The Hydrant Hands Free Water Bottle Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 7 April, 2012 at 5:00 pm

The Hydrant Hands Free Water Bottle Review

The Hydrant is a hands free water bottle that is marketed to those on bed rest, in wheel chairs and so on, and is specifically useful during childbirth or breastfeeding. Basically, it’s a standard water bottle with a clip handle so that it can be hung in unusual places, with a 44” pipe and mouth piece.

I first used the Hydrant during my second baby’s birth. We had a home water birth and there wasn’t space to put a bottle that I could reach it, so having a bottle that could rest on the floor with a drinking nozzle that reached all the way up to me was pretty perfect. I drank deep mouthfuls of fresh water between contractions, as I found the gas and air really dried my mouth out, so it was perfect for that.

Then, afterwards, I also found having a waterbottle handy for breastfeeding, which also makes me terribly thirsty, was particularly helpful. I have a bottle I carry around with me, but when a newborn wants to feed they want to feed now, so being able to pop onto my ‘spot’ on the sofa and have a one litre bottle there ready and waiting dedicated to this purpose is pretty great too.

The most useful place for me so far, however, has been in bed at night. I take it up with me when I go to bed and clip it onto the basinet which currently serves as a blanket storage basket. As I cosleep with two under three at the moment, I get very, very thirsty during and after night feeds, and theres little worse than lying in bed with your tongue stuck to your pallet from dehydration, but not wanting to move because you don’t want to wake up your babies!  The Hydrant is just there, I can grab the tube and rehydrate to my heart’s content, without moving much other than my forearm. Fabulous.

This bottle is meant for cold drinks, not hot, and it is dishwasher safe. If used in hospital the tube and valve should be changed and sterilised daily – and as this bottle is highly recommended for c-section recovery, it would be worth having spares.

I’m really chuffed with The Hydrant. It’s such a simple idea, but so useful. And it seems the NCT agree as they sell it in their shop, and there are great reviews on the NCT site from other mums who’ve used it too.

Emma Jane Maternity Tights Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 2 April, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Emma Jane Maternity Tights Review

It can be really hard to find comfort in pregnancy, and sometimes finding both comfort and style can be downright challenging. With my first pregnancy I was lucky, in a sense as I was heavily pregnant through the height of summer, and what to wear wasn’t such a huge issue – I could be comfortable in an A-line dress and flip flops.  During this pregnancy, however, most of my ‘large’ stage has been in the very dead of winter. And I have found it very hard to stay warm, and comfortable, and still look half decent on top of it!

Finding a decent pair of tights to go with the ever expanding middle has been a challenge too. If they fit in the leg, they’re too small in the waist, and I’ve torn more than a pair of tights trying to hike them up over the bump, so I was really pleased to find Emma Jane’s Maternity Tights.

They are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses – deniers, as that’s called in stocking world – and I tried a pair of 60 Denier tights as I was going for added warmth.

There are a few things worth mentioning about these. Firstly, they’re pretty hardy and I despite my awkward dressing routine, sitting, then standing, and sometimes needing hubby to help put things over my feet if I couldn’t reach due to one or other pregnancy ailment, these never laddered or ripped. My toe nails have been a bit longer than was probably acceptable, and the toes haven’t developed holes. The gusset expands with your belly, and they’re a fantastic length: I haven’t had to hike these up every so often to get the crotch back to crotch height…. Yes, you tall lady at the back there, you know what I mean, don’t you!

The final thing that impressed about these tights is how long they’ve lasted. Perhaps it’s because they are a thicker variety than normal tights, but they’ve not snagged in the wash, they’ve not torn under increased growth, and they’ve been perfect for wearing under trousers or skirts and have even helped keep me warm.

Well worth the money, I recommend these to any pregnant mums out there!

Boppy Feeding Pillow Review

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 23 March, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Boppy Feeding Pillow ReviewBoppy is probably one of the most popular names in the feeding pillow industry. It has received the American Baby Best of the Year award 7 times in the last 8 years and costing anything from £30 to about £50 they’re not cheap, but there is a large following of Boppy fans.

The Boppy pillow is a donut shaped ring cushion, suitable for breast or bottle feeding. It is quite small so can easily sit on the mother’s lap and is meant to adjust to pretty much anyone’s size to fit around them. I didn’t find it very comfortable around me, it squashed a bit and makes me feel restrictred, but it was fine on my lap.

Maternity And Breastfeeding Lingerie 15% Off @ Boobie Milk : PlayPennies Exclusive

If you want to get the mum-to-be in your life a really special something for Mother’s Day, or the new mother something that can help her feel feminine and beautiful in the sometimes difficult months post birth, we have a fantastic offer for you.

Boobie Milk is a supplier of maternity and nursing lingerie, and they stock some of the nicest brands of maternity bras and underwear you’ll find. As a mama-to-be with a two week overdue bump myself, I have absolutely loved not only the service I’ve received from Boobie Milk, but also the products, and cannot recommend them highly enough.

So what’s the offer?

Boobie Milk is offering PlayPennies readers 15% off on their range of maternity and nursing wear

  • Discount: 15% off
  • Expires: 23 March 2012
  • Exceptions: None - also valid on Special Offers
  • Discount Code: playpennies15

Of course this doesn’t just have to be for Mother’s Day, as every mum to be will know pregnancy changes your breasts, in shape and size, and the birth of a child does the same whether you breastfeed or not, so having the option of having an at home fitting if you live in Kent or surrounding areas or an online advice service if you don’t is pretty awesome.

When your body is no longer your own, and your once comfy underwear is cutting into your skin, it’s a real pleasure to be treated to professional and helpful service, and walk away feeling feminine and sensual, bump and all.

By Carla Mum And Baby Support Pillow

by Luschka van Onselen in Reviews on 2 February, 2012 at 5:00 pm

By Carla Mum And Baby Support Pillow

I’ve been using the By Carla Mum And Baby Support Pillow in bed at night since around 25 weeks pregnant, and it is my constant bed time companion.

This is a pillow I can melt into. It is firm, but not rigid, and despite looking quite ‘solid’ in the pictures, it moulds into your body in a way that gives fantastic support.

It is quite a long pillow, which means that I can cuddle into it with my arms, but still have it between my knees, which is really helpful in keeping me on my left side as I tend to end up on my back through the night, otherwise.

Another exceptionally useful function is as bump protector – my toddler still ends up in my bed most of the night and performs a perfect windmill, often resulting in blows to my anatomy. With the By Carla Support Pillow firmly in place, the blows never come near me.

This pregnancy support pillow comes with a removable cover, and in a particularly forward thinking move, they’ve included a second cover, so while one’s washing and drying, the other can be in use and the pillow protected.

It also comes in a reusable zipped bag, so you can travel with your pillow, or store it when it’s not in use.

I’ve not used it as a breastfeeding or bottlefeeding support cushion yet, but it is firm enough that you could put your baby on it to protect them, and I think it would be perfect for letting them lie on too, belly on the pillow, to roll out wind and trapped air. I did that with my daughter  a lot but on a square pillow folded in half, so this is pretty perfect.

The covers are funky and the pillow is fantastic quality. I highly recommend this as a pregnancy sleep improvement strategy.

Next Maternity 3 Pack T-shirts 50% Off @ Next

There is more than just this 3-pack of t-shirts on sale at Next at the moment so if you are looking for cheap maternity wear, then it won’t hurt for you to see some of the other special offers too. The short sleeve pack is perfect for summer (when it finally arrives) and is only £12 down from £24.

The t-shirt 3-pack is available in sizes 8,10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 at the moment and the colours don’t seem to be adjustable – what you see is what you get. Consider that they are dusty pink, black and aqua they aren’t really offensive colours at all.

Other items on the maternity rack in the sale include batwing blouses in green or red down to £8, a gold cardigan down from £28 to £14, and mix fabric t-shirts for £9 in different colours. The 3-pack is definitely the best deal of the lot as you’re paying less than £5 per t-shirt.

Maternity & Paternity Pay Demystified!

by Sam Thewlis in Features on 11 June, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Maternity & Paternity Pay Demystified!

Having a baby is so rewarding in so many ways, but unfortunately few of them financially. When you first find out you are pregnant, or look to try for a baby, one of the major concerns is always going to be how you will manage while you are on maternity leave.

However, the Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) and Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) regulations have improved over the last few years, and you may not know exactly what you are entitled to get in terms of both pay and leave. But never fear, PlayPennies is here to guide you through the maternity and paternity pay nightmare and make sure your family has the very best (financial) start it can.

Maternity & Paternity Pay Demystified!Step 1: Ask your employer

Many people make the mistake of assuming that the State offering is all they are going to get, which is not necessarily so. Particularly if you work for a large company, finding out about their own maternity and paternity pay benefits and packages could give you a nice surprise. Remember, your employer has to offer you statutory benefits as a minimum, but they may choose to offer more generous packages, particularly if they like to invest in their staff. Details of how much you might get are often included in a Staff Handbook, but if in doubt speak to your boss or your Human resources (personnel) department for clarification.

A word of warning though - many employers who do offer maternity benefits or paternity pay over and above the statutory minimum may require you to return to work for a certain length of time or risk having to pay back the extra cash. Whether or not you choose to return to work, or to return on a flexible or part-time basis is naturally a decision for you and your family, but if you might have to repay money, it is always better to know this in advance!

There’s also a range of lotions and potions from Clinica, including face wash, day cream, vitamin E cream and the aforementioned  tissue oil.

Mamas & Papas SALE: Save Up To Half PriceHeads up everyone! The Mamas and Papas Sale is on NOW! Pop on over there and you'll save yourself up to half price on all sorts of everything baby related.

Mamas and Papas, Mamas & Papas, M&P - whatever you want to call them - is one place I miss mooching around now that all my kids are older.

I adored looking around all their different nursery interior collections; Millie and Boris were my absolute favourite and I can't bring myself to part with the Millie and Boris fleece blanket my youngest had when he was born.

If you're preggars and looking for a Crimbo party outfit then REJOIC because selected maternity wear is included in the Mamas and Papas Sale too.

If you've already had your baby then there are discounts on some VERY cute Christmas baby clothes.

Pushchairs, prams, nursery furniture, gifts for new arrivals, Christmas gifts - you name it, Mamas and Papas have got it and there are savings to be made on most of it.

Things tend to go out of stock pretty sharpish when there's a Mamas and Papas Sale on, so I wouldn't dawdle too much if something catches your eye.

You can arrange for home delivery or collection in-store, it's up to you and whether or not you want to brave the big wide world in the last couple of weeks of pre-Christmas madness!

Spend, Spend, Spend

by Emma Kelly in Features on 5 June, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Today's feature comes to you from the pen of Harriet, blogger at Is There A Plan B, who we recently featured on PlayPennies Loves.

I’m new to Playpennies, and you may think my title misses the point rather.  But I’m very good at not spending money.  It’s one of my talents. I always wanted to be the sort of mother who would randomly buy her children beautiful things, but I don’t, because I can’t ever justify it.  So I end up in Primark (or, post move, M&Co).

Instead, I’m writing about the opposite.  What are the things that I bought cheaply and now wish I had spent money on? The false economies. The parenting equivalents of value washing up liquid.  Obviously we are all constrained by our personal budgets, but, whatever yours may be, these five things you can justify...

Pushchair

Spend, Spend, Spend

A really good pushchair.  I’m not recommending a brand, because pushchairs are more personal than haircuts. You can admire someone else’s but that doesn’t mean it will work for you.  You need to sit down and think about what your pushchair needs to do, and then you need to spend as much money as it takes to get it.

If you get one that doesn’t do something you want it to, whether that be go off-road, or take a car seat, or let your baby lie totally flat, or go through the front door, it will irritate you beyond words, and you’ll probably end up buying the one you should have got in the first place anyway.

Waterproof

A proper (and I mean proper) waterproof.  It won’t be pretty, it won’t be glamorous, but boy will you thank me when the baby’s screaming,  it’s pouring with rain, you have to get out of the house, and you watch someone else in the same position try and manhandle a brolly and a pram. It doesn’t work. Get a cagoule.

Spend, Spend, SpendNappy bag

A really lovely nappy bag.  I went “Pah! That’s silly and frivolous.  I don’t need a nappy bag I like, it just has to be functional”.  Three years of using it EVERY DAY, and I’m really, really wishing I’d bought this kind of thing.

When you’ve just had a baby and you’re wearing a cagoule, you won’t feel glamorous and lovely, but a glamorous and lovely nappy bag will help.  Get someone to buy it for you as a present.

Bouncer

A stupidly expensive bouncy chair.  Ideally this babysitter balance bouncer from Johnlewis.  Yes, I know. It’s £100 for a bouncy chair.  Bear with me.  We bought this spot bouncer.  It’s £14.  Both our first born and our twins hated it and I thought they just didn’t like bouncing.

Then we borrowed the other and both the twins loved it. I don’t know what Baby Bjorn have done, but whatever it is it works and it was a godsend. I had somewhere I could put one of them down, and know they would be happy for twenty minutes.  That’s worth it.

Microwave

Spend, Spend, Spend

A microwave. You can wean a baby (and/or make up formula milk) without a microwave (I should know, I’ve done it three times) but life’s apparently a lot easier if you’ve got one.

Those are my five essentials, but I’d also not feel ashamed of buying breast-feeding tops and underwired nursing bras to preserve your dignity, give your (ahem) spirits a lift, and make you feel vaguely human...

So that’s it. You have permission to spend money. What are you waiting for?

Click here to use the Mumstheword promotion code online

  • Promotion Code: MTWMB0310
  • Discount: 20% off
  • Expires: 31st March 2010

Mumstheword is a UK based retailer, which sells natural and organic pregnancy product ranges to mums-to-be and their newborn babies. As you might expect, you often pay extra for natural and organic products, so every little discount helps.

On having a quick browse around theMumstheword site, there were a few products that caught my eye. I really like the idea of these breast feeding covers - nice for a bit of privacy when you are nursing. The mint chocolate design would be my choice.

I've never heard of these wrist rattles before, but they're a good idea for the little one! They are only £6.99, or £5.59 once you apply the discount.

When I was testing the promotion code in my cart, delivery for an item was only £1, which is very reasonable. That was for an item less than £15. Spending £15 to £60 incurs a delivery charge of £2.50, and then you reach the free delivery threshold of £60.

Thanks to magicbeans on HUKD for the deal :)
