Personalised Bobblehead Doll £29.99 @ 1minime.comThere are just over two weeks left until Father's Day (19 June) and if you're really stuck for an original pressie then a personalised Bobblehead doll might solve your problem.

Ok, the usual price for a custom Bobblehead doll is £59.99 but if you buy this Groupon voucher you'll be able to pick one up for £29.99, saving yourself £30.

I'd not come across these Bobblehead dolls before but having had a look at their website - click HERE to go there - I'm rather taken with them; they're funny and TOTALLY unique.

You choose the statue body you want, send in a photograph of the person whose head you want to adorn it and then 1minime do the rest!

They'll create a model of the head from the picture you give them and within 48 - 72 hours you'll have your very own minime - or mini-someone-else -  back at home with you.

There are lots of bodies to choose from ranging from sporty bods, hobbies, work bodies and even ones for weddings if you've got Father's Day covered already.

All you have to do is buy this £29.99 deal through Groupon BEFORE 11.59pm on Friday 3 June (that's tomorrow) - the clock is ticking.

Your voucher will activate on Monday 6 June, you won't be able to place your order before then, and is valid until 6 September; you'll have to pay for delivery which is an addition £13.90, I imagine that's to make sure your minime arrives in one piece so won't be by standard 1st Class mail via the posty!

Happy Bobblehead creating!

Revell Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 Lewis Hamilton Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 24 May, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Revell Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 Lewis Hamilton ReviewThe F1 season is upon us and Lewis Hamilton is currently sitting in second spot in the drivers championships. That sounded pretty knowledgeable didn't it? However, it means nothing to me, it is just what PlayPennies dad Andy told me.

He reckoned that the best way to celebrate this fact is to give an F1 mad dad (and he seems to think that most are) the chance to make his own miniature version of Hamilton's F1 car. So I gave him this Revell model car kit to review.

Revell has been making model kits for about the last 60 years. One of these kits is the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 (#2 Lewis Hamilton). Model Hobbies has it on sale right now, marked down from £20 to £18.

According to the blurb on the website, the kit has a "multi-part eight-cylinder engine, a detailed suspension, a detailed cockpit, a true-to-the-original under-floor with diffuser, realistic front and rear wings, authentic tires, rotating wheels and MP4-25 Grand Prix decals for Great Britain, Canada and Bahrain."

Revell Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 Lewis Hamilton ReviewTraditionally for the dads

Andy has fond memories of these model kits himself, from when he was a young lad. He recalls sitting watching his poor Dad frustratingly looking at instruction manuals mumbling, “Insert E 25 into Decal point 103?? Which one is E 25?

It was, he felt, all good practice for that MFI Kitchen flat pack that was ordered a few days ago. "Inevitably though after a few choice words and a several hours later we would have a miniature completed model of a World War 2 Aircraft that my father would proudly show off to my mother. “We’ve finished” he would proclaim with a smug smile. What’s with the ‘we’? My total inclusion in this project was to sit and watch and occasionally hand over part E 25 etc."

This was back in the 1970’s though. A time when there were only three TV channels and the nearest thing to an Xbox360 was a scientific calculator. Yes, a lot has changed since these model kits were at the height of their popularity. So, with all the modern distractions of technological development, do these model kits still have a part to play in a Dad and lads life? According to Andy, the answer is yes.

Revell Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 Lewis Hamilton ReviewDifferent skill levels

The Revell model kits are available in five categories/skills. From level 1, where they are easy to make, requiring no glue or paint up to level 5 which contain over 150 parts requiring a very high level of skill.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 is set at level 3, although Andy felt that even the most unskilled model maker should be able to make this.

The 86 individual pieces that neatly slot together are accompanied by an instruction manual that Andy found easy to use. "Each plastic part is clearly numbered so that even the most useless of kit builders (like me) can build this F1 car. Some of the parts are very small (a fraction of the size of a small fingernail), but with a bit of perseverance and a steady hand they all fit as one so that in the end you have one splendid looking McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 (minus a miniature Lewis Hamilton)."

Use your own metallic paint

The (not quite) finished article is a dull grey mini replica. Andy was a little disappointed. "This is my only minor quibble. The actual car should mostly be a fabulous shiny metallic grey, so although this kit is described as ‘no painting required’ I would take the option of popping down to your local model kit shop and purchasing a small pot of metallic grey paint."  He suggests using the images on the front and side of the packaging and a very fine paintbrush to carefully finish off the kit before entering the next stage of completion.

Revell Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-25 Lewis Hamilton ReviewTricky transfers

Once the paint has dried you then get to add the 100+ transfers to the car. "This is incredibly tricky as you pretty much have to get this right first time. There is no margin for error." Andy comments. He found that if you place the transfer in just slightly the wrong place it can look shoddy. "If you try to remove it slowly to reapply you run the risk of tearing the transfer. A lot of patience is required here."

So, although a small child of say, aged 8+ (with assistance from Dad) could probably manage the actual kit building, the application of the transfers is a much more testing task that lies ahead.

And finally ...

In all, Andy thought it was a great kit and "a fabulous bit of challenging fun for the F1 fan". Drag your youngster away from the 500 channels that now occupy our televisions. Turn the games console off and set yourself up at the dining table for a few hours and with endurance and diligence Dad and the lad will be the proud owners of a fine miniature replica McLaren Mercedes MP4-25.

Review: Organic Fun For Dad

Review: Organic Fun For Dad

The month of June is all about Dad here at PlayPennies and so we’ve been reviewing all sorts of fabulous goodies for him to enjoy. Aubrey Organics have just done a range of organic products for men called Men’s Stock which cover pretty much all the grooming basics.

These products are rather brilliant for Dads as they can even use them while bathing with their little ones without worrying about harmful chemicals or ingredients affecting the little one’s skin. So we sent these off to two of our PlayPennies Dad’s for review.

Men’s Stock Daily Moisturiser

Review: Organic Fun For DadThis lightweight moisturiser includes ingredients like aloe vera, witch hazel, calendula oil and lemon peel (all organic, of course) and has been shown to reduce razor bumps if used twice a day. It costs £11.99 for 59ml.

It’s incredibly runny and you must make sure you read the back of the container or be prepared to be covered in lotion!” said Mike, “The overall product does as it should, and moisturises well and only a small amount goes a really long way.”

Sean agreed, “I found that the product was very liquid which was initially a little disturbing, I’m used to thicker creams, but it definitely does the job well.”

Both of the men felt that the product worked well on their skin but sadly Mike wasn’t too impressed with the smell.

I really didn’t like the smell, it’s really offputting for me,” he said, “And the consistency wasn’t something I really liked either.”

Review: Organic Fun For DadSean felt slightly differently, “I thought the smell was a bit odd but soon got used to it. Also, it rapidly disappeared once the product was rubbed into my skin and I liked the way my skin felt afterwards too.”

The final verdict from both Dads was that the product worked well and that only small amounts were needed to do the job, but that the smell and consistency didn’t appeal to them very much.

Men’s Stock Ginseng Biotin Hair Repair

Review: Organic Fun For DadThis conditioner is designed to strengthen and mend damaged or thinning hair fibres and uses only natural ingredients such as Panaz Ginseng extract, Beta-Carotene and Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. Yes, you get leaf juice in your hair.

Sean found that this did wonderful things to his hair.

I used this as well as my usual conditioner and found that my hair really did feel thicker and cleaner,” he said, “Like the moisturiser, only a small amount is needed each time so I can see this lasting me for ages.”

Mike remained ambivalent about the Mens’ Stock products.

In the few weeks that I used this product, I didn’t see any change to what I use normally,” he said, “Aside from it being a little drying. I think you need a conditioner as well.”

However, in spite of this product not winning Mike over completely, he did agree that a little goes a long way and that the product would last for ages.

Review: Organic Fun For DadSean really liked the way the hair repair smelled too, “It’s got a strangely addictive smell,” he said.

The Ginseng Biotin Hair Repair costs £13.49 and the price did not get a thumbs up from our dads.

I think the products are quite expensive,” said Mike, “However, they would last a long time so the cost would balance out over a period of time.”

And Finally

The Men’s Stock range hasn’t completely stunned and amazed our dads coming in at an average score of around five out of ten. This doesn’t mean that they are a complete dud, though. Sean rated them at six, while Mike had them at about four.

The range looks to be very much about personal taste so perhaps take Dad round to your local stockist before buying them for him. Overall, they did deliver on their promise and they worked well and the fact that they are entirely organic and environmentally friendly definitely adds to their allure.

Review: Personalise Your Father

by Tamsin Oxford in Reviews on 22 June, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Review: Personalise Your Father

See your Dad's name in lights! Enjoy his moment of fame! And then eat it... Or glue it...Or something...

This is the idea behind Getting Personal and some of their rather ingenious products. PlayPennies HQ was sent a couple of these funny and interesting products for review for our month of Dads.

We know that Father’s Day was on Sunday, but we feel that Dads deserve to be spoiled for longer than just 24 hours and are extending the love right up until the end of the month. So, these Father’s Day goodies from Getting Personal are a great way to keep going (and eating).

Dad’s Personalised Chocolate Pudding

Review: Personalise Your FatherThere is only one word that can be used to describe this dessert – yum! But wait...before I get lost in the wonders of Belgian chocolate, I better tell you what it is that makes this a great present for Dad. This pudding can be personalised on the silver foil cover with a special note for the Dad in your life.

You get up to 60 characters to create your personal message and there is also a large printed label calling it ‘Dad’s Ultimate Chocolate Pudding’.

The pudding has 290g of divinely gooey, sticky, scrummy chocolate dessert with big chunks of Belgian chocolate mixed in for love. Oh man. And here’s what our resident Dad had to say...

When I got the pudding I was faintly impressed with the label,” said Mark, “It was a nice touch and because it was from my wife it felt really sweet. It isn’t exactly a monogrammed towel or anything, but I liked it.”

Mark thought that the personalising of the pudding was not as big a deal as the dessert itself.

It may just be me, but I was more interested in the flavour of the pud than the decoration around it,” he said, “In fact, I was worried that it would be a bit crap because so much effort had gone into disguising it.”

Well Mark wasn’t disappointed.

Review: Personalise Your FatherThe pudding takes 90 seconds to heat,” he said, “90 seconds! How low maintenance is that? That’s my kind of dessert. I ran out in the ad break and had a heated dessert complete with cherries and whipped cream before the ads were even finished. Bonus.”

As you can see, Mark went for the whole hog when it came to the serving suggestions on the tin.

The dessert is really good,” he said, “It is a bit gooey in parts and slightly bland, but that may be because I put too much cream on it. Overall I would rate this as being as good as anything I’ve eaten in a restaurant and well worth the price.”

Review: Personalise Your FatherThese personalised puddings come in at £9.95 with a £2.95 delivery charge on top. It is quite expensive for the size which comfortably serves two people with a normal chocolate appetite. Not like me. That would be one serving for my abnormal appetite. Ha!

Overall, I have to say that the novelty factor does add value to the price, as does the taste and supremely fast heating time.

Personalised Superdad Calendar

Review: Personalise Your FatherThe Superdad calendar is really cute with a fun cover image and loads of awesome pics inside. Every single image inside the calendar includes the name of your Dad in a variety of fabulous ways such as on a car, lit by fireworks in the sky and spelled out on the beach.

The calendar was sent off to Chris for review and this is what he had to say, “All the pictures to illustrate the months are really interesting, from cars to Christmas lights. Each picture spells out my name and looks ace.”

The days of the month all have a bit of space, in case the owner wants to write a little memo to remind them of an appointment (or anniversary!!), and so aren’t just about funky personalised photos – it’s useful too!

The product has a really nice glossy finish and is smooth to the touch,” said Chris, “The Calendar also goes from June to June, so it’s perfect for Father’s Day and the rest of the month of June. I’ll probably take it to work with me because it’s a desk calendar and will fit nicely there.”

Review: Personalise Your FatherPlayPennies loves the fact that the calendar is designed to go from June to June – this is such a brilliant idea and makes this so much more personal and ingenious. Also, the personalised images for each month of the year are a very nice touch and they are very masculine and stylish to boot.

For £9.95, this calendar is better value for money than the dessert with much more mileage. It looks and feels very professional and  will last for a long time.

And Finally

Of the two products sent to our Dad Testers at PlayPennies HQ, we have to say that the calendar is the hands down winner. It’s portable, stylish and fun and looks far more expensive than the tenner you’d spend on it.

The dessert is a cute idea but possibly not one that suits the Dads. The guys were more interested in eating it than reading the cover (you know how bad they are at reading instructions, right?) and the foil soon ended up in the bin.

If given a choice between the two, for the same price, the calendar easily wins and has already had two other PlayPennies converts.

Wallace & Gromit: A Matter Of Loaf And Death £3 @ Tesco Entertainment

Wallace & Gromit: A Matter Of Loaf And Death £3 @ Tesco Entertainment

Who doesn’t love this delightful duo? I adore them and the words “More cheeeeeese Gromit” have been known to hang about in our house for days after Christmas. Well, now you can own this fabulous adventure for a mere £3 from Tesco Entertainment.

The storyline is pure comic genius. Wallace and Gromit’s new bakery business faces danger when a mysterious killer starts targeting all the bakers in town. Wallace doesn’t care because his head and heart have been swept away by Piella Bakewell, the former star of the Bake-O-Lite bread commercials.

Poor Gromit is, as usual, left to figure out the problems, save Wallace (and everybody else) all by himself. Fortunately he’s smart enough to take on this monumental task and successfully figure out who the dastardly killer is.

You’ll laugh, cringe, giggle and point your way through this fabulous movie. And if you’re not craving cheese and biscuits and freshly baked bread by the end of it, then I’ll eat my socks. Oh, and for those of you who still haven't sorted out your Father's Day presents, well, this one is a good un.

The IT Crowd Box Set Series 1-3 DVD £11.93 @ Asda Ent.Right, it's nine o'clock; the kids are in bed, it's time to relax, unwind and thank your lucky stars you don't work in an IT department

Being a bit of a tech' bod, the IT Crowd amuses me greatly - not in a huge laugh-out-loud kind of way but more of a knowing-chuckle kind of way.

If you work an in IT department this will either make you giggle and smirk all the way through or it will just feel like you're still at work and NOT. BE. FUNNY!

If you don't have anything to do with IT then welcome to the underclass that is the tech' department whose staff members lurk in the darkest corners of all modern office buildings.  Within these DVDs you'll find out what goes on behind those closed doors and after you've been asked, "Are you sure your monitor is switched on...?"

The IT Crowd Box Set Series 1-3 DVD £11.93 @ Asda Ent.If you liked Father Ted and The Office then you'll like the IT Crowd, and talking of fathers....yep, that's right this would make an inexpensive Father's Day gift because £11.93 for the first three series is a bit of a bargain, especially when it should be £29.35.

There's no delivery to pay to have this delivered within the UK either, but if you want it for Father's Day I suggest you order it NOW and if you don't...well, the you can order it whenever you fancy.

Mention Dr Who to me and I think of two things - 1) being at my nan's on a Saturday afternoon, lying on the floor in front of the TV and watching the latest episode with my cousins and 2) the immediate discussion that ensues at PlayPennies HQ as to who is the best AND the best-looking Dr Who (David Tennant is still winning).

Doctor Who: Complete Series 1 - 4 Box Set £41.85 @ ZavviThey say that, like James Bond, your first Dr Who is your favourite - this would be Tom Baker for me and whilst his voice is great, I'm afraid David Tennant wins my vote for favourite.

PES 2010: Pro Evolution Soccer £17.95 @ Zavvi

PES 2010: Pro Evolution Soccer £17.95 @ Zavvi

If you have a PS3 at home then chances are the Dad in your house likes uninterrupted time in front of it. Well, this Father’s Day you can offer him the entire day off and a fab game to boot. Just perfect for World Cup madness, here is the Pro Evolution series for 2010 for only £17.95 at Zavvi.

I don’t know much about football, I’m afraid. I had to get someone to explain to me how the World Cup works for crying out loud. So, I can only say that many men that I know, who love the game and gaming, have said that the Pro Evolution series of football games is one of the best.

The latest game has undergone a major visual overhaul with the famous players even more realistically rendered. It also includes new animation and moves, intuitive zonal defending that challenges players to find new ways to attack, and plenty more.

You can watch a trailer of the game on Zavvi so, if you’re not sure whether or not this is the right Father’s Day present for the Dad in your house, play it loudly and watch his reaction. An avid stare with some drooling likely means a yes.

Victorinox Penknifr Huntsman £12.99 @ 7DayShop.com

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 16 June, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Victorinox Penknifr Huntsman £12.99 @ 7DayShop.comMen adore gadgets. Women do too, obviously, but this week is all about Father’s Day and this particular gadget is a lovely little extra to slip into the Father’s Day present pile. If the Leatherman we discovered last week is a little out of your price range, then this chap at £12.99 including free delivery should fit the bill nicely.

This 91mm long penknife has four layers and 15 tools. It includes two blades, one large and one small, a corkscrew, a can opener, a small screwdriver (3mm that fits Philips screws), a cap lifter, a 6mm screwdriver, a wire stripper, a reamer punch, a key ring, tweezers, a toothpick, scissors, a multi-purpose hook and a wood saw.

Pant pant pant.

Victorinox Penknifr Huntsman £12.99 @ 7DayShop.comYes, also paused on ‘wood saw’. I’m not entirely sure how long it would take you to escape from the confines of the prison that the evil general has locked you in while you were in the pursuit of buried Egyptian treasure, but at least you stand a fighting chance with this woodsaw. If they let you keep the penknife, obviously.

It’s a nifty Father’s Day present this one...

The Scent Of Father’s Day @ The Perfume Shop

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 16 June, 2010 at 3:00 pm

The Scent Of Father’s Day @ The Perfume ShopIs the Dad in your life still sticking to only one aftershave? Does he wear none at all? Would you like him to smell so yummy that you can’t get your nose out of his arm? Well, this is your chance to nab some discounted manly fragrances from the Perfume Shop as delectable Father’s Day presents.

Dad’s are notoriously difficult to buy things for. They are! They either want things that are so far out of the budget as to be impossible dreams (Lamborghini’s/sports cars/Mediterranean holidays) or they unhelpfully tell us that they don’t need anything at all. So they get socks. And ties. And mugs.

So avoid the drama and just nab him any one of these scents and make him go, “Ooooh.” Paco Rabanne 1 Million may look horrendous but it’s down to £34 and smells dreamy. Diesel Only The Brave  (£27.99) offers up an equally pretentious design but it is absolutely delicious (check out our review here). The Scent Of Father’s Day @ The Perfume Shop

Other options include Le Male from Jean Paul Gaultier, Hugo Boss, Armani Code and Chanel Allure Homme Sport are all brilliant too. You can also choose from Christian Dior Fahrenheit, Dolce & Gabbana The One, Ed Hardy Hearts and Daggers (a good one just for the cool name) and Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme Sport.

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day Present

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 16 June, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day Present

This is it! This is the perfect Fathers day present! I know, I know, I’ve probably said that before. But this time I really do mean it. The problem with just buying something is that it lacks that truly personal touch. And what Father’s day is all about is showing how much the kids appreciate their dad. Making a gift, and an edible one at that, says it all.

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day PresentWhat caught my eye with Yummy Dough from Maps Toys is that it can in fact work both ways – to make something to give to dad, and maybe later, as an activity that dad can have fun doing with the kids.

Here’s how it works. Yummy Dough is, according to Maps Toys, like Play Dough. You can mould it and create all sorts of models with it, just like you would do with Play Dough from a tub. There are two differences though. Yummy Dough comes in powder – you add water to make it into the dough.

The second difference, and this is the really crucial one, is that you can then bake your creation in the oven and eat it. It is cookie dough you can play with. Woo hoo!

What does it taste like? Well according to our young testers, like a cross between a biscuit and popcorn. Sounds yummy to me. We gave a pack to PlayPennies mum Nickie, and she in turn unleashed three 11 year olds on it to try the dough out.

Powder and Water

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day PresentMum Nickie chose three 11-year old boys who “are known for their honesty - I also made sure they washed their hands.  Twice”.

As Nickie explains, the dough arrives in powder form and has to be mixed with a precise amount of water to create the dough. This is a good bit of science in action in the home! “The supplied syringe is a fantastic thought” she says “although now it resides in the cupboard with the water shooters for the next sunny day!!! The boys were fascinated by the scientific aspect of the powder/water/dough and getting the right consistency.”

According to Maps Toys, the aim of Yummy Dough is to help develop skills in young children including hand-eye co-ordination, motor skills, colour recognition, and food preparation.

The dough comes in four different colours: pink, green, yellow and blue. Nickie’s testers agreed that the first three smelt like strawberry, mint and vanilla respectively. But disagreed over the blue – this was either grape or blueberries! Kind of reminds me of the Simpson’s episode where Homer justifies the health benefits of jam filled doughnuts as the jam was purple, and purple is a fruit!

Shape it up!

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day PresentEven if there’s disagreement about the flavour, at least everyone agreed the end result tasted good. But how was it to use? Is it really like moulding models with play dough?

The dough took a while to manipulate but does make a very smooth Play-Doh-like dough but it doesn't roll out very well.” Nickie says. “Also, you have to keep working the dough and it does stick to your hands a little.” The equipment supplied in the kit only assumes a single child too, surprising in these days where three children in a family seems to be the norm!

They used some plastic spoons and knives that I have as there is only one knife supplied with the kit. They put their finished items onto a baking tray and put it into the oven. Because of their age they were capable of putting the tray in and out the oven themselves (with supervision).” Nicki explained.

Fantastic creations

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day PresentThe selling point of this product is its modelling dough-like qualities. So left to themselves, what fantastic creations did three 11 year old boys come up with?

They made, amongst other things, a clock, a flower, a multicoloured football, an eye, cubes and sat next to the cooker whilst it was baking (I have no idea what they were expecting to happen).” Said Nickie.

Having made the items in advance of Father’s day for the purposes of this review, the dad’s got a special early treat this year. They were all quite impressed with the effort put in. “It’s just nice to get something different, and I’m always happy to eat biscuits! I think this would be a really nice way to start off Father’s Day. Am looking forward to seeing what he’s going to make for Sunday!” was the response of one dad.

Fun with the kids

Review: Yummy Dough, The Edible Father's Day PresentAs an activity for parents to enjoy doing with their children it gets the thumbs up from Nickie. Her husband is also looking forward to having a go. Although as Nickie points out “guess who was left with the washing up?  We used four different bowls to mix the four different doughs but as the product is water-based it washes off the utensils, the bowls and the cutting boards (used to protect our table) really easily.”

Overall though, it was a good experience. “I would definitely buy this item again” says Nickie, “and one of the boys has said that he would be asking his mum to get him a kit when he sees it in the shops”.

And finally

Yummy Dough can be eaten raw or baked. It is made in Germany under strict European safety guidelines. The cheapest place we found selling Yummy Dough was £7.50 at the Geekest Link. Alternative stockists include Firebox where it costs £7.99 and Play.com where it is £9.49 but delivery is free.

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 15 June, 2010 at 3:00 pm

BOSCH GSR14.4-2V 14.4V DRILL DRIVER £80 @ Anglia Tool CentreStill stuck for the ideal Father's Day present? Personally when it comes to my idea of a great present for any occasion, nothing beats power tools! And my absolute favourites are Bosch drills. Luckily my other half is partial to them too. At the moment though he's only got one of the green DIY versions that Bosch make. He's going to be thrilled when he opens his father's day present and finds a Blue Professional version of his favourite brand. This BOSCH GSR14.4-2V 14.4V Drill Driver is on sale for £80, including delivery, at the Anglia Tool Centre. Plus, you get a 30 piece bitset!

The Bosch GSR14.4-2V 14.4V Compact Drill Driver comes supplied with two x 1.5ah Ni-Cad 30pc bitset. According to the manufacturer, it has a high torque of up to 70Nm "thanks to the Bosch high-performance motor". Bosch also claim a long service life, due ot the two speed "planetary gears with solid metal planetary gears". To be honest I've no idea what that means, but I've used my brother's blue Bosch drill many times and it is just fantastically powerful. Plus he's had it for 15 years now, so they must be doing something right! This Bosch drill is said to remain fully functional even after a 2-m drop onto concrete thanks to the "Dura-Shield" housing.

BOSCH GSR14.4-2V 14.4V DRILL DRIVER £80 @ Anglia Tool CentreSo if you're still looking for a grown up toy to get the man in your life this Father's Day (Sunday 20th June!) then this could be just the ticket. But also worth keeping in mind for the women in your life too! Some of us love power tools even more than guys do.

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s Day

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s Day

What could be a better Father’s Day present than a chance for Dad to spend some quality time with his kids? Well, the Splash About range of swimming equipment for children learning to swim are a fantastic way of getting them into the pool, and Dad into the (ahem) swim of things.

PlayPennies were sent two sets of Splash About swimming products to put through our usual rigorous testing procedures. We sent them across to Adam and Kev (husband to our very own Nickie ), our two resident Dads for them to try out. The each got a different kit - Adam the Water Buddies set for older children, and Kev the Happy Nappy kit for the littler ones.

But first, some fascinating facts about swimming with children...

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s DayA recent survey showed that 23.4 percent of men who took their children swimming were more likely to feel an increased connection with their baby than the 19.7 percent of mums.

Plus, fathers were more likely to feel more confident with their parenting skills after teaching their children to swim. So, in light of these fascinating facts it’s clear that teaching a child to swim is good for Dad.

Actually, swimming with children and babies is very good for everyone all round. Babies love the warmth and the sensation of lightness and it has massive benefits for co-ordination, confidence and health. Swimming promotes balance, strength, stamina and overall fitness and children (especially babies) that swim are more likely to sleep better at night.

Babies spend their first nine months of life surrounded by water - they have affinity for it and feel secure and happy in its embrace. Introducing your baby to swimming from a tender age is not as strange as you may think and actually delivers tangible benefits.

Children under six months old have some incredible built-in reflexes that protect them in water. One of these, the dive reflex, has baby automatically block his throat when under water so that he cannot swallow water.Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s Day

You may have seen photographs of babies with open mouths submerged beneath the water – well those babies’ dive reflex has kicked in and their throats are completely sealed. Like many of the other reflexes exhibited by babies to protect them in their most vulnerable years, this one is pretty amazing.

Tactile and visual cues are an essential part of a child’s development. The regular use of touch helps a child to feel secure and loved, especially when accompanied by eye contact. Swimming gives you and your baby a chance to spend some quality time together in a relaxing environment that actively promotes holding each other, and looking into one another’s eyes.

During the course of your lessons there will be plenty of eye and skin contact and this really does help to build on the parental bonding process.  If you have more than one child then this is a fabulous way of getting to spend some unique one-on-one bonding time with your newborn. The two of you can luxuriate in uninterrupted eye contact and cuddles.

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s Day

According to some research there are even a few neurological advantages to baby swimming. These include faster language and social development. Although the latter can be as easily improved through other extramural activities, they are an added extra to slot onto the list of benefits offered by teaching your child to swim.

If you’re reading this and you’re the proud owner of an older child, perhaps even a preschooler, that hasn’t been introduced to the water yet, don’t despair. There are lessons for children of all ages and abilities and you’ve done absolutely no lasting damage at all. Yes, you may find that they are reluctant to climb into the pool and may even cry in fear.

Just remember that  you would also be daunted if someone bunged you into an enormous vat of water without any clue on what you’re supposed to be doing once you’re in it. However, don’t give up at the first hurdle. There are plenty of preschoolers that have overcome their fear of water and are now happy swim babes.

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s Day

There are a few things you do need to consider before you gallop on over to your nearest leisure centre swimming pool though. Ensure that, if you do go for classes, your teachers are fully qualified with either the STA or ASA, monitor your baby’s temperature and make sure they don’t get cold (at least 31 degrees Celsius is comfortable for babies) and don’t stay in the water for too long.

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s DayWell, after that long list of research and general praise for the wonders of teaching a child to swim, I bet you’re wondering about the actual products we got in for review.

The Water Buddies floatsuit that arrived was in lurid pink and rather terrifying,” said Adam, Dad to Caitlin, “However, my daughter fell in love at first sight and insisted we put it on straight away. It was pretty difficult to get her into it because it’s all one unit and the material is quite sticky, as it should be, but once it was on she was very comfortable.”

Adam took Caitlin swimming the next day and followed the instructions on the pamphlet closely.

The instructions tell you to remove several floats from the costume before putting the child into the pool,” he said, “Then, once they are in the water, you add or subtract these until your child is happily balanced and floating. This was easier said than done. My daughter is still quite nervous in the water so I had no chance of seeing if she could float after each addition.”

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s DayThe Water Buddies floatsuit comes with sun protection with extra cover around the neck, back and chest with short sleeves and legs built into the suit. Offering a protection of SPF 50+ and easily modified to suit different levels of swimming ability, they are a very clever idea.

I liked the fact that my daughter could run into the sea and she was protected from the sun all the time,” said Adam, “Plus I think the suit really added to her self confidence because she used to need a good ten to fifteen minutes of clinging to me in the water before she was brave enough to go it alone. Now she won’t let me near her at all and confidently swims all over the place. It’s fantastic to see.”

Kev and Annie received the Happy Nappy System which is made from supple, stretchy neoprene and is finished with soft, snug, deep bands of fabric with a high rubber content to stop leakage.

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s DayThe NappyWrap included is a soft, white cotton nappy wrap that is held in place by Velcro and can be accompanied by the Nappy Liners in supersoft and biodegradable fabric. These are designed to hold solids and can be used in conjunction with the normal nappies and in water.

Annie is 18 months old and she loved the bright pink colour of her Happy Nappy,” said Kev, “It was a bit like a wetsuit with elasticated waist and leg cuffs. It was a very snug fit and we experienced no leaks at all.”

Both Dads said that they thoroughly enjoyed the suits, even if they were tricky to put on initially. The kids also loved wearing them and Caitlin told her Dad that she really liked how it kept her feeling warm and safe while she was in the water.

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s DayIn terms of washing these critters, all the mums were a bit worried. The colours are extremely bright and we were all thinking of lurid pink laundry and colour runs. However, the opposite is true. After the fairly exhaustive process of removing all the floats, these suits washed up brilliantly with no sign of a dye or a bleed anywhere on the accompanying washing.

It washes really well,” said Kev, “There was no colour leakage at all, although we did wash it with towels the first time to be on the safe side.”

And Finally

The Water Buddies range caters for children from one to six years old and comes in three different flavours – Short John Floatsuits, Sun Protection Floatsuits and Designer Floatsuits – and the prices start from around £19.99.

We thought the price was quite high at first,” said Adam, “Then we started using it and it is worth every penny. We even go swimming more often because it really has given my daughter more confidence in the water. Just for that fact alone I would pay twice this amount.”

Review: Splashy Fun For Father’s Day

The Happy Nappy costs £8.35 with the extra costs of £4.99 for the NappyWrap and £1.99 for a pack of 25 Nappy Liners. “We would definitely use this product again,” said Kev.

And for those of you who are desperate to get one of these kits now, Splash About have got some fab special offers running at the moment.
