I have a confession to make: I’ve never read the Very Hungry Caterpillar! I have no idea what the story is about – although I assume it’s a bug that eats a lot – and I have no idea what I’m apparently missing out on in this book. Don’t feel too sorry for me, I grew up with other classics.

This is a counting book, not the original story book, and while that was fine for some of the reviewers who were able to recall and adapt the story to meet their child’s age, it was a big disappointment to others who were after the actual story.

Apparently this is a cardboard paged book, ideal for younger readers,  who can count along and identify colours with the finger puppet that wriggle his way through the book.

The book consists of 14 pages, and has a 3.8 out of 5 star rating by Amazon reviewers.

Did you know that The Very Hungry Caterpillar was first published in 1969?  His story is stuff of legend and I don't know anyone who didn't enjoy reading about his cake, salami and watermelon munching antics when they were a child.

I've not heard of anyone who poked their fingers through the holes in the pages, put the book down after the Very Hungry Caterpillar had emerged as a beautiful butterfly and said, "actually...that was a bit rubbish, I don't think I'll bother reading that again."

I think it should be passed as law that every child in the country, no - let's make it the WORLD - has at least one Very Hungry Caterpillar something from as early on in their lives as possible.

Just because you and I know about the Very Hungry Caterpillar that doesn’t mean that EVERYONE does, and I feel it’s my social responsibility to make sure that no one slips through the net!

For his first birthday my son recieved a hard board copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I read that book to him every day for the next eighteen months. He loved it, and I love this book too. This is a really lovely presentation of the story, with a finger puppet caterpillar to follow through the holes. And Amazon has it reduced to £1.99, from £7.99.

I heartily recommend this for any toddler, or as a lovely present for a toddler. It's an excellent piece of storytelling. My son would sit riveted right up to the beautiful butterfly. It taught him the days of the week, and importantly how these days always followed in sequence, and it taught him colours. We used fingers to pretend to be the worm going through the holes, so I know he'd have loved the holes.

The most fun bit, for me anyway, is the bit where the caterpiller really pigs out, which we'd have to read at breakneck speed all in one breath. Made even more tricky by my husband's refusal to teach his son that a hot dog was a sausage so we had to say 'and a sausage that's really a hot dog', and the same with the pickle - 'and a pickle that's really a gherkin'.
