Did you know there’s a new Gruffalo DVD out this week too? The 13^th of Feb sees the Gruffalo and his daughter grace our small screens, just in time for half term. Narrated by Helena Bonham Carter, the Gruffalo’s daughter ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow in search of the legendary Big Bad Mouse. She meets Owl, Fox and Snake on her journey and promises to be as enchanting a film as its predecessor.

So, why not make a Gruffalo day of it? This activity pack is based on the original story – I’m sure there’ll be  updates out soon enough -  and is ‘bursting’ with games, puzzles, drawings, colouring pages and over 40 reusable stickers.

It sounds like a perfect opportunity for a snowball fight, a cuddle on the sofa with the new DVD and then an afternoon’s activities with The Gruffalo’s Child Activity Book this half term!

I love the Gruffalo's child. It has a nice pace, and a lovely setting. You can almost hear the shush of the snow in the woods. And also I like that it is a cautionary tale without being preachy. Always best to stay at home with mum and dad kids! If you're looking for a Christmas gift to give to a young child then this could help. The two books come in a slip-cover style box. They're hard books, so more suited to younger children who are a bit rough with paper pages. Slightly older pre-schoolers may find it babyish though.

I'm not so familiar with the Monkey Puzzle book, also written by Julia Donaldson with the same fabulous illustrations from artist Axel Scheffler. The story follows Monkey as, with the (not so) helpful blue butterfly tries to find his mum.

I think that it also contains the words and the music for the Monkey Puzzle song, although I'm not 100% sure that's in all versions of the book.

I love book collections; I just love books in general, but book collections make for cost-effective presents; they provide endless amounts of joy for very little money - I used to read books from my young childhood days when I was 'too old' for them, they just made me feel warm and cosy!

I can't comment on the other nine books in the Winter Wonderland Book Collection, but I can tell you that The Gruffalo's Child is just as fabulous as The Gruffalo.  I must confess I resisted reading it for a long time, it smacked a bit of  'cashing in' to me but it's nothing of the sort; it's since become as much of a favourite as its predecessor.

I can recite The Gruffalo in my sleep but I'm not at all familiar with the sequel - The Gruffalo's Child.

Apparently, one dark night the Gruffalo's child disobeys her father’s warnings and ventures out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist . . . does he?

It sounds AWESOME and I might just have to buy myself my youngest a copy; he's a little bookworm and really enjoys all the other Julia Donaldson books he has.

The Monkey Puzzle is about a baby monkey who's lost his mother, can Butterfly help him find her?

Yes, but only after a lot of trial and error as Butterfly misunderstands Monkey's descriptions and leads him to all kinds of animals which clearly AREN'T his mother; my son never fails to find this utterly hilarious, "Silly butterfly!" he says.
