The Tale of Ginger And Pickles Centenary Edition £1 @ Red House Books

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 24 December, 2011 at 4:00 pm

The Tale of Ginger And Pickles Centenary Edition £1 @ Red House BooksRed House describes itself as the home of children's books. It certainly has a wide selection, and excellent prices. Every so often a really good bargain is thrown up and this is one of them. A beautiful edition, The Tale Of Ginger And Pickles Centenary Edition by Beatrix Potter is just £1. The RRP is £6.99.

Click here for your Ginger And Pickles book at the Red House

Beatric Potter's tales are simply timeless, and utterly delightful. This miniature hardback has been specially produced to celebrate the centenary of these classics. It has been printed with a special gold-foil jacket, making this book an absolute delight. It will make a special gift for a newborn baby, a preschooler's birthday or anyone who can't resist their charm.

The book was first published in 1909, so I'm guessing this edition was first published in 2009. If it is the same as the book, which is also sold on Waterstone's and Amazon's websites, then it has a gold foil cover. It certainly looks identical.

The Red House website actually has a typo on it. The title of the book is 'Ginger And Pickles' but Red House has listed it as The Tale of Ginger Pickles. According to Wikipedia "the  book tells of two shopkeepers who extend unlimited credit to their customers and, as a result, are forced to go out of business."

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection £12.99 @ Red House

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 11 February, 2011 at 9:00 am

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection £12.99 @ Red House

I'm thrilled to see this pop up again. I had wanted to buy this before Christmas. Having heard nothing but great things about the set, I'm now putting it aside for my son's birthday. The Encyclopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection has an RRP of £50, but is on sale at Red House for £12.99. The cheapest I've seen it is at £11 on Amazon and that was just for a single book.

You can get free standard delivery too if you enter the code FREEFEB on the Basket page. Now, don't copy and paste the code. I did that and it didn't work. The site told me the code was invalid. Then I typed it in manually, and it worked just fine.

You won't see the code applied though until you get to the delivery page.

The age range for the books is 7 plus. These are well constructed and detailed pop-up books. According to the website "not only will you find stunning paper models of a range of prehistoric beasts, sea monsters and dinosaurs, but you'll also learn a wealth of fascinating facts about these extraordinary creatures. From the T.rex and the sabre-toothed tiger to enormous sharks, these are not animals you'd want to run into, but you'll love reading about them!"

However what really sold me on these books are the descriptions in the customer reviews. One person writes "These books are so intricately put together, they are works of art." And then there's this from another review "The books themselves are larger than I expected and come in a lovely miniature bookcase with a small drawer for pop-up animals."

Chuggington Book Collection £4.99 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 23 January, 2011 at 9:00 am

Chuggington Book Collection £4.99 @ Red HouseRed House are selling this four book Chuggington Book Collection for £4.99 instead of the £15.96 list price.

Books make great gifts; long after toys have been played with and got bored with, books are still being enjoyed at bedtime.

All of my family fell in love with Chuggington when it first hit the TV screens – my youngest gave everyone character names: he was Wilson, my eldest was Brewster and my daughter was KoKo, it really was far too cute actually.

If you’re not familiar with Chuggington, here’s a quick lesson in all things Chuggington.

Wilson, Brewster and KoKo are trainee locomotive engines (Chuggers) who live in the town of Chuggington and they get up to all sorts of mischief and adventures, whilst learning important life lessons along the way (of course!).

Wilson is the youngest and can be a bit over-enthusiastic sometimes, Brewster is the sensible one and KoKo is outgoing and daring.

I really love the idea of including books in party bags; at just over £1 a book a few sets of this Chuggington Book collection would make for inexpensive additions to the traditional piece of birthday cake and balloon.

They'd also be great for standbys in the emergency pressie drawer.

Delivery is free if you find a few more things you like and spend over £15, otherwise you'll pay a single item delivery free of £1.95.

Happy reading!

Winnie The Pooh Book Collection £30 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 1 December, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Winnie The Pooh Book Collection £30 @ Red HouseThis Winne the Pooh Book Collection would make a stunning Christmas gift for any Winnie the Pooh fan, young or old alike.

I adored Winnie the Pooh as a child and I had books very similar to these.

I have no idea where they are now and have since replaced them with this Winnie the Pooh Book Collection; I read them occasionally too and it's lovely to be able to 'step back in time' and, for a few minutes, feel that life is simple again and not have to worry about the grown-up stuff that is now the norm'.

Thirty books make up this Winnie the Pooh Book Collection and they are absolutely stunning.

I like Disney's version of Pooh Bear, but you can't beat the original water colour illustrations and with everything wrapped up in a sturdy presentation case, this really does make for a special present.

The rrp for the Winnie the Pooh Book Collection is £140 but those lovely folks at Red House have reduced it to £30, and delivery is free as you've spent over £15.

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection £12.99 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 10 November, 2010 at 11:00 am

Encyclopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection £12.99 @ Red HouseThese Encyclopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection books aren't just any old books about dinosaurs and other monsters; they're POP-UP BOOKS about dinosaurs and other monsters!

These Encylopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection books aren't just any old pop-up books; they're AMAZING POP-UP BOOKS!

They, whoever 'they' are, say a picture paints a thousand words - well I don't have a thousand words to play with (about 200 actually) so I have a little video link for you instead.

It shows you one of the books, being turned page by page and in it you'll see just how AWESOME these books really are.

I could describe them to you all I like, but that still wouldn't do justice to this stunning Encylopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection.

Click this video link and you'll see exactly what I mean, then come back and I'll tell you the rest...

So? What did you think? FABULOUS hey!

There are three books in the collection:

  • Dinosaurs
  • Sharks and other sea monster
  • Mega Beasts

You've seen the dinosaur one and I think it's pretty safe to assume the others are just as great.

Fabulous to look at; fabulous to learn from, these Encylopedia Prehistorica: The Complete Collection books should be £50 but are being sold by Red House for just £12.99.

I've ordered from Red House before and their service is exemplary; the comments I've read about these books are even more so.

I'm taking advantage of this deal now - my youngest loves monsters and dinosaurs - before it becomes extinct!

Make And Colour Book Collection £7.99 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 30 October, 2010 at 8:00 am

Make And Colour Book Collection £7.99 @ Red HouseI love things like this Make and Colour book collection of eight books which are on offer over at Red House.

I'm a HUGE Christmas fan - forget Halloween, that's nothing more than commercial begging as far as I'm concerned, it's Christmas all the way for me from here until the big day!

I love decorating the tree and hanging long home-made nut garlands around the the fireplace (drilling holes in over 300 nuts was a labour of love let me tell you!) and I still have some paper decorations that the teenagers made when they were little.

This Make and Colour book collection has eight books that are full of things for your kids to...erm, make and colour!

The titles included are:

  • Make and Colour: Christmas Cards
  • Make and Colour: Christmas Decorations
  • Make and Colour: Greetings Cards
  • Make and Colour: Farm Animals
  • Make and Colour: Paper Dolls
  • Make and Colour: Paper Planes
  • Make and Colour: Party Things
  • Make and Colour: Thank You Cards

...which are perfect for the run-up to, and during Christmas.

I've always found that cards and presents for the grandparents, made by the kids, have been more valued than something bought.

Not only that, when the Christmas holidays start to drag, there are lots of activities in these books to keep young minds occupied.

These should retail for £30.45 but are currently up for grabs with Red House for £7.99; use this code too and you'll get free delivery thrown in - FREE5037.

Happy making and colouring!

The Gruffalo 2011 Family Planner (Calendar) £3.99 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 26 October, 2010 at 9:00 am

The Gruffalo 2011 Family Planner (Calendar) £3.99 @ Red HouseI've just ordered this 2011 The Gruffalo Family Planner from Red House and I'm rather excited!

I'm excited for three reasons:

1) it's a GRUFFALO Family Planner

2) it only cost me £3.99 instead of £9.99 (it costs that in Amazon right now)

2) it's not part way through 2011

You see that's usually when I end up getting calendars and wall planners, but I decided THIS year would be different!  THIS year I'd be organised and I'd get something cool, rather than whatever was left in the shops.

You think I'm kidding, earlier this year my only choices were Baywatch Babes or Hollyoaks Hunks - you try having a Hollyoaks Hunks calendar on your wall when you're old enough to be the mother of some of them, it's just not right!

SO that's why I'm excited, in three to five days a 2011 Gruffalo Family Planner is going to drop through my letter box.

There are five colums for each month so you can use a different column for different family members or different things, such as birthdays.

It comes with 150 stickers too, so you can add stickers to various events - I rather wish it was here already, I love adding birthdays and things for the coming year to calendars.

It makes you wonder why I've not always bought calendars and planners in advance...guess I need a planner to be THAT organised!

I used this code for free delivery when I placed my order and it worked perfectly: FREE5037

Happy Gruffalo planning!

Father Christmas Needs A Wee @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 23 October, 2010 at 9:00 am

Father Christmas Needs A Wee @ Red House

Oh ok, so Father Christmas Needs A Wee is a book from Red House that comes with a CD of the story read by Bernard Cribbins (I LOVE Bernard Cribbins!) - the big beardy guy doesn't actually need a wee at Red House...although you never know!

Anything to do with underpants, wee or Father Christmas is going to be a big hit with little kids.

You really can't go wring with toilet humour or the big guy in the red suit who comes armed with presents once a year.

It's gotta be tough being Father Christmas you know - one night to do all your deliveries, making sure everything is left at the right address (you can tell he never worked for Royal Mail hey!), eating all those mince pies and drinking all that sherry!

Before long Father Christmas needs a wee!

Your child is going to find this story hilarious as Father Christmas becomes increasingly desperate and tries to not to wet his pants!

He rushes through his last deliveries and DASHES home only to discover he's lost his house keys!!!!  WHAT is he going to do!?

Father Christmas Needs A Wee is a fabulous, and funny, counting book that usually retails for £6.99, but is up for grabs from Red House for £3.50.

Delivery is £3.95 if you spend under £15; FREE if you spend over £15 and if you spend over £20 then you'll get a free wrap set too.

Halloween Book Deals @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 9 October, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Halloween Book Deals @ Red HouseRed House have some great little Halloween book deals on at the moment, so if your little witch or wizard is into spooky stories then pop along and see if there's anything that might take their fancy.

Whenever I think of witchy Halloween type books, I instantly go back to my infant school days and think of Meg and Mog and watching them on the TV programme 'Words  and Pictures'...do you remember 'Words and Pictures'?

Then I fast forward a few years to junior school days and Jill Murphy's The Worst Witch series; I loved those and adored Mildred and Maud.

Little kids will love Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (the lady who penned the awesomely successful Gruffalo) and there are Doodle On! Scary doodles books, sticker and activity books on offer too.

If you need to cater for older kids who haven't, and I know this is a long shot, read the Twilight series then these are on 'spesh' offer too.

Prices range from £3.50 upwards and discounts are at least £2.50 or more.

Standard delivery charges with Red House are £3.95 to the UK mainland, the same for NI, the Highlands and Islands - it just takes twice as long - but if you spend over £15 then delivery is freeeeee.

Happy Halloween book hunting!

Zog (by Julia Donaldson) £5.99 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 12 September, 2010 at 11:00 am

Zog (by Julia Donaldson) £5.99 @ Red HouseZog is the new book by Julia Donaldson and is on offer at Red House for £5.99 instead of £10.99

Could this be the new Gruffalo? I have a sneaky feeling that Zog is going to be just as popular!

Zog is a dragon and he's very enthusastic at school.  But there's a problem - he's incredibly accident prone! He's always having accidents, flying into trees and setting his wings on fire - poor Zog, I love him already.

Zog has to capture a princess (I thought this was very amusing) and it really does seem that there's little hope of this happening until a little girl arrives and helps to patch up Zog's bumps and brusies.

Maybe she'll be able to help him catch a princess!

The reading age guide is three years and upwards, but I'm sure this is a book that will be loved from a much earlier age than that if it's a book at bedtime.

This is the hardback version and there are 32 pages of literary and illustration delight for you, and your child, to savour.

Best Ever Fabulous And Monstrous Beasts £2.50 @ Red House

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 20 August, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Best Ever Fabulous And Monstrous Beasts £2.50 @ Red House

Nothing gives me as big a frisson of delight as a well-priced book and this one is really well priced. Brilliant for educational fun and back to school brilliance, as well as for going, “oooooh”, the book of Fabulous and Monstrous beasts is a bargain for £2.50 at Red House.

Did you actually roar when you clicked the link? Yeah, me too. Anyway. This book contains fantastic illustrations, photographs, hard facts and more about amazing monster myths and stories. It investigates creatures from classical mythology, legend and folklore as well as monster sightings from modern times.

Am I really the only adult sitting here and going, “I want that”?

It’s a saving of £10.49 for the book and I can’t see if postage and packaging are included in the price or not. When I was a kid I loved reading up on classical mythology – the minotaur was one of my favourites – and I hope that I can inspire the same fascination in my daughter too.

Doctor Who Tardis Model Making Kit £2.50 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 20 August, 2010 at 10:00 am

Doctor Who Tardis Model Making Kit £2.50 @ Red HouseI'm VERY excited about this Doctor Who Tardis model making kit!

I love Doctor Who, but I know a little girl who loves him even more than me so I've just ordered this for her - that's one Christmas pressie sorted and ticked off MY list!

How awesome is this book?! Well it is if you're a Doc Who fan anyway, perhaps not so much if you're not!

Doctor Who Tardis Model Making Kit £2.50 @ Red HouseIt doesn't matter whether your favourite Doctor Who was Patrick Troughton or Peter Davidson - actually, I thought he was a bit wimpy for the Doctor, by far the best of my childhood days was Tom Baker and his super long scarf!

And of the modern day Docs, it has to be David Tennant for me - we talk about a lot of things at PlayPennies HQ but the issue of who is the best Doctor Who is the one most frequently debated, and this Tardis model making kit book just happens to feature the lovely David; result!

Doctor Who Tardis Model Making Kit £2.50 @ Red HouseAnnnnyway, back to the deal!  With this book you can build and create some stunning 3D Tardis models just from the pages it contains, and without the need for glue and scissors.

This HAS to be a bonus - glue, kids, scissors...not always my idea of fun! But making Tardis models without the need for all that faff - brilliant!

The usual price for this book is £9.99, but you can have it from Red House, delivered to your door, for just £2.50.

Best Ever Fabulous & Monstrous Beasts £2.50 @ Red House

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 20 August, 2010 at 8:00 am

Best Ever Fabulous & Monstrous Beasts £2.50 @ Red House

More than a good deal, I love a good book deal and this Best Ever Fabulous & Monstrous Beasts book deal from Red House is just that!

Stories of beasts and monsters have been captivating kids for a very long time, possibly since the first stories were told!

This Best Ever Fabulous and Monstrous Beasts book is an absolute gem - not only is it entertaining and exciting with it's tales of monsters, but it's informative and educational at the same time with a lot of historical references contained within the stories.

I do like it when books manage to combine entertainment with learning, but keeping the learning subtle so your child doesn't feel like they're being taught.

The book, which is hardback, has 64 pages of monsters that inhabit the land, sea and air and it doesn't just tell of monsters from days gone by either, there are photographs and stories of modern monster sightings too.

The normal price for this book is £12.99 but Red House have reduced it down to £2.50, which includes delivery too. Lovely!
