Monster High Create A Monster Kit £13.49 @ Smyths Toys

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 27 January, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Monster High Create A Monster Kit £13.49 @ Smyths Toys

The Monster High dolls and sets are as hard to find as hen’s teeth at the moment so not only is the fact that this is a low price really good, but the fact that they have any of these items in stock! This particular kit is ace – you get to create your very own monster for £13.49 instead of £17.99.

Dr. Frankenstein isn’t the only person who can create monsters. Now you can too. The Monster High Create A Monster set provides your offspring with all the body parts (hahahah) and fashions needed to create unique, scary and cool creatures.

Each Monster High Create a Monster kit comes with a torso, two sets of limbs, two heads, one hairpiece, two fashions and a unique add on such as wings. I love the fact that I am writing about a set that includes limbs and a torso, it’s surreal!

The pieces can be assembled in more than 250 ways so kids can make as many weird combinations as they like.

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 10 December, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Free Next Day Delivery On Orders Over £29 @ Smyths ToysI've bought a lot of toys from Smyths over the years. They offer prices that are pretty good, easily on par with Toys R Us. If you're looking to buy a number of items, or a single expensive item, then it is worth checking the Smyths' website until Tuesday, as they're offering free NEXT DAY delivery on orders over £29. Yes that's right, you could order that day, get it the next, and never have to leave your warm, cosy living room. You might be able to tell that I just love free delivery offers.

There are exclusions however. It may not apply to a big item, so best to check if you're looking to get something like a bike. It is also only available on mainland Great Britain, so sadly no use if you're in Northern Ireland.

You also need to place your order before 5pm to get it the next day.

Special offers on the site at the moment include the Little Tykes Cooking Sounds Kitchen, at £29.99. It is normally £59.99.

The Fireman Sam Supreme Playset is down from £59.99 to £39.99. This is a 21 piece playset, with figures and vehicles, a collapsing roof and floor.

And then there's Magic Rattle Pooh, reduced from £29.99 to £19.99. This Winnie the Pooh toy comes with a child size rattle. When baby shakes the rattle at Pooh, Pooh will start to rock around on his bottom and the bee on his hand will dance. When baby stops rattling Pooh stops rocking.

Jumbo Games Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 10 May, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Jumbo Games ReviewAlthough I'm not familiar with the brand name, it turns out that Jumbo Games have been around a long time. The company started in the Netherlands in 1853. They produce good quality, well made games. The emphasis is on game playing, rather than trying to be educational. So they probably manage to achieve both!

I'm rubbish at simply playing with my son. No matter how hard I try, I simply cannot get my mind into the same imaginary space that he does. Games are a good compromise. We can both play together.

PlayPennies received two games to review from Jumbo Games. These were Puzzle Time with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Roo (£6.99, available at Smyths and The Entertainer), and Castle Logix (£17.99 at Amazon)

I gave these to PlayPennies mum Theresa to test out - and play with - her four year old daughter.

Jumbo Games ReviewPuzzle Time with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Roo

This puzzle has been released to tie in with the launch of the new Winnie the Pooh movie. I know that Theresa and her daughter had seen, and enjoyed, the movie, so I was interested to see how well this puzzle went down.

Puzzle Time with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Roo is a 25 piece floor puzzle, recommended for children aged three plus. Theresa tells us you get two puzzles in the box.

Her initial impression was good. "First off I have to tell you that these are very good quality and that the pieces themselves can take quite a hefty beating."  Despite falling in love with the images, having lovely memories of the movies, for some reason she and her daughter felt it was important to test out just how robust the pieces were.

They 'gummed' on a couple, to see how well they would take the soggy treatment. They threw them around, and even sat on them. "Apart from a little peeling on the edges of the two soggy pieces, the puzzle remained scratch and damage free." That's good then! She also points out that "Thick card supports the two lovely and bright images - images that little eyes and hands will enjoy as much as older ones - and the pieces are not too small or too big."

Theresa was pushed out of the way when it came to doing the puzzles. This was something her daughter was determined to do on her own.

Her overall verdict?  "It is a puzzle I would have spent money on if I was out at the shops."

Jumbo Games ReviewCastle Logix

The Castle Logix game is described as a children's brainteaser. I guess it is never too early to introduce the concept of logical thinking. The game is recommended for children aged three years and up. It has 48 challenges, and four levels of difficulty. The concept is to correctly piece together the blocks and pegs to resemble the image in the challenge booklet.

I think it is safe to say that Theresa and her daughter enjoyed this game. Theresa gave it "10 out of 10 for originality, quality and brilliance".

Her first impression was a bit of a disappointment. "You get four wooden blocks of varying sizes along with three wooden poles of varying lengths." Boring. Or so she thought.

Leaving the game in the hands of two four year olds and an eight year old to make snacks, she came back to a completely silent room. "Silence usually means they are concentrating very hard on destroying something. Not this time. In this particular (and very beautiful) moment in time six hands were working together to figure out the first of a series of puzzles."

The aim is to match the picture in the book using the supplied items. Not as easy as it looks, and the puzzles get harder . In fact, this proved a lure for the children. "The fact that they can progress steadily up the difficulty charts has them all so hooked. We love it. My kids love it. It is pure entertainment with an essential educational twist."

And finally ...

Both toys were a hit with Theresa and her daughter. It goes to show that you don't need to try to be 'educational'. A good old fashioned brain teaser or puzzle is still the best sort of fun.

Thomas The Tank Engine Bed £129.99 @ Smyths Toys

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 30 November, 2010 at 11:00 am

Thomas The Tank Engine Bed £129.99 @ Smyths ToysThis amazing Thomas the Tank Engine bed was £199.99 but has been reduced to £129.99 - it would make any Thomas the Tank Engine fan a very HAPPY Thomas the Tank Engine fan indeed.

If you're looking to upgrade your little Thomas fanatics's bed and theme their room, then this bed would definitely take centre stage!

I've often found that Christmas is a good time to do this as you can soften the price blow by asking family members to contribute towards it.

My youngest would have gone crazy for a Thomas the Tank Engine bed like this.

It has two pull-out storage drawers that are printed on the front to look like wheels, it has MDF panels which are printed to look like Thomas' various engine bodywork parts and it has a tubular steel frame.

As with most beds it doesn't come with a mattress - this is so you can choose the sort of mattress you'd like your child to sleep on, rather than be 'dictated' to by the manaufacturer.

It has a spring steel frame detachable fabric canopy that comes with a detachable battery operated night-light which has an easy push on/off button.

If you get this Thomas the Tank Engine bed for your little one, then you'll need to put your DIY hat on on Christmas Day to put it together - but let's face it, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a bit of do it yourself!

There's no delivery to pay on this Thomas the Tank Engine bed; if you live near a Smyths Toys then you can collect it in store.

61cm Large Peppa Pig/George £14.99 @ Smyths Toys

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 30 September, 2010 at 6:00 pm

61cm Large Peppa Pig/George £14.99 @ Smyths Toys

Now THIS is a fabulous Christmas present right here, and for a fabulously low price to boot. This enormigigantic Peppa Pig (or George) plush toy has been marked down from £34.99 to only £14.99 which is a whopping saving.

There really isn’t a lot to say about these two toys other than that they are gigantic and will probably be an amazing place for most tiny tots to snuggle up and go to sleep. Any little Peppa Pig fan with absolutely squeal with delight when she (or he) sees the size of this toy.

You can choose between either George or Peppa and judging by the picture you better have a pretty sturdy tot if you want them to be able to carry them around. I remember desperately wanting a giant sized plush toy when I was a kid and never getting one because, back then, they were hideously expensive.

Now you can nab one for £14.99 and make a kids day. Although wrapping these chaps is probably really tough.

Graco Baby Delight Swing £39.99 @ Smyths Toys

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 5 September, 2010 at 9:00 am

Graco Baby Delight Swing £39.99 @ Smyths ToysGraco is a name you can generally rely on and this Graco Baby Delight Swing is bound to delight your baby, and as it's been reduced by £40 it'll delight your bank balance too!

Baby swings, rocker chairs, bouncy chairs, ANYTHING that has motion is a must, as far as I'm concerned, when you have a baby in the house.

One day, when my youngest was still tiny in a stage 0 car seat, I put him (in it) on top of the tumble dryer which was whirring round and round and he went all quiet and dopey in an instant - it came to the rescue more than once when nothing else would placate him!

Rocker chairs and cradles are great, but sometimes you need to do other things other than sit and be the rocking mechanism. This Graco 'Baby Delight' swing does that for you so you can get on with whatever else you need to do.

It's compact and portable so you can move it around the house as you go and baby can watch you be busy, whilst they recline and swing in padded luxury - it's alright for some hey!

It's suitable from birth and should be £79.99 instead of the £39.99 that Smyths Toys are giving it away for.

If you don't have a Smyths Toys near you then delivery to mainland UK will be £4.25 (sorry Nothern Island and Scottish Islands, it's more for you) but if you do, and they have it in stock, then you could go and collect it!

Happy baby swinging.
