by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 2 March, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Meccano Build And Play Plane £8.49 @ Argos

Argos has put this ace Meccano kit into their lovely free delivery category and they’ve marked it down to less than half price. You would have paid £19.99 plus delivery charges, but now you only pay £8.49 all inclusive. Nice.

The Meccano build and play plane set is pretty darn cool and a brilliant way of encouraging kids to think in three dimensions and develop their problem solving skills too. The plane uses flexible and strong plastic pieces in fun colours with screws and bolts to connect them.

I remember having loads of fun with Meccano when I was a kid and this brings back so many memories! The pieces included in this kit will let you build five different designs from a plane to a car to a racing car. You even get stickers so you can change the eyes and personalise your toys.

The Meccano build and play plane has 130 different parts in the box and is suitable for kids over the age of five.

Barbie Lifeguard Set £10.49 @ Argos

Argos has reduced the Barbie Lifeguard set down from £22.99 to only £10.49 and it comes with their very rare free delivery offer too. This is a very tasty saving of less than half the original price and the free delivery really puts the cherry on the cake.

Kids can use the Barbie lifeguard set to play the role of a little pink lifeguard. Included in the box is a special code that can be used to unlock career themed content online so kids can really build on their game with extra features and ideas.

The Barbie lifeguard set also has a button on the lifeguard chair so, when pressed, it shoots Barbie out of the chair and off to rescue someone from the sea. The kit also includes a dolphin and a life jacket, because yes, dolphins are an essential tool in any lifeguard kit…

Moshi Monsters Mosh N Chat Katsuma £13.84 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 1 March, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Moshi Monsters Mosh N Chat Katsuma £13.84 @ Amazon

Amazon has reduced the very expensive (and cool) Mosh n Chat Katsuma from the Moshi Monsters range of toys. It usually costs around £22.50 but they have dropped the price to £13.84 which is a saving of £8.66. You also get free delivery included in the price.

The Mosh n Chat Katsuma doll is a nonstop chatterbox. And it really is! We got this for our daughter for Christmas and eventually even she turned him off as he didn’t stop talking! If you squeeze his tummy he will giggle or start a conversation and the more you talk to him, the more he talks back.

The Mosh n Chat Katsuma isn’t just a talking to and fro doll though. You can set him to guard your room and with his built-in sensor he can detect when someone is nearby and then starts to make an almighty racket when he does. He needs three AAA batteries to keep him going but you do have demo ones included in the price.

Disney Pixar Toy Story 3 Mr & Mrs Potato Head £4.99 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 28 February, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Disney Pixar Toy Story 3 Mr & Mrs Potato Head £4.99 @ Argos

Argos is on fire this week! Another lovely discount here and this time it is for Mr and Mrs Potato Head from Toy Story 3. I believe that the price of £4.99, down from £10.19, is per item and not for both though, so the title may be misleading.

Kids can enjoy learning about parts of the face with this mix and match toy from Toy Story 3. You can choose from either Mr or Mrs Potato Head (aaah, should have read this bit first…) and spend many happy hours rearranging their face with all of the included parts.

The deal is actually so good that you can buy both Mr and Mrs Potato Head for less than you would have bought one of them at the original price. Nice bargain that!

You can change their moods, put their eyes on upside down, choose their hats and plenty more. Enjoy!

Barbie Doll And Beetle £19.99 @ Smyths

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 28 February, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Barbie Doll And Beetle £19.99 @ Smyths

Smyths has reduced this pretty cool Barbie and Beetle set down from £39.99 to £19.99 which is a whopping saving of £20 off the original price. For fans of Barbie or those of you hunting for a cool birthday pressie for you little ones, this is a great choice.

The Barbie and Beetle set comes with one dolled up Barbie doll and a bright pink beetle. Barbie can cruise around in ultra glam style. The car features shiny metallic wheels, signature Barbie seats, a Barbie logo license plate, holofoil lights and a sunroof.

Simply pop your Barbies into their car and zoot them about town for some fun. I must admit that the picture looks like the Barbie is too big for the car but I am assuming that it is big enough for her and one other to fit in it. Otherwise what would be the point? Either way, this is a great price for a product that usually costs the Earth.

My Baby All Clean Doll £7.40 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 28 February, 2012 at 3:00 pm

My Baby All Clean Doll £7.40 @ Amazon

Amazon has reduced the My Baby All Clean Doll from £24.99 to only £7.40, a huge saving of £17.59 off the original price. It may not be the world’s prettiest doll but for that price, it is certainly worth getting and sneaking into your Present Cupboard.

The My Baby All Clean Doll is also eligible for Amazon’s free delivery service so you only pay the measly £7.50 for all the features here. So, what does this doll do that makes it worth £24.99?

The My Baby All Clean doll comes with a bottle and a wiper to magically clean her up. She makes silly sounds and says cute phrases so kids can feel as if she is interacting with them. However, the bit that makes me laugh out loud is that they say she uses her nappy in an innovative way.

And what is this “innovative” way I hear you asking? Apparently she makes NO mess but uses lights instead. How disturbing is that? A light show down there instead of the usual mess you’d associate with nappies.

Create A World Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 28 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Create A World ReviewMy son lives in his imagination. A little bit too much at times. Imaginative play then is something that I've had a great deal of experience of. Just the very name of this toy, Create A World (£49.95), resonated with me. That's pretty much what my son does - creates a whole world in his head that to me looks like a bit of material scattered on the floor and some Lego bricks.

Which made me think though, is there really a point to, or a need for, a toy that does essentially the same thing? This got me curious enough to want to try one out for ourselves. Create A World comes from Whitestep, an online store I've come to know quite well having now bought three of their Flexibaths as gifts.

The store doesn't sell a lot of items, but what is available appear to be well designed, well built and simply lovely to look at. Even when it comes to utility items like a baby bath!

Is Create A World a worthwhile addition to the kid's playtime? Or is it the sort of toy that parents love to buy but children aren't so keen to play with? The only way to find out was to try the toy out. For this I roped in two young testers. Twins, one boy and one girl, aged four years old. Here's how they got on.

Bop It XT £17.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 27 February, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Bop It XT £17.99 @ Play.com

Play has just reduced the Bop It XT from £29.99 to only £17.99 which is a saving of £12. This also comes with their standard free delivery, although they tend to take ages to post things off to you.

I bought a Bop It way back when and I absolutely loved it. The most addictive game I think I have ever played and it kept me entertained for hours on a very long and tedious drive to the coast. The poor thing eventually gave up the ghost (and my husband begged me to stop playing it) and then disappeared.

This is the latest in the Bop It series and has all sorts of extra bits and pieces, like a headphone jack so you don’t irritate the hell out of your family (and husbands). You bop it, pull it, twist it, flick it, spin it and shake it here and you can either play solo or in party mode. It comes with instructions, is brilliant for co-ordination and memory and reflex development and can be played by anyone over the age of eight.

Zhu Zhu Pizazz Playset £14.99 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 26 February, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Zhu Zhu Pizazz Playset £14.99 @ Argos

Wow, Argos really is the hot spot today with tons of deals and discounts in the kids ranges. I have been hard pressed to choose from the best of them and this one definitely fits the bill. They have marked the Zhu Zhu Pizazz playset down from £29.99 to only £14.99 which is really good.

I must confess that the entire Zhu Zhu range has bored me to tears now and that I find their playsets and extras really expensive. However, this particular deal seems pretty good to me as you’re saving a ton of cash and paying (what I think) it is really worth.

The Zhu Zhu hamster Pizazz playset is a hotel carry case and coupe car for the most stylish hamster in town. The set includes Pinky the hamster, a hotel carry case, a coupe car, a carry bag and a blanket. It amuses me that they say that it includes a pink hamster and then that colours may vary. Ha!

My Baby Alive Blonde Real As Can Be Doll £22.49 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 26 February, 2012 at 3:00 pm

My Baby Alive Blonde Real As Can Be Doll £22.49 @ Argos

The My Baby Alive Real as can be Doll has been reduced from £44.99 to £22.99 at Argos. Why is this toy so expensive? Well, apparently it has all sorts of lifelike features and extras that make her something special and a brilliant gift for your little one on their birthday.

The My Baby Alive blonde Real As Can Be doll has incredibly lifelike functions and features such as speech and sound effects. Just like a real baby, she can eat, drink, pee and poo! With gorgeous blonde curls and a sweet little face, your offspring is bound to love her to pieces.

The hair can be styled and the entire set comes with a bottle, spoon, bowl, two food packets, a bib and two diapers. The doll does need two AA batteries but they are included in the price so you won’t need to get those at first. She certainly seems pretty cool but I am not sure I want a doll that poops…

Chad Valley Glow In The Dark Fairy Set £3.49 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 26 February, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Chad Valley Glow In The Dark Fairy Set £3.49 @ Argos

Argos has reduced the Chad Valley Glow in the Dark Fairy Set from £9.99 to £3.49, less than half the original price. It is out of stock for home delivery but you can reserve and collect it instore.

This glow in the dark fairy set is pretty cool. Actually, I’ve never grown out of the whole “glow in the dark is cool” thing so this fairy kit really appeals to me and I’ve reserved one for my daughter.

Kids can light up their rooms with this great Chad Valley set. The kit includes glow in the dark stickers or you can project different fairy images onto the wall. The set has glow in the dark fairy stickers, a 3D mobile and a fairy magic torch with different lens caps.

You will need to add in two AA batteries, presumably for the torch, and the kit is ideal for kids aged 4 to 12 years old.

Toy Story Sing N' Yodel Jessie Doll £15 @ The Disney Store

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 26 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

Toy Story Sing N' Yodel Jessie Doll £15 @ The Disney StoreThis is the lowest price I could find for the Toy Story Sing n' Yodel Jessie Doll. The Disney Store has reduced it from £25 to £15. The best I could find elsewhere was £20. You still have to pay delivery of £4.95. It has been reported that the toy is available instore as well at this price, so if there's a Disney Store near you it might be well worth a phone call.

The other toys in the singing/talking range are still priced at £25 unfortunately. It looks like only Jessie is reduced at the moment. She's a great character. We first meet Jessie in Toy Story 2, when she's been locked up in storage for years. Then she joins Woody and the gang to become one of Andy's toys. She's known for her adventerous nature and her ability to yodel.

This doll looks, and sounds, just like feisty cowgirl Jessie from Toy Story. With a rag doll style body, detailed rubber head and removable hat, there's also a string on her back which makes her speak film phrases and yodel too!

Jessie speaks 21 phrases, and measures 45cm high and 17.5cm wide. The toy takes two AAA batteries, which are included. Jessie is suitable for children aged two to eight years old.

Science Museum Strength Ball £3.49 @ Argos

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 25 February, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Science Museum Strength Ball £3.49 @ ArgosThe Science Museum Strength Ball has been reduced to less than half price at Argos. It is down from £9.99 to £3.49. You will have to check on availability for instore pickup as it is no longer available for home delivery. When I checked five stores close to me still had stocks.

This is something that's fun, but also a great way to build up a bit of strength. Older boys and girls may find it most useful. And grown ups too. My godson has a bit of a problem that means the muscle tone in his arms can be lower than normal, so things like this are particularly good.

According to the website, the ball can make "working out fun, he can get to grips with this quirky strength ball".  I don't know why they think only a 'he' is going to be working out. It further describes the ball as an addictive and challenging competitive gadget from Science Museum, and the most enjoyable way to strengthen and exercise your forearm and hand-grip.

To get it working, you switch on the LCD Revometer, and using the pull cord provided, spin the internal gyro. Find out how many revs can you build by spinning your wrists. The record stands at over 14,000 RPM. As the revs build so does the torque, making it a real challenge to control.

It does require batteries - specifically 2 x LR41. The ball is suitable for ages 10 years and over.

Fisher Price Thomas the Tank Engine Take 'N' Play 4 Pack £8.99 @ Play.com

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 25 February, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Fisher Price Thomas the Tank Engine Take 'N' Play 4 Pack £8.99 @ Play.comThis Fisher Price Thomas the Tank Engine Take 'N' Play 4 Pack has been reduced to £8.99, down from the RRP of £17.99. That's a saving of £9.

Each item in this assortment includes one of your favorite Thomas and Friends engines with special cargo cars. Made of durable die-cast with magnet connectors that connect either way. Perfect for Take-n-Play Portable Fold-Out Playsets and vehicles.

I don't know from the product description what sort of range of engines they have. The one in the picture on the page is Thomas & the Bees. It just says you'll get 'one' of your favourite engines, not whether they're all Thomas engines, or whether you'll get a variety of them. If you've got a Thomas fan who's really particular then this might not be worth a punt.

However, it is an excellent pack to get at this price for the present drawer. And the prices on Play.com include delivery for the UK.

The pack in the picture appears to have an engine, plus three additional carriages. But even though I know it is a good price for a Thomas toy - engines alone are usually priced around the £6 mark in this range in the shops - it still galls me. I mean, you just don't really seem to get an awful lot of toy for what you pay do you? Still, when it comes to Thomas you've got little alternatives and at least the build quality is excellent.

Scooby Doo Mystery Mansion With Goo Turret £17.99 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 24 February, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Scooby Doo Mystery Mansion With Goo Turret £17.99 @ Argos

This is an awesome toy and the reduced price is pretty darn sweet too. Down from £39.99 to only £17.99, this Scooby Doo Mystery Mansion kit is less than half the original price and packed with all sorts of awesome features. A perfect gift for the Scooby fan.

Scooby Doo and his friends can have hours of adventures trapped inside the spooky Mystery Mansion. One wing of the house even features a goo turret that oozes down the goo-goyles… Brilliant. I SO want this toy!

You can put one of the mystery figures under the clock tower and watch them get covered in goo or just race around the various rooms to see what they hold in store. The reviews on this product are mixed. It is pretty cool and has lots of ace features but apparently it is quite flimsy and doesn’t stay together that well.

3 Tier Toy Basket Storage Unit £14.65 @ Argos

3 Tier Toy Basket Storage Unit £14.65 @ Argos

Argos has reduced this cute little toy storage basket set from £16.99 to only £14.65, a saving of over £12 which is very helpful indeed. The unit is bright and colourful and ideal for putting away all those pesky toys.

The three tier toy storage set comes with nine baskets (based on the image here) in a variety of different colours. It sports a natural wooden frame and the storage bins come in red, yellow and blue.

The unit is 65x64.5x30xcm in size and weighs around 4.5kgs before you’ve popped anything into it. The baskets appear to be fabric ones which makes them fairly easy to keep clean but are not as easy to fix as plastic or wooden baskets.

If you don’t fancy the storage baskets in the primary colours, there is also a three tier wooden toy basket storage unit in pastel colours (pink and purple) on sale for the same price at Argos right now.
