Parents Freebie: Free Blind Cord Safety Pack @ RoSPA

by Tamsin Oxford in Freebies on 4 November, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Parents Freebie: Free Blind Cord Safety Pack @ RoSPA

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is currently running a Blind Cord Safety Campaign and giving away free packs to parents who want to keep their homes safe for their children. Since 2004, RoSPA has called upon the blind industry to take action to reduce the risk of looped cords and this pack is going to help any parent help prevent accidents in their home.

At the moment RoSPA is hoping that there will be a voluntary agreement among manufacturers and retailers to end looped blind cords forever. If you happen to have a blind with a looped cord then it is essential that it is fitted with a safety device to protect your children.

Research has shown that the most accidental deaths involving blind cords happen in the bedroom and occur in children between 16-36 months. Toddlers can be strangled quickly and quietly by looped cords so let’s prevent this now!

RoSPA are giving away a free Make it Safe pack which includes an advice leaflet, a blind cord cleat with fixing instructions, and a warning triangle so you know what to look for when buying new blinds. Just click on the Apply for Free Pack button on the site.

The Free Children's Books Guide

The Free Children's Books Guide

Reading. One of the best gifts you can give to a child. The wondrous worlds, the magic and imagination, the hours of visiting other places and people. Reading is one thing I will always love, and I will always thank my parents for introducing me to the wonder of reading. However, books can be quite expensive and, as a parent, you can get quite tired of reading the same stories over and over again.

Instead of wearily dragging out the same stories, or taking books out from the library and forgetting to return them (like I do), why not boost your entire children's book collection for free? Fantastic stories for all ages available for nothing at all. They come in all shapes and sizes, and they all have two things - they are free and they are doorways to the imagination. The Free Children's Books Guide

The first site you simply have to visit is All Books Free. They have a huge range of free books for you to download directly from publishers and author websites. The books are for all ages - toddler to teen - and even include old classics like the Elves and the Shoemaker (one of my personal childhood favourites). All you need to do is click on the link for the book and you'll be taken to the site where you can download and print a PDF copy.

If you don't like the idea of reading from tatty pieces of paper, you can invest in some folders to put the pages in and print off old illustrations to decorate the covers. You can even get your kids to join in with the decorating to really personalist the books to their tastes.

Another idea is to purchase some ribbon and a punch and to then punch the sheets, weave the ribbon through, and voila, you have a stunning little book that cost nothing more than a few accessories. The Free Children's Books Guide

Best Children's Books have got the Beatrix Potter stories on their site for absolutely free. This is a gem of a site with stories like The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Tale of Benjamin Bunny and the Tale of Jemima Puddleduck, there for the taking. They also have a Peter Rabbit Colouring Book that you can buy for $2 if you want some extra fun.

The stories are exactly replicated from the originals but you will have to endure adverts running down the sides of the text. I wasn't able to print the pages so I can't tell you if they print without the ads, but you can always copy and paste the text into a Word document to avoid having adverts on your pages. The site says it is entirely legal as the copyright has expired. You can also get free copies of the Mother Goose nursery rhymes and free fairy tales on the same site.

Another utterly fantastic resource is Children's Storybooks Online. They have an enormous database of free books for children that covers ages from tot to teen. You can enjoy any number of different titles, and they add new The Free Children's Books Guidebooks to the site all the time.

The books from Children's Storybooks Online have to be read online though, so while not as convenient as some of the other sites, there is a lot more variety. The layout is really simple, you just have to sit back and use the mouse to navigate the pages. The site is also broken down into the different groups for easy navigation. An utter gem for long journeys and on-demand reading entertainment.

Mighty Book has over 800 free books for kids of all ages. They also have activities and games, all of them geared towards entertaining and educating your child. The books are plain or animated and you can have a select few for free. If you want access to the entire database you'll have to subscribe, but there are enough sample free books to enjoy without having to spend any money at all.

The Free Children's Books GuideClassic Literature boasts an impressive collection of classic texts that have been released into the public domain. Among these you'll find children's classics like Alice in Wonderland and Journey to the Centre of the Earth, among others.

You can even get the entire Oz series - from the Wizard of Oz all the way through to the final episode. If you never read through the entire Oz series, then grab these and get reading with your kids - they are as strange and fabulous for adults as they are for kids.

Hopefully this pile of free children's books, and websites packed with free children's literature, will keep you and your kids entertained for many happy hours. They will certainly come in handy as the Christmas holidays approach, the nights draw in, and we all look for ways to keep little hands and minds busy. Happy free reading!

FREEBIE: 'Lippy Cow' Lip Balm @ HalfPricePerfumes

by Sarah Macdonald in Freebies on 5 June, 2010 at 4:00 pm

FREEBIE: 'Lippy Cow' Lip Balm @ HalfPricePerfumesI've got THE best pun for this deal - get ready to groan...

Well at least I warned you it was bad *grin*

I love this lip balm from Cowshed for its name alone! But there's a lot more to love about 'Lippy Cow' lip balm than its monicker, oh yes!

It doesn't contain any parabens, it doesn't have any petrochemicals in it either.  No sulphates, no artificial colours and it's suitable for vegetarians (I know why, but I did just get this mental image of veggies squirting great squirts of lip balm into their mouths - it amused me).

The blurb about it says this - see if this tempts you...

"Lippy Cow Natural Lip Balm soothes the lips leaving them soft and supple with essential oils of linden blossom, rose geranium and ylang ylang. Linden blossom protects and soothes, rose geranium calms whilst ylang ylang moisturises."

As with most freebies you need to pay the P&P, which is £3.95, and this particular Cowshed product usually retails for £8.00 and I LOVE IT.

If you want to nab one of them for yourself then just enter FreeTheCow into the promotion code box at the checkout and HalfPricePerfumes will zoom one right along to you.

Happy getting Lippy!

FREE Calvin Klein 'Obsession Night' Perfume @ HalfPricePerfumes

by Sarah Macdonald in Freebies on 3 June, 2010 at 4:00 pm

FREE Calvin Klein 'Obsession Night' Perfume @ HalfPricePerfumes"We're not selling it to you at full price! NO! We're not even selling it for half price...we're giving it away FREEEEEEE" (although you will need to pay the P&P!)

I don't get very excited about handbags, shoes or designer clothes but perfumes....?  Well NOW we're talking!

HalfPricePerfumes are giving away a 7ml handbag size bottle of Calvin Klein's 'Obsession Night', which normally retails at £5.99, for FREE although you do need to pay the delivery for it (which is £3.95).

I love this perfume and I'm becoming a BIG fan of handbag-sized versions of my favourites because it means I don't have to lug around the big bottles, can have a quick spritz when I'm out and about and also I can pack them in my hand luggage when I fly as they are well under the 100mls maximum liquid limit.

The blurb for Obsession Night says it's...

"A fragrance taylored for the young, sophisticated and vivacious woman. This delicious fruity blend of citrus, fresh flowers, sexy vanilla and elegant amber captures the warmth and intensity of the night and the woman who shines."

If that's you, then scoot on over to Half Price Perfumes pronto!  Just enter this code at the checkout: FREECKNIGHT (and dont' worry that it looks like they've upped the price from £0.00 to £5.99 - I've run this through the checkout process and it all works fine).

Parent Freebie: Tape Measure from uniformschoolwear.com

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 1 June, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Parent Freebie: Tape Measure from uniformschoolwear.comNow I dont' know about you but I've got a few tape measures, the thing is....I dont' know where any of them are!

Click HERE to claim your FREEBIE tape measure

Tape measures, to me, are akin to the one sock that goes missing in the wash; like all the hairbands and hairclips, grips and snappy things that you've ever bought for yourself or your daughter which gradually dwindle in number until you have to buy more.

So this little freebie is brill - I can have another tape measure (that I'll probably misplace...I wonder if they're all together somewhere comparing units of measurement) and will be able to satisfy the cries of, "How tall am I?" "How long is this?" and , "How wide is that?"

And when it comes to that time of year when I have to start thinking about new school uniform for a new school term (and that isn't too far away you know!) I'll be able to whip out my freebie tape measure and have the measurements down for all three of them in no time!

Just fill in your name and address,  sit back and wait for your tape measure to arrive in the post; lovely.

Parents Freebie: Read A Book And Give To Charity

Parents Freebie: Read A Book And Give To Charity

The written word is, for me, the ultimate playground. I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child and continue to adore the smell, texture and experience that books offer. I’ve even been known to get all faint in big libraries. But enough about my weirdness...This freebie is a fantastic way to enjoy the written word and donate something special to charity.

The premise is simple. You read a book online and they donate a book to charity. So far, they’ve donated 7, 549 books. This may seem like a small amount but it’s more than nothing at all. All you need to do is choose and support a literacy partner that focuses on putting books in the hands of children in need.

Then you can select any one of a number of award winning stories and spend time reading them with your kids. Through your actions, books are donated to charity. While this campaign is primarily based in America, the goal is the same – take books to people in all walks of life. I’ve joined and it’s a fantastic idea.

Parents Freebie: Free Photobook from Hotprints

Parents Freebie: Free Photobook from Hotprints

You can order yourself one free photobook every single month courtesy of Hotprints and some of their selected partners. Registration takes seconds and they will create your photobook for free. Postage to the UK will set you back around $3.

You can only get one free photobook per person and they do include free advertising inserts that (and I quote) “do not interfere with any photo pages”. The ad-free photobooks are very reasonably priced at around £3 so if you don’t want a packet full of inserts then you can just pay for your book.

Personally I recommend getting the free book first – it’s a good way of assessing the quality of the photobooks and seeing if they are worth spending money on at a later date. Uploading images is quick and simple, they load really quickly and I lost ages to choosing the ones I wanted.

I haven’t yet received mine so I can’t tell you whether it’s brilliant quality or not, but it’s free and it’s fun so get out there and get creating.
