SportJock Action Maternity Sports Bra Review

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Reviews on 13 April, 2013 at 5:00 pm

SportJock Action Maternity Sports Bra ReviewIt's widely known that pregnancy can make a woman grumpy. That’s definitely true in my case - at 18 weeks pregnant with my third child I am prone to the occasional hormonal flip out, and have begun to contemplate wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the warning: Angry Pregnant Woman: KEEP CLEAR.

But if there’s one thing guaranteed to keep me calm and get the happy hormones flowing at this stage, it’s hitting the treadmill for half an hour or going for a (very graceless) run along the beach.

Which is why it surprises me that it’s so difficult to find decent maternity sportswear. I have Googled endlessly for running togs that work with a bump but so far my quest to feel comfortable whilst working out with a baby on board has yielded nothing.

Until last week when, on the brink of giving up trying to wriggle into my normal running gear, I stumbled across www.boobiemilk.co.uk and the wonder that is the SportJock Action front-fastening sports bra. I honestly almost wept with joy.

At £25.99 and with a zip-fastening front it’s a joy to put on - pregnancy can be undignified enough with having to suffer the humiliation of trying to squeeze your melons into a pull-on sports bra. And with no wires, it’s ideal to wear both as a standard maternity and / or nursing bra, or when you need some extra support whilst exercising during pregnancy (or in my case, attempting to).

Mine’s grey and the sizing is super-easy to figure out: small, medium or large. The CoolMax and Supplex fabric really does keep you cool once you work up a sweat, but unlike so much maternity wear, the SportJock Action bra looks pretty cool too.

Which in my view makes it priceless.

Merlot Half Moon Maternity Dress By Cravematernity.co.uk Review

by Sarah Macdonald in Reviews on 26 September, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Merlot Half Moon Maternity Dress By Cravematernity.co.uk ReviewUtter the words 'maternity clothes' and you'll probably picture big baggy dresses, in terrible floral prints, that were cut from the same pattern as a two-man tent - in fact, attach a couple of guy ropes to each end and said maternity dress could double-up as the aforementioned tent!

If you don't picture tent dresses at the mere thought of maternity wear then perhaps you see overstretched leggings coupled with an over sized t-shirt?  OR maybe a pair of standard issue baggy maternity jeans with the obligatory stretched jersey belly panel, that can only be worn with a long line shirt or t-shirt.

I was pregnant with my first two children in the mid 90s, the days when all maternity wear was frumpy and, quite frankly, hideous.  I tried to find something stylish and elegant to wear to a Christening during my second pregnancy and ended up having to beg my mum to make me something; my overstretched leggings and baggy t-shirt really weren't going to cut it for that event.

I couldn't search across the vastness of the Internet, have some clothes sent to me to try and send back if they weren't any good either - the Internet, as we know it today, didn't exist then!

Fast forward 17 years and how things have changed; today's pregnant mums have a huge selection of maternity wear to choose from online, ranging from everyday casual items, outfits suitable for work, to something a little more special.

We were sent a Merlot Half Moon maternity dress by Cravematernity.co.uk - an online maternity wear specialist - to review...

Emma Jane Maternity Tights Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 2 April, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Emma Jane Maternity Tights Review

It can be really hard to find comfort in pregnancy, and sometimes finding both comfort and style can be downright challenging. With my first pregnancy I was lucky, in a sense as I was heavily pregnant through the height of summer, and what to wear wasn’t such a huge issue – I could be comfortable in an A-line dress and flip flops.  During this pregnancy, however, most of my ‘large’ stage has been in the very dead of winter. And I have found it very hard to stay warm, and comfortable, and still look half decent on top of it!

Finding a decent pair of tights to go with the ever expanding middle has been a challenge too. If they fit in the leg, they’re too small in the waist, and I’ve torn more than a pair of tights trying to hike them up over the bump, so I was really pleased to find Emma Jane’s Maternity Tights.

They are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses – deniers, as that’s called in stocking world – and I tried a pair of 60 Denier tights as I was going for added warmth.

There are a few things worth mentioning about these. Firstly, they’re pretty hardy and I despite my awkward dressing routine, sitting, then standing, and sometimes needing hubby to help put things over my feet if I couldn’t reach due to one or other pregnancy ailment, these never laddered or ripped. My toe nails have been a bit longer than was probably acceptable, and the toes haven’t developed holes. The gusset expands with your belly, and they’re a fantastic length: I haven’t had to hike these up every so often to get the crotch back to crotch height…. Yes, you tall lady at the back there, you know what I mean, don’t you!

The final thing that impressed about these tights is how long they’ve lasted. Perhaps it’s because they are a thicker variety than normal tights, but they’ve not snagged in the wash, they’ve not torn under increased growth, and they’ve been perfect for wearing under trousers or skirts and have even helped keep me warm.

Well worth the money, I recommend these to any pregnant mums out there!

Melba London Maternity Wear Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 24 March, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Melba London Maternity Wear ReviewI was really lucky in this pregnancy to be able to try out some fantastic brands and clothes and try a wide variety of things that in my first pregnancy I never tried, because, quite frankly, I didn't know they existed. My maternity clothes were off the shelves from leading baby and maternity shops and that was all I wore or knew.  This time round, however, the World Wide Web has been my friend, and not only have I found things that have been comfortable, and practical, but also feminine and simply lovely.

One of my favourite items of clothing this pregnancy has been Black Maternity Camisole and the Roll Top Trousers from Melba London.

The camisole is beautifully soft and stretchy and has a lace trim at the neckline and shoulders. This trim is wide enough to cover your bra straps, so you don't lose the valuable support in that area, and the ruching around the belly area is incredibly flattering as it allows the top to be form fitting and grow with your bump, which with a beautiful bump can be very sensual and certainly made me feel very feminine.

Of course, in this weather I wear it under something else all the time, and have loved that it is so form fitting that it almost hides the other lumps and bumps and adds in creating the blooming beauty mirage, whether 100% true or not!

The trousers are just as lovely. They're soft and flowy and again, incredibly feminine. I think that's probably to do with the slight bell-bottom flair, which is great as it removes emphasis ever so slightly from the abundant hips. It also has a roll-top, so it can easily be worn under or over your bump, as you prefer and feel most comfortable.

Both wash very well and dry very quickly and are very good value for money.

P.S. Melba London have offered PlayPennies readers an exclusive 20% off until the end of July.

To use this code, go to the Shopping Basket and enter it in the Coupon code box. When accepted it will show on your order.

Now I tested this code out in several different ways. First I tried it with two clearance items. The code didn't work. Next I tried it on a full price item, and it did work. However, when I added a second full price item to my basket the code stopped working.

So it would seem that this works only if you're buying a single item. I went back and tried it on a single item from the sale, and it worked. This was the Denim Skirt, which had been reduced to £25 from £45.99, and with the code this dropped to £20. Standard delivery on the site, which is second class, is free.

Bravado Maternity And Nursing Bras Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 9 January, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Bravado Maternity And Nursing Bras ReviewWhen I was pregnant with my daughter I went to a well known baby shop and bought a few nursing bras. I didn’t really see the point of ‘special’ bras for breastfeeding, so wasn’t interested in spending much money on them.

This time round I was given a couple of Bravado nursing bras and I am seriously surprised by the difference in quality and feel.

I’ve been wearing the bliss and seamless bras for a few months now, and have to say that I am in love with these bras, even if I wasn’t pregnant and breastfeeding. As a fairly, erm… endowed, woman, I often find that bras simply don’t offer support and even with underwire I can end up with my cleavage looking quite droopy unless the straps are quite tight, which sometimes means they cut into my shoulders.

With the Bravado bras I’ve not had that problem. They have something called Flexi-Fit which is a substitute for underwire and the support is amazing. They also have a foam pad layer which gives your breast a lovely shape. And if you’re wearing a nursing pad to stop milk leakages, you can’t see it through your clothes as the foam layer provides a false second skin.

The Bliss Nursing Bra has beautiful detailing and a touch of lace, as well as a plunging neckline and silky finish, so even though you’re wearing a nursing bra, you can feel feminine and sensual in your underwear, rather than just functional and motherly.

It also comes with an additional clip to give you extra cup size as your breasts expand, and an additional back clasp to give you about five centimetres of growing room, which I thought was a really nice touch.

The  Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra is completely seamless so if you’re wearing anything skin hugging, there are no unsightly lines.

As someone who spent the first two years of motherhood not understanding why people would spend money on nursing bras when you can get away with using your normal bra throughout, Bravado have converted me, and I can imagine wearing these long after I’ve stopped having and nursing my babies.

Bravado don’t have a UK shop, but there’s a list of retailers here that sell their products.

Black Duffle Maternity Coat £29 @ JoJo Maman Bebe

Black Duffle Maternity Coat £29 @ JoJo Maman Bebe

JoJo Maman Bebe have a fantastic discount on this Black Duffle Maternity Coat. It is selling at just £29 instead of £79. The only negative is that they only have it available in sizes Small and Medium which equates to UK sizes 8 – 14.

I am one of the most tight-fisted people I know. I will happily support charities and give to people in need and so on, but when it comes to handing over money for stuff, I just don’t like forking out cash! Which is why I have gone this whole winter without a coat: I cannot justify spending £70-odd  for a coat I’m going to wear for just a few months!! £29 changes the game a little though, and even I would happily pay that for a coat. (For the record, I haven’t been cold – I’ve just been wearing my hubby’s!)

The Black Duffle Maternity Coat is 35” in length and is made of 40% wool, 60% polyester, and is dry clean only.

Up To Half Price Off On Maternity Clothes @ Mothercare

There’s up to half price off maternity wear in Mothercare’s sale.

I must admit, I’m about the least stylish pregnant mama on the block, because I cannot get myself to hand over cash or card on clothes I’m only going to be wearing for a very short period of time. I once had to pay £200 for a bridesmaid’s dress and then an additional £100 to have it tailored to fit my 7 month belly and it still stings when I think of it! Especially since it now hangs in my wardrobe unable to be worn without being tailored again!

Anyway, those are extravagances, and with the 50% off sale at Mothercare, there’s a much more affordable way to dress.

They have Leggings from £11, Bootcut Jean with Microfibre Over the Bump Band for £22.50 and Nursing Tops from just £5 (although that one is nearer 75% off.

You’ll also find a Maxi Dress for £10.80 and Skirts from £13.50.

Delivery is free for all orders over £50, collection in store is free and delivery is £4.95 if your total is under £50.

Summer Sale @ Bras4Mums

Summer Sale @ Bras4Mums

There’s a sale on maternity and nursing bras, maternity and nursing nightwear and swimwear at Bras4Mums at the moment. While the blurb says there’s up to 50% off, there’s a lot more than that on some items.

Bras 4 Mums is one of those companies that takes maternity and nursery underwear out of the realm of the dull and into the sensual, catering for mums who still recognise their womanhood despite their childbearing capabilities.

You’re not confined to plain white bras with nursing fronts here. Have a look:

The HOTmilk Her Desire Was Dangerous Nursing Bra was £34.40 but is now £13.75 is a black sheer mesh overlays an opulent red microfiber and black lace bra.

If you’re going for pretty over sexy, the HOTmilk She Blushes in Delight Nursing Bra is the same price, but is a pink rose embroidered mesh combining beautifully with soft honey cream lace, and a scattering of rosettes.

For nightwear there are such items as HOTmilk Successful in her Ruse Breastfeeding Nightdress down to £41.95 instead of £59.95 or the  HOTmilk Lost in the Moment Pyjama Pant with ribbed cotton waistbands and drawstrings for adjustable comfort and are trimmed too in the soft cotton modal frill for £19.95 instead of £28.50.

There are 65 items to choose from, so there should be a little something for everyone.

Mamas And Papas Up To 50% Off Sale

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 28 June, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Mamas And Papas Up To 50% Off SaleWell, as it says in the title, there’s up to 50% off at Mamas and Papas on pushchairs, nursery furniture, nursery interiors and some baby and maternity clothing.

I really love Mamas and Papas, but can pretty much count on one hand the items I’ve bought  from them, because most of the time, they’re out of my price range. However, right now, with up to 50% off I’m finding it hard to find reasons not to buy just a little something here and there.

While there are loads of offers in store, here are a few of the web exclusives I thought you might be interested in:

  • The Skate 3 in 1 - City Scape travel system is half price, down from £675 to £337.50.While I’m not a buggy kind of mum, that does seem like a fairly good saving!
  • Similarly, the Madison Collection in Ivory White was £999 and is now £499 – a whopping saving on nursery furniture there.
  • The gorgeous Barnaby Button Quilt and Pillowcase Set which is normally an eye-watering £72 is now £36.
  • While some hate them for restricting the baby, my daughter is a kicker and her blankets never stay on, so when she was a baby, we loved our baby sleeping bags, and these are down to £15 from £30.

These are just a few of the web exclusives, but there are plenty more to check out.

Carriwell Maternity Underwear Half Price @ Boots

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 22 June, 2011 at 10:00 am

Carriwell Maternity Underwear Half Price @ BootsBoots are selling selected Carriwell maternity underwear for half price at the moment.

I remember when I was pregnant with my eldest son - yes I can remember that far back actually - and (foolishly) proclaiming to the world that I wouldn't be changing my wardrobe just because I was going to get rounder.

I remember my mum laughing at me and telling me how amazing her maternity support underwear was to wear when she was pregnant with me; I think it was the name 'girdle' that put me off.

But there came a time when I had to admit defeat and I bought some proper maternity underwear; OH. MY. GOODNESS it was like nothing on earth, I felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off my front and back - this was yet another of those times when my mum really did know best.

There are some great Carriwell maternity underwear and support items up for grabs 'in' Boots at half price.

Post birth shapewear knickers in black and white are now £5.99 each, instead of £11.99.

There are seamless maternity support tops, also in black and white, which are £12.49 now instead of £24.99.

Also included are pretty maternity bras, pretty lace maternity knickers, a black nursing swimsuit (I didn't even know these existed!) along with a fabulous bump support belt.

If you've been putting off dabbling in the world of maternity underwear then I highly recommend diving in, you won't regret it and you'll save some money on these Carriwell maternity underwear half price deals too; marvellous.

Robe Around Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 18 February, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Robe Around Review

Ah! I'm sure we've all been there: fresh out the shower with nothing but a hand towel on the rail, sprinting through the house with a squeel in case anyone sees you? Well, we received the Robe Around for review, and sent it off to PlayPennies mum Denise, who is currently 31 weeks pregnant and feels that nothing short of a tent fits her.

Denise has two overnight Spa weekends planned before her due date – one with her hubby and one for her Hen Weekend – and says, “Stripping to my swimsuit in a room full of slim girls I barely know is daunting enough as it is, let alone now I am the size of a whale. I know that the hotels we are staying at will provide robes and towels but I a realistic in my expectations as to how much they will actually cover.

Even when I am not pregnant it is a battle to get these towels to meet in the middle, cover my bum and more importantly, stay wrapped around me. You always seem to end up with a triangular gap where the towel meets, the slightest breath of air and it all comes undone into a heap around your ankles leaving you a lovely shade of embarrassed.

Robe Around Review I know what she means. I hate the towels at spas. The Robe-Around. Designed specifically with pregnant women in mind, the towelling wrap-around robe has a clever pleat which expands with the growing baby bump, ensuring complete privacy for the wearer.

When I was offered the chance to review the robe around I almost tore their hand off. Anything that would afford me a bit more coverage on my spa day was a bonus in my eyes.”

The black towelling Robe-Around boasts a strong Velcro fastening to ensure comfortable fitting for women of all shapes and sizes. Unlike a regular towel secured over the bust, which always leaves a triangular area of the pregnant body exposed due to gaping, the Robe-Around’s ingenious pleat ensures the mum-to-be’s dignity remains intact at all times.

Sporty Bump’s spokesperson, Lesley Singleton, comments, “Women are always conscious of their body shape, even more so during pregnancy when such significant changes take place. Thanks to the expandable pleated section of the Robe-Around, pregnant women can feel relaxed in public places, such as the swimming baths, gym or health club. It’s also the perfect holiday cover-up, ideal when relaxing by the pool or on the beach.

My hopes for the Robe Around was that it would do as it says,” Denise tells us, “cover my ever growing bump and stay in place. I was also hoping that it would not look too different from a normal towel so that I felt the same as everyone else in the Spa.”

Denise was a little dubious when she first realised the Robe Around was a 'one-size-fits-all' towel. “I was fairly big pre pregnancy let alone now that I am 31 weeks. I must admit that I was not expecting the towel to meet in the middle when I first tried it on but there is more than enough room and plenty of growing room too. I also really like the length. Far too often towels barely skim past bum level. It was nice to have a towel that actually covered up the bits you didn’t want exposing.

The Velcro on the Robe Around is very strong won't easily slip off, and even withstands the tugging little fingers of Denise's 4-year-old son.

Robe Around Review The negatives are few, but dedfinitely worth a mention: The towel seems very rough. I have washed it a couple of times but it still feels rougher than usual towels and is still leaving me covered in black fluff each time I use it.”

That aside”, says Denise, “I still think it is a great product. I will be packing it in my hospital bag for a hopeful water birth and I am sure I will use it post birth as we all know that post birth tummies are not what we hope they will be.”

And Finally...

The Robe around is available from Sporty Bump at a cost of £20.00 plus £5.00 postage. It is 100% cotton and machine washable.

And finally, from Denise, “I would certainly recommend this for any mums-to-be whether it will be used in public changing rooms or just at home it makes a nice change to find a product to maintain your modesty during pregnancy.”

Bump To 3 Promo Code: 20% Off

It's not often that a promo code also applies to items on sale, but that is the case with the 20% off promo code with Bump To 3, suppliers of products that 'make parenting easier'

Get 20% Off maternity wear and items for babies with Bump To 3

  • Discount: 20%
  • Promotional code: BBS10
  • Expires: 30th January 2010

Bump To 3 sell grobags, clothing for children and babies, maternity clothing, sleep accessories, feeding accessories, travel accessories for when you're out and about, cleaning items, safety equipment, and toys and games.

The clearance section has some pretty good deals, I think.

For example, this nursing smock top was £44.99, so save over 40% and now pay £21.99.

The Doidy Cup, which we reviewed last week, is down to £2.25 instead of the original £3.49. This cup is great for teaching children to drink from a rim rather than a spout avoiding the health issues of continued use of a bottle or teated cup.

The toy sale is equally worth a visit, with items such as the 50 piece Train Set for £17.49, instead of £24.99, or the 100 piece set for £34.00.

And, of course, off all these prices, you'll still get 20% off making the nursing smock under £20.00, the doidy cup less than £2.00 and the train sets, £13.99 and £27.20.

Mamafeelsgood Special Offer: Free Belly Bands With Purchase

Here's an exclusive PlayPennies offer for those of you in the need of some nice maternity wear. Mamafeelsgood are offering all the PlayPennies parents a free belly band, with any order they make!

How to get your free belly band: Once you've placed an order on Mamafeelsgood, simply drop an email to help@mamafeelsgood.com, quoting your order number, and say "PlayPennies free belly band please!"

If you are scratching your head and wondering what a belly band might be, it's simply a really handy piece of clothing that goes under your regular t-shirts, so your belly does not inelegantly protrude! I think they're a very good idea, because I really don't like my belly hanging out. I know some people don't mind it at all, but it's not for me.

I recently wrote a bit of a Mamafeelsgood review, where I got to test out some of their clothing. Have a read if you want to know more.

Mamafeelsgood Maternity Wear Review

by Emma Kelly in Reviews on 22 August, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Mamafeelsgood Maternity Wear Review

UK based maternity wear site Mamafeelsgood.com, gave me the opportunity to try out some of their maternity wear, as I have just had a baby girl, and I am perfect for product testing!

I received a plain breastfeeding top, short-sleeved, in pretty pink (pictured bottom left).

The first time I tried on the new top, I went off to the kitchen to grab my lunch. My other half had pain-stakingly heated up a can of Heinz tomato soup (my favourite!) and presented it to me with pride. With my very first spoonful, I slopped some of the reddest red soup down my brand pink new t-shirt! I had to take it off immediately, rinse the spots as best I could, and stick it in the wash.... to be tried out another day.

So, second time lucky - I put the top on, freshly laundered and smelling nice. The t-shirt had a nice feel on the skin, as it was 100% cotton. The material is thick and good quality. As it is really 2 t-shirts in one, it is quite heavy, so it would be very warm if you were wearing it on a hot summer's day.

For the breast-feeding aspect, you simply lift up the top layer, and the underneath layer is just like a vest top with huge arm holes, which you can move around to wherever you need them to be. It's pretty good at protecting your dignity - I won't show you any piccies of that though!

Now, I will comment on the sizes - I tried an XL, and I am about a size 16 for normal clothing. I did find the XL a bit tight around the belly (especially post-pregnancy), so maybe have a good look at the sizing if you happen to be buying from Mamafeelsgood.

I had a browse of the various designs on their site, some of which I have pictured below. They're very trendy, and not just your plain, bog-standard maternity wear. I really like the more "rock" type tees, like the Music Sounds Better , the Lips or the Island Black.

Price-wise, the top I tested came in at £19.99, which is fairly reasonable for a new maternity top. The long sleeve graphic print tops seem to be a few quid extra, ranging up to £21.99 instead.

After pregnancy and being pretty limited in what you can wear, it's quite nice to treat yourself to some new clothes - what I like about the Mamafeelsgood designs is that they could be work any time, and aren't just seen as maternity wear.

Up To 80% Off @ Jojo Maman Bebe With up to 80% off at Jojo Maman Bebe AND free delivery there's bound to be a few items here that will save you a few pounds, and the sale is on instore too if you happen to have a Jojo Maman Bebe shop near you.

Clothes from here have always been stylish and good quality and, quite rightly, that's reflected in the price.

Everything is ordered nicely on the site so you can look for kids clothes sale items for under £5, under £10 or whatever; the same applies to maternity wear and there's a practical product section too.

The prices within the sale section reflect the reduced prices - so you don't need to put any codes in at the checkout - and you'll see what the original prices were when you click on individual items (does that make sense?).

Up To 80% Off @ Jojo Maman Bebe I really like these reversible hooded sweatshirts which have been reduced from £18 to £9, and these clamdigger trousers (any trousers that are called 'clamdiggers' are great in my book!)

There are also some limited special offers that expire on 9 July like these 6-pack of muslin squares for £9 AND they are buy one get one free, now THAT'S a bargain!

Up To 80% Off @ Jojo Maman Bebe Ever since my youngest was born we've found a whole host of practical uses for muslin squares and would never be without them now.

Don't forget there's nothing to pay for standard delivery so I'd hot-foot it over to Jojo Maman Bebe before everything sells out!
