Cozy Plush Cream Sheep £6.49 @ Play.com

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 4 December, 2011 at 11:00 am

Cozy Plush Cream Sheep £6.49 @ Play.comCozy Plush animals are a range of nine microwavable soft toys. Normally £9.99 this Cozy Plush Cream Sheep is available at Play.com for £6.49. On Amazon they're selling for £9.95.

As far as I can tell, these are an alternative to hot water bottles. Sounds like they'd be definitely more snuggable than a hot water bottle. Although they're mainly for children, I reckon I'd love one of these myself! They'd certainly make a great Christmas present.

Lots of great reviews. Many comment that the sheep is bigger than they expected. Here's what one reviewer said "I got this sheep for my sister for Christmas, it's amazing! The beads/beans  are in the stomach, which is big and fat and cuddly. He is extremely cute, extremely cuddly and gets so warm and cozy it's very hard not to steal him and run off."

The sheep is about 30cm high, and probably about 20cm wide. He sits up by himself.

He also smells of lavender, which is really relaxing after a long day.

Top Stocking Filler Bargains For Children

by Lynley Oram in Features on 28 November, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Top Stocking Filler Bargains For ChildrenI did a Santa box last year, instead of a stocking or Santa sack, but the principle is the same. This was a sturdy, silver covered present box that I'd bought at WH Smiths, I think. Inside it was filled with all his stocking filler presents, individually wrapped. The advantage of the box (and why I thought of it) was that all the little bits could be popped back in there to keep from getting lost in the unwrapping frenzy.

Last year on PlayPennies we talked about the amount of money we would spend on the stocking fillers. Most people seemed to have a budget of around £20, and felt they were good at sticking to this. The cannier spenders made the money go as far as possible by snapping up bargains.

So here's the top ten hottest toys for children, and by hottest I mean cheapest, that are still in stock. I trawled through the pages of bargains that are posted on our sister site HUKD to find these for you. Read on for cheap stocking filler ideas.

Annoying Monsters Review

by Tamsin Oxford in Reviews on 24 November, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Annoying Monsters Review

On the lookout for really weird and funny Christmas gifts? I think I may have found them. The Annoying Monsters are a bunch of adorable toys that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and features, cost £20 on average (Play.com have them at a discount) and have a website that offers lots of lovely extras.

The Annoying Monsters have a story, the story is printed on the box and carried through onto the website where kids can paint, enter competitions, read more stories, and watch Annoying Monster videos.

I was impressed with the variety of stuff on offer on the Annoying Monsters website and with the toy itself. A while ago we reviewed a talking meerkat that my kid loves, still loves, and will probably always love. Her Annoying Monster has supplanted her meerkat. Why?

Well, the Annoying Monsters offer you the same feature – press the button, talk, listen to your voice repeated back to you in an annoyingly high voice – as well as plenty of others. Poke their eyes and they scream, press their foot and they giggle and jump around, press their stomach and they burp and fart.

If you leave your Annoying Monster alone it will snore loudly and if you cuddle it, it may fart on you. Hilarious for kids of almost any age. The only issues I had with this toy were basic ones. My daughter, age 5, struggled with the recording function. Unlike the meerkat toy I mentioned earlier, if you press the button mid-record or while it is repeating, the toy will either stop talking or refuse to record, or it will record without warning. It took a couple of tries to help her get her head around the way it worked.

I wouldn’t call this a flaw because the toy is really well made, soft and cuddly, very funny and lots of fun. Definitely a big thumbs up as a daft and entertaining Christmas gift.

Mickey’s Magical Christmas: Snowed In At The House Of Mouse £2.69 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 24 November, 2011 at 3:00 pm

X-Men Quadrilogy £9.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 21 November, 2011 at 4:00 pm

X-Men Quadrilogy £9.99 @ Play.com

We have had this bundle on PlayPennies for much cheaper before but, as we approach Christmas, this is the best deal going. Play has marked this entire bundle of X-men movies down to only £9.99 including free delivery.

The box set includes X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins-Wolverine. It doesn’t have the latest X-Men movie included which is a bit of a bummer as that one is really a vast improvement on the rubbish they made for X-Men: The Last Stand.

Each movie introduces new characters and follows the adventures of the mutants cared for by Professor X and has them see many losses and wins in the face of their battles with both humanity and each other. The movies are excellent escapist fun and would make a fab Christmas gift for an X-Men fan.

My personal favourites are the first X-Men movie, X-Men Origins – Wolverine, and the last movie X-Men First Class. The latter is surprisingly good!

Toy Story 3 Heroes Backpack £2.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 14 November, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Toy Story 3 Heroes Backpack £2.99 @ Play.com

Still looking for sweet and stupendous Christmas presents? Well, Play has marked the Toy Story 3 backpack down from £9.99 to £2.99 including free delivery. Not a bad price for an ace backpack that can do well for school, life and sleepovers.

The Toy Story 3 kid’s backpack is just what it says on the tin – a backpack with the Toy Story 3 characters on it. The main image is of Buzz Lightyear with Woody, Jessie and Rex running along the base. The writing says Heroes in Training.

It’s a very sweet little gift that won’t cost much and will make some kids very happy indeed. I have definitely nabbed two for the birthday party circuit and will be wrapping up another two as Christmas gifts for friends and family kids. I know my daughter will love it!

There isn’t much info on the site about straps or compartments or wotnot but it seems like a stonking good deal to me.

Doctor Who Kid’s Backpack £3.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 10 November, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Doctor Who Kid’s Backpack £3.99 @ Play.com

Oooh, now this is an awesome deal from Play.com. Here you have a very tasty Doctor Who backpack for only £3.99 instead of the original £9.99. Now I have spent ages hunting for a decently priced Doctor Who backpack for my daughter because she is such a fan and this is the best price I have seen.

The Doctor Who backpack is big enough and (hopefully) sturdy enough to tackle the rigours of school without breaking a sweat. And perhaps the image of the Doctor waving his sonic screwdriver will put off any potential thieves.

There is absolutely zero information about the backpack itself. We know it was almost a tenner, that it is now under £4, that delivery is free, and that there are plenty in stock. The image looks ace, as does the blue piping, and I can only assume it has adjustable straps.

This looks like a fab Christmas gift for any kid who loves Doctor Who, and I am definitely going to nab one for mine.

Disney Pixar Cars 2 Backpack £3.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 10 November, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Disney Pixar Cars 2 Backpack £3.99 @ Play.com

This is a pretty good deal from Play.com, especially if you want to nab some ace Cars 2 merchandise as cool Christmas gifts this year. The Cars 2 backpacks, there are two different designs on offer, are down from £9.99 to only £3.99 which is a whopping saving.

The Disney Pixar Cars 2 backpacks are available in the standard backpack design – that whole rectangle type thing with images on the front – or as a tyre shaped backpack with different images on it. We have reviewed similar Cars 2 backpacks to these on PlayPennies so take a look and see if they suit your needs!

The Cars 2 backpacks will be sent to your front door for free and are made from PVC with adjustable shoulder straps and they have different pictures printed onto the backs. They don’t come with any internal pockets I don’t think, though, but as these are quite similar to the other Cars 2 backpacks I doubt it.

Toy Story Feltastic £3.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 7 November, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Toy Story Feltastic £3.99 @ Play.com

Play.com has marked this ace Toy Story Feltastic kit down from £9.99 to only £3.99. This is an ace saving of over half the original price, £6, and it comes with free delivery too. A lovely little Christmas stocking filler right here.

The Feltastic Toy Story kit lets kids create fun scenes in felt with Buzz, Woody and all of their Toy Story pals including Rex, Hamm and the soldiers. They can place them on the brightly coloured felt surface to create all sorts of different, ahem, stories.

The Toy Story Feltastic set comes in a clear carry case for easy storage and is brilliant for encouraging imaginative play, and it is also a fab indoor toy as the nights draw in and the weather crisps up. The set lets kids play alone or together but is not suitable for children under the age of three thanks to small parts. They may eat Buzz or something…

Doctor Who Junk Tardis Console Playset £8.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 3 November, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Doctor Who Junk Tardis Console Playset £8.99 @ Play.com

The Doctor Who Junk Tardis console playset has been marked down from £19.99 to £8.99 at Play.com and it comes with free delivery to boot. While Play’s delivery is long and slow and arduous, you can’t complain about the fact that they do deliver for free.

The Doctor Who Junk Tardis console playset is a highly detailed five inch scale Junk Tardis based on the design from the episode where that nasty moon/planet thing tried to eat the Tardis and the Doctor was forced to create one with spit, whistles and the mad Tardis soul.

The features include flight restraint safety straps, removable console panel and time rotator. You can use the spinner on the base to fly the Tardis and the action figure is not included. You do need to assemble it as well. Seems that the original price was a bit of a rip off without a figure included, but that could just be me…

Play.com Promotional Code: 20% Off Clothing

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 31 October, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Play.com Promotional Code: 20% Off ClothingUse this Play.com promotional code to get 20% off all clothing. The site also has a sale on party dresses - handy with the Christmas season coming up. There's 40% off. However, when I tried to test the code out on this, it wouldn't give me the option to use a voucher code, so I am guessing you can only use this code on items that aren't already reduced (more than is usual on the site).

Click here to use your 20% Play.com promotional code

  • Discount: 20%
  • Applies to: clothes
  • Promotional code: NOVCLOTHING20
  • Expires: 8th November 2011

I actually find using this these codes on the Play.com site a bit trickier than most. It isn't easy to find where you put the code! You have to go through checkout, and when you get to the last page, before you hit Confirm Order, look on the panel on the right hand side. You'll see a button there for promotional codes, coupons, evouchers. Click on that and enter it in the Voucher Code box that appears on the page. It will then be applied to your order.

I tested it on a t-shirt for my son, who is a massive Cars fan. The Cars Lightening MacQueen t-shirt is £5.99 on the site - the RRP was £9.99. Delivery is free. The code reduced this down to £4.79. Obviously you're going to do a lot better out of this code if you buy more than just one t-shirt!

Official Lego 2012 Calendar £3.99 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 31 October, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Official Lego 2012 Calendar £3.99 @ Play.com

Play.com has marked the official 2012 Lego Calendar down from £9.99 to £3.99 for today only. This is a very tasty saving of £6 which is well over half the original price. The calendar is pretty darn cool and Lego kids will love it.

The Lego 2012 calendar is just that, a calendar full of tasty Lego photographs and images. There is absolutely no information on the Play.com website as to what you get with the calendar or whether or not any Lego items are included.

You do get a limited edition Lego poster with the Lego Calendar set and the low price means that if it doesn’t have any cool Lego extras, you won’t feel completely ripped off. I think that £9.99 for a calendar that just has images of Lego is a bit, well, naff.

Either way, this could be a great Christmas gift or stocking filler for little Lego fans out there.

Casdon Breakfast Set £7.98 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 23 October, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Casdon Breakfast Set £7.98 @ Play.com

This is a very cute little breakfast set from Casdon that has been designed to look exactly like a Breville kettle and toaster. The set usually costs £9.99 but has been reduced to £7.98. And, of course, all the lovely stuff at Play.com comes with free delivery.

The Casdon breakfast set offers a realistic toy kettle and toaster that have been designed to look like the Breville range of products. The kettle has an imitation water gauge and lid and the toaster comes with two slices of pretend toast that can be inserted into the toaster.

You can even twist the timer and wait for the toast to pop out, just like the real thing! The Casdon breakfast set is great for preschoolers who learn by acting out and copying what their parents do and the age range for this set is three and up.

I love this little set, it is just too cute. In fact, I am a fan of Breville stuff anyway and would love to have the real life version of this set in my kitchen.

Nerf Vortex Howler £5.49 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 20 October, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Nerf Vortex Howler £5.49 @ Play.com

The Nerf Vortex Howler is down from £12.99 to £5.49 at Play.com, a saving of £7.50 off the original price, over half! This is one funny looking dude and I reckon kids will love finding it in their Christmas stockings come 25 December.

The Nerf Vortex Howler has finger grip zones to help you throw it smoothly and with cool tricks and twists. If you use them correctly you can make the Vortex spin faster for tight spirals and greater accuracy.

The Nerf Vortex Howler also comes with three separate whistles that combine to create an awesome (although probably extremely noisy) effect. I do wonder if these can be turned off because I imagine many parents will find the howling a tad irritating.

This has loads of customer reviews on Play.com too. Most of them rave about the Nerf Vortex Howler, saying it is fun to play with and that it is quite durable and cool. Seems like a fun gadget!

Disney Minnie Mouse Electronic Cash Register £17.99 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 15 October, 2011 at 11:00 am

Disney Minnie Mouse Electronic Cash Register £17.99 @ Play.comPlay.com have a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse branded, Minnie Mouse Electronic Cash Register for sale at £17.99 instead of £29.99. If it makes any difference to you where you buy it, you can also get it from Amazon at the moment for the same price, and delivery is free from both. The only difference is that from Amazon you could have it by Tuesday, but from Play.com it 'usually dispatches within 1 – 2 weeks.

The Minnie Mouse Electronic Cash Register is designed in bright colours and in keeping with Minnie Mouse's style.

It is full of fun features that will have shopkeepers of the future thrilled to the core. There's a working keyboard 'till' which totals up the spend on the digital screen – so it's basically a calculator. The cash register also features sound effects, and a built in microphone for talking to your customers.

Attached to the side is a mini conveyer belt for mini shopping (not included) and inside the till are coins, bank notes and even a credit card – so plenty of accessories to keep the little ones busy.

Additionally, there's a scanner, and drawing board for writing notes or IOU's.

The Mini Mouse Cash Register requires 3 x AA batteries, which are not included.

Chocolate Lolly Maker £14.39 @ Play.com

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 11 October, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Chocolate Lolly Maker £14.39 @ Play.com

Play.com have reduced the price of the John Adams Chocolate Lolly Maker from £17.99 to £14.39, with free delivery. The same thing at Amazon will cost you £17.56 as it's reduced from £19.99.

I must admit both a fondness and a scepticism over this deal. I remember melting chocolate and pouring it into see-through plastic chocolate moulds with my mum hovering around to make sure we have help when we need it and don't burn ourselves. We had a cupboard full of those plastic sheets and I reminisced keenly on it recently when I saw them in a baking shop.

The Chocolate Lolly Maker seems like it can give today's little girls (the pink leads me to believe that's its target market) the same fond memories – with the difference being that you have four different shapes to choose from, and not a drawer full of sheets for every season or celebration.

The set comes with simple instructions – melt the chocolate (not included), place a stick in each mould, pour the chocolate, add one of 8 messages to the back and leave to set.

It sounds simple enough, and I'd love to hear how it works, if anyone tries it!

Back To The Future Trilogy £14.39 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 6 October, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Back To The Future Trilogy £14.39 @ Play.com

Here is another deal to add to your basket using the code 48MEDIA that I mentioned in my 4pm deal post. Snap up the entire Back to the Future Trilogy in one lovely box set for only £14.39 alongside your copy of Fantastic Mr Fox and you’ve got two ace Christmas gifts ready to go.

I am sure I don’t need to go into detail about this famous trio of films? From the very first which has us hating Buzz, disliking Marty’s dad and loving the mad professor to the weirdness of the Wild Wild West and the flying future – these movies are funny, touching and brilliant.

The box set includes a ton of special features too. You get a new six-part retrospective documentary with interviews with Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd – among other famous faces – as well as the physics, deleted scenes, new endings and more.

Don’t forget to use the special voucher code to get this price and that it expires at midnight on 07 October.

Fantastic Mr Fox £2.39 @ Play.com

Fantastic Mr Fox £2.39 @ Play.com

The Fantastic Mr Fox DVD is down to £2.39 if you use the voucher code outlined below and buy it before midnight tomorrow. This classic text has been brought to life with the voices of a plethora of famous faces including George Clooney and Meryl Streep and usually sells for far more.

The voucher code you need to get the extra pennies off your order (which is delivered for free btw) is 48MEDIA. This is probably not a great use of this discount, I’d throw in some extras, but it does make a difference to the price.

The Fantastic Mr Fox is the story of three horrible famers – Boggis, Bunce and Bean – who are dedicated to destroying the wily and wonderful Mr Fox. He eats their chickens, they pull out all the stops and surround his den, doing their best to capture him.

What follows is a gripping, brilliant, funny and delightful story that will keep kids on tenterhooks and entertain the whole family. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the movie so if you’ve seen it, do let me know if it is worth getting!

Doctor Who Character Building Micro-Figures £1.49 @ Play.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 30 September, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Doctor Who Character Building Micro-Figures £1.49 @ Play.com

This is the series 2 Doctor Who micro-figure collection that comes with all new figures and characters from the hit TV show. You get them for £1.49 including free delivery which is a saving of a whole 50p off the original price.

Each highly detailed and fully articulated micro-figure is sealed within a secret bag so you never know which Doctor Who micro-figure you are going to get. I hate this, if I am honest, as it really is a blatant money taking scam when they can’t be bothered to let you just collect the ones you need.

Every character has its own Doctor Who display base and collector’s leaflet that highlights all the characters available in series 2. There is a total of 10 micro-figures to collect (if you are lucky it will cost you around £15 for the lot, then) and the Dalek micro-figures do not come with a display base.

These are not suitable for young kids as the small parts constitute a choking hazard.
