Pizza Hut Coupon : £10 Off £25 OrderUse this Pizza Hut coupon to get £10 off your order when you spend £25 or more. A handy little discount if you want to take a break from cooking over the weekend. I am not saying it is the ideal treat for Mother's Day but if you've young kids and/or a baby it can be about the best you can manage! It can’t be used in conjunction with any other offer, including meal deals unfortunately.

Click here to use your £10 Pizza Hut coupon

  • Discount: £10
  • Minimum spend: £25
  • Promotional code: EMATHERYY
  • Expiry: 10th April 2011

To use this code, enter it in the promotion code box as you go through checkout. I tried it out initially on a meal deal, but it didn’t work. .

Next I tested it on two pizzas. One large pizza stuffed crust meat supreme (£17.24), and a large garlic butter stuffed crust magherita (£13.24). The total after the discount came to £20.48. The 20% is deducted from your order’s total, not from each pizza.

When you've got kids, especially young ones, sometimes the best Mother's day present you can give is a nice relaxing day in bed while you take the kids out. Then an evening meal with no washing up or mess involved. A pizza kinda fits the bill nicely!

Fried Green Tomatoes £3.94 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 29 March, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Fried Green Tomatoes £3.94 @ Amazon

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café (the full title of the movie) is one of the all-time movie greats for women. This movie would make a stunning Mother’s Day present for any mum as it is packed with love, laughter, tears and joy. And it is at an equally stunning price of £3.94 on Amazon.

Fried Green Tomatoes is a movie that will stay lovely forever. The story is sweet and poignant. Evelyn’s small town Alabama existence has become meaningless but her life takes on new meaning listening to the stories told by NinnieThredgoode about the Whistle Stop Café.

That café was run by young Idgie Thredgoode who was given to drinking, gambling and loyalty to her abused friend Ruth. Fried Green Tomatoes follows the tales of two friendships – one in the past and one in the present.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café is a beautiful movie about the wonders of friendship and will warm the heart of any mum come this Mother’s Day/

Find Me A Gift Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 29 March, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Find Me A Gift ReviewThe good news is, if you're looking for a present for Mother's Day (this Sunday!) it isn't too late to order online. Find Me A Gift is one of the websites I use a lot to find presents, particularly when looking for something inexpensive and nice. It is hard to tell from a website page what an item is really like. You could just end up with something cheap and nasty instead.

So I have grabbed three likely contenders from the Find Me A Gift pages, and gave them to one of our PlayPennies mum's to review. Something for the bath and me-time, something for fun and something that's practical (but soothing).

Even if you're sorted for Mother's day there will be other occasions, so bookmark this page in case you find yourself stuck in a present dilemma.

Bath Lights Show

Mum of a five year old, Tracy, was very excited about the Bath Lights Show4.99). "I rather liked the idea of being able to lie back in a sparkly bath and read a good book in my very own private bubbly disco." The Bath Lighs Show is a device that floats on the top of the bath water emmitting a mixture of flashing and still lights. It has five different display combinations, made up of red, green and blue lights.  It's dome shaped so that, according to the website, "the light can reach out expansively to illuminate your pool or bath." According to Tracy, the light shows "vary from intense flashes that would not be good for epileptics to soft lighting that shifts between different colour grades as you lie there".

Unfortunately, Tracey was disappointed with this gift. It takes three AAA batteries, and these are not included. Which means you have to insert them yourself. Tracey found that this required a lot of unscrewing and rescewing. Which is understandable given that it is waterproof, but still it "was a bit tedious".

Tracy tried it out in a variety of settings. "The device works beautifully in a dimly lit room with both bubbles and plain water. If the room is brighter, then it still looks fantastic in a bath without bubbles, but doesn't do much if you've used bubble bath." .

She also had a problem with the weight that slips into a crevice at the Bath Light's base. The weight ensures that the lights stay facing the right way up. After only three baths the weight no longer clicked into position on the base of the device and Tracy found it just fell out. "You still get a light show but if you move then it just falls over and the lights flash at the ceiling instead of into the water. Repeated tries to get the weight to slot back into the device have failed and the instructions clearly say that you must not glue it in."

Swarovski Crystal Rainbow Maker

The Swarovski Crystal Rainbow Maker23.99) didn't exactly bowl Tracy over with delight when she opened the box. "My first impression was, what an unprepossessing little sight - this tiny little thing with cogs and wheels and all sorts."

Accprdomg the blurb on the website, "when sunlight hits the rotating Swarovski Crystal, colourful rainbows are projected across your walls". The problem here, as Tracy found, is that this is Britain. There's not necessarily a lot of sunlight around, and the device appears to only work with direct sunlight. "At first I stuck it on the lounge window but it did nothing for about three days. It is not sensitive enough to work on transferred or muted light which is what was happening outside - the sensors are only responsive to direct bright sunlight. However, the sticker cup with which you attach it is excellent. It sticks really well and removes easily."

She tried it around the house until it finally worked its magic in her daughter's bedroom. "It is truly lovely, really it is. I liked the fact that the cogs and wheels were shelved in see-through plastic as then I could see them spinning. I love the rainbows dancing about the room, as does my little one."

However, overall Tracy felt the price was high. "I would recommend this at about £15 as a lovely present." The site has had them on sale for £18 before, so it might be worth keeping an eye out for a lower price.

Find Me A Gift Review

Hot Rocks Gift Set With Candle And Incense

The final item, the Hot Rocks Gift Set with candle and incense14.99) recieved the seal of approval from Tracy. She thought it was excellent value, and the product lived up to expectations.

"I put them on my husband who has a bad shoulder and he really enjoyed them. They take quite a bit of preparation but they are just lovely. And you get an incense holder, incense, candles and an instruction manual included. To be fair, the manual isn't very instructive so you do have to do a bit of guess work as to where to place the stones precisely." Tracy found it easier to Google the stone placements, for better accuracy. Both she and her husband enjoyed the experience.

And Finally ...

There's no set delivery charge. Prices for standard delivery of 2 to 4 days start from 95p. The estimated delivery charge for the Bath Lights Show, for example, was £2.95.

I tested it out on one of their suggested Mother's Day gifts. A Lavender Little Luxuries set, for £12. This contains travel-sized bottles of body lotion, bath and shower gel, and body cream. Lovely. The discount code knocked the delivery charge off - this is £2.50. And another £2.40 was deducted. So all in the set cost £9.60 including delivery.

Mother’s Day In A Panic

by Tamsin Oxford in Features on 24 March, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Mother’s Day In A Panic

In spite of the advertising, the bunting, the adverts and the deals, you’ve woken up on Sunday 03 April with that sinking feeling. You forgot to get her anything special, you didn’t plan anything, the day looms ahead and you realise you have let her down.

Never fear! For here are some quick and brilliant tips for you to employ at short notice that will make you look like you’ve spent ages getting everything ready for her big day.

1. Breakfast is served

Mother’s Day In A PanicEven if all you can scrape out of your kitchen is a few pieces of toast and a cup of instant coffee, the breakfast in bed ploy is a winner.  If mum has already set foot out of bed, imperiously order her to return to the comfort of the covers and tell her not to ruin the surprise you’ve been planning.

Allocate tasks to the kids. Send one into the garden to nab some spring flowers (even twigs with leaves will do) and the other to choose a suitable receptacle for them. A plastic mug packed with hand-picked shrubbery will melt any mother’s heart. Then put them all together, along with her latest book, and place them delicately on her lap and tell her to take her time.

2. Decorate in an emergency

Mother’s Day In A PanicChildren love to draw. Get these skills into action by placing paper on the floor and getting them to colour it in feverishly. As each page is finished, cut it into large triangles and place them in a pile. Even pages from old newspapers and magazines will do. Just make sure you are not cutting up her latest issue!

Once you have a sizeable pile of triangles poke holes into opposite corners of one side, grab some string or some cord and weave it through the triangles. Voila! You have some bunting. Make several different lengths and hang them around the house. The kids will have fun and mum will love the surprise.

3. Cards in a flash

For this you will need card or paper. Mums usually have stashes of card or coloured paper, as do kids, so grab pages of these and set the kids to drawing once more. It’s simply a case of folding the card in half and asking the older children to help the younger write personal messages.

While they are busy doing that, you can write your other half a lovely letter of appreciation. It doesn’t have to be long or fancy, just honest and sweet. Tell her why you think she is a fabulous mother, what qualities you love about her, and thank her for all her hard work. A squirt of your aftershave, while terribly teen, is also a sweet way to round it off.

4. Go out

Mother’s Day In A Panic

While mum reads her cards and your thoughtful letter, it is time for you to gallop out the door with the kids and get ingredients for lunch. Before you go, though, take a quick look at this homemade fudge recipe or this enormous range of Mother’s Day recipes from AllRecipes.co.uk. Make sure you get the right ingredients to whip these up and spoil her with a long and luxurious lunch for one.

5. Weather permitting

If the weather is sunny and bright, why not take her on a long and romantic walk? Those of you who have helpful grandparents can ask them if they don’t mind taking the kids for an hour or two so you can walk, hand-in-hand, across fields and beaches.

6. Or not…

Mother’s Day In A PanicThe rain is pouring, the wind is howling, and there is no chance of grandparents swooping in to the rescue. So what is one thing that most mums love to do but never get the time for? A long, hot, bath. Put the kids in front of a movie and draw your special mother a bath.

Make sure she has something to drink (perhaps a glass of wine) and something to either read or listen to, shut the door, and leave her alone. When she’s ready to emerge, she will.

7. The close of the day

Finally, let mum realise that she is not going to lift a finger to do housework or cooking all day. All child-related emergencies (logic permitting, of course) will be handled by you, as will dinner, dessert and an evening movie. Let her have free run of the home to do as she pleases and she will be far more grateful for this chance to relax than you could possibly imagine.

There you go, you’re saved. She thinks you’re a genius, the day is a success, and she feels fantastic. Happy Mother’s Day!

Workshop Wednesday: Make A Mother's Day Daffodil

by Lynley Oram in Features on 23 March, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Workshop Wednesday: Make A Mother's Day DaffodilDaffodil's are the traditional flower for Mother's Day. There's a good reason for this. They are in flower, and they grow like, well, wild flowers. It seems like every patch of spare ground and park land has a little crop of yellow flowers growing there.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean you can or should pick them. Flowers left to grow will be there for the enjoyment of all, for starters. But also, if they're growing in the park, then you're not actually allowed to pick them. I know that the park rangers will probably turn a blind eye to a kiddie picking one or two on Mother's day morning. Just not armfuls of them.

How about getting the kids to make a daffodil instead? There's lots of ideas online for doing this. I found a template on one site - if you want to use this click HERE.

However, I don't have a printer so I had to find other ways of doing it.

Workshop Wednesday: Make A Mother's Day DaffodilHere's what you'll need for this project to make one flower:

  • Half an A4 yellow card
  • 1 A4 sheet of green paper, or white paper and a green crayon
  • a cardboard egg box
  • yellow acrylic paint
  • sticky tape
  • scissors

Workshop Wednesday: Make A Mother's Day Daffodil

First, cut out one of the egg cups from the egg carton. My son, and a friend who was over for a sleepover, were the guinea pigs for this craft.  Paint the egg cup in the yellow acrylic paint, both inside and outside the cup. Put it to one side to dry.

I tried to use green card for the stem, but this was too stiff to roll properly.

Roll the green paper it up into a long tube for the stem. I needed to help the boys out with this. Both of them had a good go, but it does take a bit of practice to roll up a tube of paper fairly small.

Workshop Wednesday: Make A Mother's Day Daffodil

Tape them up and then flatten down one end. This is where the flower will go. You can add leaves to the stem. I didn't do that here, but if you've some green card it is easy enough to do.

For the petals, I cut an A4 sheet of yellow card in half. That was one half for each flower. I cut the half into quarters, so I had four equally shaped squares. I then trimmed this into a petal shape.

Arrange the four petals, and tape the back into position. Put the flat end of the stem on the back of the flower shape, and tape that down. Now, turn it over, get the egg cup you painted yellow before and glue it into the centre of the petals.

Workshop Wednesday: Make A Mother's Day Daffodil

My son's friend was particularly excited to be able to give his mum a flower, it really was very sweet. This would make a lovely present from the kids to mum, or to grandma, on the 3rd of April. That's the date of Mothering Sunday this year, in case you've missed it!

Soap Star Gifts Review

by Sarah Macdonald in Reviews on 23 March, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Soap Star Gifts ReviewIn case you haven't been paying attention, Mother's Day is looming. It's on Sunday 3 April this year so you only have one and a half weeks to sort out suitable presents and cards and stuff.

I said SUITABLE presents, not a last minute dash to the One Stop or 8 til Late first thing on Sunday morning!

I know that chocolates and flowers are the most obvious things to choose, but what if the mum(s) you're buying for aren't chocolate fans or are currently on a no-chocolate diet?

Soap Star Gifts got in touch with us recently and we think they have the PERFECT solution to this no-cake-no-chocolate pressie dilemma.

I found myself utterly mesmerised by the things we sent to our mum tester, Becky; I've never seen anything for the bath that looks as fabulous and good enough to eat - although you can't, so please don't try!

The response in Becky's household was just the same...

Soap Star Gifts Review"OOH! How gorgeous! A lovely box of chocolates!" was Becky's reaction to the Luxury Chocolate Lovers Bath Melt gift set (£10).

"They look so edible.  In fact, I had to keep the cupcake one hidden away so that my toddler couldn't eat it; it looked far too scrummy."

And she's not wrong, just look at them!   The presentation is beautiful and the six 'chocolates' all contain natural Cocoa Butter and essential oils; cocoa and chocolates without a single calorie.

Now that's what I call the perfect chocolate gift for those in a no-chocolate-fly-zone and Becky told us that they smell 'absolutely gorgeous' too.

"My children were incredibly jealous, especially my 7-year-old daughter who could not believe her eyes," me neither - this review could take me some time to write as I can't stop staring at all the Soap Star Gifts images.

This wasn't the only Soap Star Gift we sent to Becky and whilst she confessed she's not the biggest 'bath person' in the world, she felt this put her in an ideal position and could test them from a position of bath impartiality.

Soap Star Gifts Review

A firm, but double-edged sword, favourite were the three cupcake bath bombs (£7.49).

"I love the drama of the bath bomb.  The smell is lovely, the oiliness feels very moisturising, but I really don't like the job of having to clean out the bath afterwards," Becky told us.

I have to agree, there are few things as 'soul destroying' as enjoying a lovely bath and then having to spend ages cleaning the tub when you get out.

"The glamour of petal like bits floating in the bath is replaced by the hassle of trying to get them off your skin and bath afterwards.  Although the 'bitty' ones have the most dramatic effect, they are quite tiresome to deal with."

Becky decided she preferred the ones that had just one or two flower embellishments on the top as they didn't come with all the cleaning after effects.

If you're going to give such a Soap Star Gift to the mum in your household this Mother's Day, then I think it should also come with a firm promise that YOU will clean up the bath bomb aftermath for her!

Becky's children totally fell in love with everything from Soap Star Gifts, but due to their lovely oiliness (the bath bombs, not the kids) it did leave them with greasy hair afterwards which required washing again in different water from the bath water.

Becky felt this was a small price to pay for the sheer enjoyment her children got from having cupcakes and chocolates in the bath.

There are bigger and more 'grown up' cupcake bath bombs available from Soap Star Gifts that really are a bit special.

Soap Star Gifts Review

I'm completely in love with these two: La Vie en Rose Bath Bomb (£8.95) which comes gift boxed and is big enough to last for more than a few baths apparently, and this Wedding Ring bath bomb (£8.95).

They are just TOO stunning for words; perfect should there be a Mother's Day proposal in the air or a just to say I LOVE YOU!

And finally...

Everyone is in agreement that all the goodies from Soap Star Gifts are amazing works of art that come beautifully packaged; it almost seems a shame to 'ruin' them by putting them in the bath!

The prices are not extortionate either, and nicely pitched, for a special gift that really will be lovely to give and even more lovely to receive.

If you want to push the boat out and give something ultra special, Soap Star Gifts also offer a bespoke service with prices starting from £25...

"At Soap Star Gifts we specialise in creating luxury gifts to your exact requirements. Whatever the occasions or price we can provide you with a stunning and individual Bath & Body Gift Set made up of the finest products available."

The cost of delivery will depend on how much you spend but once you're over the £50 mark delivery is free.

You also need to allow up to seven working days for your order to be dispatched, so if you're thinking about a Soap Star Gift for Mother's Day then start getting organised now.

That said, Soap Star Gifts do say that they'll try their best to get things to you if you need them sooner, you just have to let them know.

My 1st Years Mother’s Day Bear Review

by Tamsin Oxford in Reviews on 21 March, 2011 at 5:00 pm

My 1st Years Mother’s Day Bear Review

I have to confess that I have an enormous weak spot for teddy bears. They are so utterly soft and cute and cuddly. My 1st Years have a Mother’s Day bear that can be customised to say that your child loves mummy.

Let me explain. Based on all the rave reviews of My 1st Years I decided to get a Mother’s Day bear for my mother-in-law. I customised the shirt to say “Tabitha loves Grandma” and I can’t wait to give it to her.

The bear is utterly soft and scrummy. Not too firmly stuffed (I hate that) but not floppy and yuk either. He is just right. The print has come out really well, although the Grandma is a bit squished and not perfect.

When you create your Mother’s Day bear you add in the names using their personalisation software. You can adjust the colour of the text, and the font you use. You are, however, limited to only 15 characters per name.

The Heart Mummy bear sells for £25 and comes in a free luxury gift box that is, I have to say, really lovely. This big blue box is reminiscent of American movies where they open big boxes of soft paper to reveal gorgeous frocks. I love it. I wish I didn’t have to give it away.

If you fancy giving a bear to a grandma or mother-in-law you can personalise a bear with just their name for £20, or you can give one to your partner for all her hard work which has a big heart and your names in the middle.

These bears are a little above the cost line, I agree, but they are excellent quality and feel really furry as opposed to plasticky and stiff. A buy that will last for ages and that’s wonderfully sentimental.

I am surprised they are selling Mother’s Day chocolates at half price already, considering that the day hasn’t happened yet, but who am I to look a gift horse in the eye. If those two collections are a bit pricey for you, then take a look at the chocolate heart box for £6.99, or the continental milk collection for £5.49 instead.

There are only six items in the Thorntons Mother’s Day sale, but they are all really good value for money.

FREEBIE: Funky Pigeon FREE £3 Credit

by Sarah Macdonald in Freebies on 21 March, 2011 at 12:00 pm

FREEBIE: Funky Pigeon FREE £3 CreditIf you haven't been watching the TV lately then you might have missed the Funky Pigeon adverts and you won't have a clue who I'm talking about.

Funky Pigeon produce personalised greeting cards for, pretty much, any occasion - birthdays, anniversaries, because you need to make amends for some sort of misdemeanour or...MOTHER'S DAY (<----- 3 April, DON'T forget!)

There are funny cards, hilarious cards, cutesy cards and lovey-dovey cards and all can be personalised by you.

Now, I'm rather a fan of getting something for nothing and this deal fits that bill perfectly.

If you register with Funky Pigeon - just your name, email and phone number - then add six event reminders to your calendar, Funky Pigeon will credit your account with £3 which is enough for one personalised card.

If you get your card sorted and ordered before 2pm then it will be printed and dispatched to the very same day (obviously not on Saturdays) and standard UK delivery is free too.

I want to know who on earth came up with the name Funky Pigeon; far too funny.

There are other ways to get free credit - refer friends and you'll get £3 for each one who joins because of you, and if you add £20 to your account Funky Pigeon will give you a fiver; can't be bad.

Four Nights In Majorca £23 PP @ Travel Republic

Four Nights In Majorca £23 PP @ Travel Republic

Fancy getting away to Majorca for the bank holiday weekend in May? Well Travel Republic have got just the itinerary for you. Try four nights in Majorca for a family of four at only £23 per person including flights and accommodation.

This is a stunning holiday deal that stuart9787 on HUKD discovered. He deserves a lot of credit for finding this! You fly with Ryanair from Stansted airport (there are other airports available at this price but you’ll have to check) on 01 May to Palma Mallocra.

The total cost for two adults and two children (flights only) is £48 but to get this price you will need to take only 10kgs of luggage and pay using a prepay card. The accommodation has mixed reviews but, for this price, you really can’t ask for much. You can play around with different options, though, so if you pay more you can get better accommodation but the Europa apartments work out at £44 per person.

The total cost is £92 for a family of four and you return on 05 May. You will need to play around with the link to find the accommodation and fare matches, but it won’t take long and the price is worth it.

Makeup Works Gift Box Review

Makeup Works Gift Box Review

The Makeup Works gift box sells for £39.99 which sounds pricey but actually includes quite a lot of lovely kit for the aspiring make-up lover. The set would make a stunning Mother’s Day present for someone who still uses old and tatty brushes, or who hasn’t quite moved past the days of using her fingers or cotton pads to apply make-up.

The box comes packaged beautifully, wrapped in a black ribbon with the pseudo-leather wallet inside. You get a set of six professional make-up brushes neatly packaged inside the wallet that folds up truly tiny for easy carrying in a handbag.

There is a large bushy brush for bronzer or powder, an angled brush for blusher, an angled brush for lining and lids, a flat eyeshadow brush, a round blending brush and a retractable lip brush. I have never owned any brushes before (stop shouting in horror) so this set has pretty much sorted me out for life.

You also get a neutral eyeshadow palette that has four basic colours to suit most skin tones. I tend to prefer these colours so it was a complete score for me, but people who prefer bolder colours may not be as entranced. The mascara included is lovely. It slips on easily and gives a nice thickness to the lashes without being too clumpy or making you look like you are a goth rocker.

The £39.99 gets you a complete make-up starter kit that will be hugely appreciated by any mum this Mother’s Day. Plus, if you have a mum that isn’t a dab hand at applying her make-up, they have included a tutorial DVD by make-up artist Trisha Chandler. It has brilliant tips for a quick daytime routine, perfect for mums.

The kit is worth £60, you pay around £40. Bargain.
