Moon In My Room £16.99 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 25 April, 2011 at 9:00 am

Moon In My Room £16.99 @ Play.com

This unique home décor accessory for children – the Moon in my Room – is £16.99 at Play.com, a 43% saving.

My mother taught my little girl to look up at the moon when she was still very small, and now at 18 months there’s a full on regal announcement every time we see the moon, especially during the day.   I quite like the idea of this moon as a night light though.

The Moon in my Room features twelve illuminated lunar phases that can either display automatically or be controlled with the supplied remote.

The Moon in my Room also includes an audio CD featuring a 15 minute guided tour of the moon.

The reviews, although only two, are five star, with comments such as “you won’t be disappointed” and “worth painting a bedroom midnight blue to accomodate (sic) this on the wall fantastically life like”.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Count Dooku Action Figure £4.99 @ Play

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 24 April, 2011 at 9:00 am

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Count Dooku Action Figure £4.99 @ PlaySpecifically, this is a Star Wars: The Clone Wars: 3.75 Inch Count Dooku Action Figure (Wave 4). I'm sure they could have come up with a longer name for the toy if they'd really thought about it. Play has this on half price sale right now, down from £8.99 to £4.99.

You can also get another baddie figure from Star Wars: The Clone Wars for £4.99. That's the Cad Bane Action Figure.

Star Wars stuff is particularly expensive I've found. Everything seems to be aimed at adults, who perhaps collect these sorts of things. Which seems to forget that there's still a huge audience of little kids out there who love this cartoon series and want to play out stories of their own.

Delivery is free on the website.

Now I'm not an expert on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. My son likes to watch the show on the Cartoon Network, and it is one of the few shows that doesn't drive me completely nuts. If you've ever seen the Cartoon Network you'll know there's some really weird stuff on there!

Being the Easter Holidays, he's been allowed to watch more TV than usual. Although there's not been any need to take up this option with the lovely weather we've had.

The Count Dooku figure comes with accessories, and a 'value added battle card', also described as a trading card.

Kids Backpacks From £2.99 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 17 April, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Kids Backpacks From £2.99 @ Play.com

There are a few fab looking kids backpacks on sale at Play.com right now

I love that my daughter has a little backpack that she can use to carry her own toys, a nappy and some wet wipes for when I don't feel like playing the role of pack-horse. While these bags are for slightly older kids, I think that's even more reason – although I'm sure mum still ends up carrying them half the time. The point remains, however!

There are only four styles still available for £2.99, was £7.99

But there are loads more for £3.99 to £10.99. There are various offers on various styles, so you need to have a good look.

For example, the Disney Pixar Cars bag is £10.99 or 2 for £20 – not a huge saving, but there none the less. The same applies to the Peppa Pig bag.

On the cheaper side of things, again, are Bob The Builder for £4.99 (was £8.99) and Star Wars for £3.99. Even the shaped backpacks like Little Miss Daredevil and Mr. Men's Mr Bump are down 54% to £4.99

As always, delivery is free and there are 87 backpack options to choose from.

Star Wars: Darth Vader Dressing Gown £9.99 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 16 April, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Star Wars: Darth Vader Dressing Gown £9.99 @ Play.com

Play have a Star Wars Darth Vader dressing gown on sale for £9.99 instead of £59.99 – which I initially thought was a mistake, since that's a £50 or 83% discount. This item also has free delivery.

Fathers day is a little way off yet, but with a price like this, can you afford not to be prepared? Especially if your name is Luke. Or not.

But seriously, if your partner or dad (or mum, for that matter) is a Star Wars fan, this is worth buying and keeping in the cupboard.

The reviewers were happy enough with it, with one feeling it was very cheaply made, but the rest not agreeing, although all felt it was thinner than they expected.

The dressing gown is made of 100% cotton velour, is “fabulously warm and cosy”. It has a Darth Vader helmet logo embroidered on the front, a cotton belt and two large pockets.

Thomas Express Shaped Printed Plush Cushion £4.99 @ Play.com

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 8 April, 2011 at 8:00 am

Thomas Express Shaped Printed Plush Cushion £4.99 @ Play.comHere's something fun and cute for any little one's bedroom. Their own Thomas express shaped cushion. Play.com has reduced this in price from £14.99 to £4.9.

That £14.99 is the RRP though, so it is probably sold much cheaper than that usually anyway. But at £4.99 this is the best price I could find.

The Thomas Express shaped printed plush cushion is 100% polyester, and can be sponge cleaned. That's what it says on the website. It doesn't say though whether it is only possible to sponge clean it. I hate that with kids stuff as at some point, you know only a full machine wash will do!

Another question that springs to mind is why the cushion is called Thomas Express, when it looks just like the usual sort of Thomas the Tank Engine to me. Has he had a name change?

In case, by some remote chance, you've not ever heard of Thomas the Tank Engine before, the books and TV show are set on the imaginary island of Sodor, a place where all vehicles have personalities. It is described as an idyllic place with a willingness to embrace good manners and hard work.

Not quite my idea of an idyll, which has a lot more in the way of sun and beaches, and a lot less in the way of work. But I guess it is all good life lessons for children to learn!

Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine DVD Box Set £15.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 6 April, 2011 at 10:00 am

Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine DVD Box Set £15.99 @ Play.com

Ohhhh, this is a totally awesome Scooby-Doo box set on sale at Play.com and I am so going to buy it. The Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine set includes 10 DVDs in a most excellent DVD case for only £15.99. Zoinks!

The Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine DVD box set comes with 10 discs that include Chill Out, Scooby- Doo!,  Scooby-Doo & The Cyber Chase, Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King, Scooby-Doo Meets the Harlem Globetrotters, Scooby-Doo The Movie, and plenty more.

With 10 DVDs there are bound to be a ton of episodes included in the Scooby-Doo kit and they are all from the classic series with the classic car forming the DVD collector’s style box. My daughter absolutely loves Scooby-Doo so this is a definite buy for our house.

I can’t find much more information about the box set unfortunately so I really don’t know if there are only ten episodes (although one episode per disc seems a bit random) or what the layout is. However, the retail price usually sits at around £34.99 and the next cheapest on sale is £19.

Dance Juniors Nintendo Wii £12.99 @ Play.com

Dance Juniors for the Nintendo Wii is a rather brilliant game for kids and youngsters and has been marked down from £19.99 to £12.99 at Play.com. The next cheapest price I can find is £18.99 at Amazon.

Dance Juniors for the Nintendo Wii is a brilliant game for getting kids up and exercising and having fun. It is also a great way of helping them to develop co-ordination and to keep them busy on rainy days in the holidays.

Dance Juniors includes the all time biggest pop hits re-recorded by kids with classic child-friendly tunes for the littlest ones too. There are also hits from kids TV shows and you can pick between four themed playlist categories – Animal, Party, Funny and Vacation.

Toy Story 3: 3 In A Box Puzzle £3.49 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 26 March, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Toy Story 3: 3 In A Box Puzzle £3.49 @ Play.com
Play.com are selling the Toy Story 3: 3 in a box 49 piece jigsaw puzzle for £3.49, with free delivery. The RRP is usually £4.00, so it's a 30% saving – or £1.50 in cold hard cash terms.

The three puzzles, suitable for ages 5 and over feature characters from the movie. Each puzzle is cut into 49 pieces and the reverse of each has different patterns so they can be readily sorted out before assembly.

The first puzzle has Jessie, Woody, Lotso, (who, honestly, was a very surprising character. I still don't get how he could be so mean with a name like that!) Slinky, Bullseye and Mr. Potato Head doing an excited looking little jig.

The second features Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and both Potato Heads, while the third has the boys, or rather, Buzz, Woody, Hamm and Rex and a few army men posing for their viewers.

If puzzles are, as Play claims, an “excellent way to encourage your child's observation, imagination and communication skills”, then this is a brilliantly priced way of doing so!

Countdown Board Game £6.99 @ Play.com

The Countdown board game includes a Countdown timer, a playing board, 100 letter cards, 14 number cards, 30 Conundrum cards, two pencils, a scorepad, instructins and a red filter sheet.

This is the brilliant boardgame version of the hit TV game show but it offers all new conundrums and a new number system, so lovers of the show will get as much satisfaction from playing the board game as they did watching Countdown on TV.

This looks to be an excellent deal for a game that offers hours of addictive gameplay. And it is out in perfect time for the Easter holidays. After all, what else are you going to do outside on the verandah as the summer sun starts to shine and life gets warm and toasty?

Brainbox: Discover Dinosaurs Game £4.99 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 21 March, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Brainbox: Discover Dinosaurs Game £4.99 @ Play.com

The Brainbox Discover Dinosaurs game at Play.com is now just over half price at £4.99 instead of £10, and includes free delivery.

Brainbox Discover Dinosaurs is a game with 54 illustrated cards about, you guessed it: dinosaurs. The cards feature images and information about all the prehistoric dinos, including their diet, size, weight, location and so on.

The object of the game is to win as many cards as possible in ten minutes. Each player has 10 seconds on a sand timer to read as much information on the cards as possible. They then roll an 8 sided die to determine which question they are to answer. If they answer correctly, they keep the card and the player with the most cards after ten minutes is the winner.

Amazon reviewers mostly liked it – they found it easy to play and good for all age groups. The range includes a few others too (such as maths, history, etc. and reviewers would even buy other boxes in the range.)

In the box you'll find the 54 cards, a rules card, timer and and eight sided die.

The game is suitable for children aged 8 and over.

In The Night Garden Dressy Upsy Daisy Doll £8.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 20 March, 2011 at 6:00 pm

In The Night Garden Dressy Upsy Daisy Doll £8.99 @ Play.com

Play is selling the Dressy Upsy Daisy doll for £8.99 instead of the usual £19.99 which is a hefty saving of £11 off the original price. In fact, that is over half price in savings. What a fabulous bargain for a very popular range of toys.

The Dressy Upsy Daisy doll is a soft plush toy that has bendable hair for fun and easy styling by kids over the age of two. Her skirt is inflated, just like it does in In The Night Garden, and she comes with a bunch of accessories to dress her up.

You can use the included necklace, bracelet, hair flowers, removable shoes, shoebox and mirror accessories to make Upsy Daisy presentable for her nightly performances on the show. I have to admit that I think the original price of £19.99 is way too steep for this product.

I would never have paid that much for a doll that comes with so few accessories and bendy hair. However, £8.99 plus free delivery means that this is a very good price for an In The Night Garden accessory.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory DVD £2.39 @ Play.com

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 19 March, 2011 at 2:00 pm

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory DVD £2.39 @ Play.comI have to confess that I've never actually seen this version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Not out of any sense of loyalty to the original, which I never really liked to be honest. That was a disappointment for me as a kid, being not a patch on the book, so I've never had a desire to see any other movies. However, even if I only saw it once I'd be getting my money's worth out of this DVD. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory DVD is available at Play.com for £2.39 including delivery. It was at £3.99.

This is the 2005 Tim Burton version, starring Johnny Depp. There are only two reviews on the site, and neither are that good. However, you can't really judge a lot by two reviews!

The story, if you're not familiar with it, goes like this. At least in this movie version according to the blurb on the website. Charlie is a kid who lives in poverty in a tiny tumbledown cottage with his parents and all four grandparents.

Willy Wonka is the eccentric owner of the Chocolate Factory, located in Charlie's town. He announces a competition to reveal all the secrets and magic of his factory to five lucky children, who find a golden ticket hidden in one of the chocolate bars.

After some good fortune finding some money, Charlie buys a chocolate bar containing the last gold ticket. He and his grandad get to go on this special tour.

Finger Printing Art Kit £5 @ Play.com

Finger Printing Art Kit £5 @ Play.com

Play.com has a Finger Printing Art Kit on offer for £5, a £3 saving - although it's only £5.69 at Amazon, but still cheaper at Play.com

The Finger Printing Art Kit at Play.com turns your fingerprints into unique pieces of art. According to the blurb, you can turn your child's finger art into flowers and characters by adding faces and features by using the rubber stamps.

You can make greeting cards and wrapping paper – check out our Workshop Wednesdays for more craft ideas.

The pack comes with four coloured ink pads, 12 rubber stamps with plastic finger grips and 12 colouring pencils. It doesn't come with any paper, which is a bit silly, but really you can use any paper!

The reviewers have rated it highly and the kids all seem to love it – one mum keeps wet wipes handy to clean it off, which she says is easy. The other problem that is mentioned is that the colours can be mixed and you need to clean the ink pads, which uses up some of the ink.

It looks like a really fun set - I'd never have thought to use fingerprints for art.

Have finger printing fun!

An Idiot Abroad £6.99 @ HMV

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 16 March, 2011 at 4:00 pm

An Idiot Abroad £6.99 @ HMV

An Idiot Abroad is possibly one of the funniest shows to come out of 2010. Whether you are a fan of The Office or not, the dry humour and agonising wit of the Ricky Gervais mind and Stephen Merchant brain are everywhere in this series. And HMV are selling An Idiot Abroad for only £6.99. Bargain.

An Idiot Abroad is, essentially, a mockumentary created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant as they send their long suffering whipping boy, Karl Pilkington, on a quest to discover the Seven Wonders of the World.

Packed with humour, cringe-worthy moments that will make you laugh, and genuinely bizarre occurrences, An Idiot Abroad is fabulous fun for parents. I have not watched the entire series so I am not entirely sure if it is suitable for kids, my gut says NO.

But why can’t parents get something for themselves to enjoy after the kids have gone to bed. A glass of wine, a good meal and An Idiot Abroad, and you have the makings of a fabulous evening at home. Romantic, no. Fun, yes.
