was perfect. It is pricey though; you are paying for the novelty value.

Overall: it is warm and toasty so does what it should and the cuteness and madness of it all is ultimately deserving of the price.

Find Me A Gift Valentine Collection ReviewSecret message arrow

This is one sturdy arrow. The Secret Message Arrow comes in a cardboard box with gold foil twists to hold it in place, and when you open it the little pieces of paper for your messages fall all over the place.

The packaging got a definite down thumb for me, but the arrow itself is fantastic. Heavy and solid, great quality and just an ace idea. The concept is to take one of the provided pieces of paper (small and square and there are five of them) write a love message on it, roll it up and put it inside the arrow.

Let me tell you, rolling up that piece of paper until it was small enough to fit into the arrow head was a monumental excercise and very difficult. It took me four tries and by the time I had it small enough, it looked like it had been eaten by a bear. Also, make sure you put the note in arrow head or it will get pushed down inside the arrow and you will never see it again!

Other than rolling up the paper this was dead easy to do. The head screws off effortlessly and the arrow looks fantastic. I wasn't sure I would like this item but it completely won me over as an incredibly cute and unusual gift.

Positives: it is heavy and solid and beautiful and the messages can be anything you like. It is reusable; it is a good price point; and you can cut extra pieces of paper in different colours (use originals as size matches) and keep on giving each other special arrow messages. It is a gift that keeps on giving.

Negatives: rolling up that piece of awkward paper

Overall: brilliant Valentine gift at an excellent price point

And finally ...

These are just two ideas. The site has pages of gift ideas for Valentine's Day. If you fancy a bit more togetherness, you could try out the double Slanket!

Valentine's Day Perfume Offers @ Boots

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 5 February, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Valentine's Day Perfume Offers @ BootsWith only nine days left until Valentine's Day, hurrah for Boots and their 'Large Bottle, Smaller Price' deals on selected perfumes and aftershave.

Getting perfume (or aftershave if you're a PlayPennies dad) is always lovely, as long as it's one of your favourites of course, but it's even MORE lovely to get a HUGE bottle of it.

If you pop over to Boots there are lots of everyone's favourites on offer in their large sizes, but you'll only pay what you would for the small version.

For example, Vera Wang 'Princess' (100ml) will cost you £43.92 instead of £57 - we reviewed this perfume a year ago and it got a big thumbs up from everyone, it's lovely.

One of my favourite aftershaves is 'Boss for Men' by Hugo Boss, 100mls would normally set you back £45.00 but with this Boots perfume offer it will only cost you £35.75.

There are Boss perfumes for women on offer too, Calvin Klein, Lacoste, Georgio Armani, Diesel and all the other usual suspects - there's bound to be something here for you that will earn you some Valentine's Day brownie points.

You can have your choice(s) delivered or you can arrange to collect in-store for free.

Guess How Much I Love You Sweetheart Edition £5.24 @ Amazon

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 5 February, 2011 at 8:00 am

Guess How Much I Love You Sweetheart Edition £5.24 @ AmazonAmazon have taken a little bit off the price of this Guess How Much I Love You Sweetheart Edition, and reduced it from £7.99 to £5.24.

If you're a regular here at PlayPennies then you may have fallen fowl of Amazon's sneaky price fiddling once or twice.

We can never tell which ones they're going to mess with and when but you know, this Guess How Much I Love You Sweetheart Edition is THAT beautiful, I think anyone who fell in love with this story as a child would happily pay the full £7.99 anyway.

The story inside is the same Guess How Much I Love You that we all know and love, it's just the outer cover that's different and been designed to give to a grown-up.

The Guess How Much I Love You Sweetheart Edition is hardbacked and been bound in red-cloth - perfect to give to the one you love this Valentine's Day (I would literally melt if my husband bought this for me) or to a parent who read Guess How Much I Love You to you as a child.

Every reviewer on Amazon has given it five stars...

"I bought this book as a present for my mother. As a child she read this book to me and so when I saw this sweet heart edition I knew it would be the perfect present.

On my mothers birthday she opened various gifts from friends and family which included the usual things, jewellery, chocolates, flowers etc. On opening my present her eyes filled with tears and she had the biggest smile. The simple yet striking front cover of this book really does make it perfect as a gift."

Guess how much I love this sweetheart edition?  LOTS!
