Mega Bloks Play N Go Table £17.49 @ Mothercare

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 23 May, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Mega Bloks Play N Go Table £17.49 @ Mothercare

This is a pretty cool deal right here. Mothercare have reduced the price on the Mega Bloks table from £34.99 to £17.49 which means you are saving exactly 1p over half the original price. Ha! Tasty…

The Mega Bloks Play N Go table is ideal for little ones to get stuck in with those fun bloks and to build worlds, and realms of imagination in comfort. It can be taken anywhere you go as it is easily portable and can be folded up neatly for easy storage. These are two great selling points right there!

The Mega Bloks Play N Go table is a building platform that comes with plenty of different bloks and accessories so kids will have hours of building fun, and you don’t have to fork out even more cash on Mega Bloks so as to make the table worth your while.

You will have to pay £4.95 (ouch!) if you want home delivery, or you can arrange to collect yours instore.

National Geographic Mobile £7.50 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 18 May, 2012 at 4:00 pm

National Geographic Mobile £7.50 @ Amazon

The National Geographic space mobile is down from £29.99 to £7.50 on Amazon at the moment. It comes with their free super saver delivery and you are saving £22.49 off this fun toy.

The National Geographic space mobile brings the history of space exploration to life in your bedroom. The mobile is wonderfully detailed and offers a lovely visual introduction to space flight, which can only be cool, right?

The remote control allows you to light up Earth and start the spaceships orbiting and the National Geographic space mobile also includes models of famous craft such as the space shuttle, international space station and the Apollo Command.

The mobile has eight vehicles, 360 degree rotation, auto shut off, light up planet and needs you to give it four AA and two AAA batteries to make it work, and these are not included in the price. I would not have paid nearly £30 for this, but for under a tenner, it’s a great deal.

Playmobile 5873 Fairytale Castle £13.99 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 14 May, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Playmobile 5873 Fairytale Castle £13.99 @ Argos

This is such a good deal that I’m struggling not to buy it. Seriously. This is an ideal addition to the Present Cupboard as it is a huge toy with loads of extras that has been reduced to well over 50% of the original price. It used to sell for £39.99 but Argos have it at £13.99 and you can arrange to collect it instore for free.

The Playmobil Fairytale Castle comes with three multicoloured unicorns which are there to be cared for by the fairy queen and princess. These two figures are also included in the set along with a bunch of cool accessories too.

The set is apparently good for helping to develop your child’s motor skills, helps with their social and emotional development, improves their hand-eye co-ordination and encourages creativity. I think that this reduced price is utterly fantastic but have to confess to finding the Playmobil toys silly small and always prone to appearing under bare feet.

Choose The Perfect Children’s Bank Account

Choose The Perfect Children’s Bank Account

The one thing that I battled with as a child was saving money. I was terrible at it, no matter how hard my parents tried to teach me the basics I was having none of it. My brother, on the other hand, was brilliant. He’d wait for months and months to buy the perfect toy. And today he has an excellent grasp of finance that has taken me much longer to perfect.

The point of my story is that it is extremely important to teach children about money from a very young age. As toddlers and preschoolers they can count it and play with it to get used to it and to learn the various values, but as they approach the age of seven, it’s a good idea to sort out pocket money and bank accounts.

There are quite a few options open to parents who want to get their kids a bank account and I’ve gone out to find which ones offer what rates so you can make an informed choice.

Mega Bloks 3-In-1 Build N Go Walker £12.44 @ Amazon

Mega Bloks 3-In-1 Build N Go Walker £12.44 @ Amazon

Amazon has plonked another rather tasty deal onto our laps today with this Mega Bloks three in one build and go walker dude. Down from £24.99 to only £12.44 you are saving £12.55 and over half the original price, and it comes with free delivery.

The Mega Bloks three in one build and go walker has quite a mouthful of a name but it looks rather fun. It is the first walker that allows kids to learn how to walk while also helping them to build their creativity by encouraging them to design and build their walker by themselves.

The Mega Bloks walker comes with a removable building plate and your child can either push their builds around or play with their blocks separately. The entire toy will also fold down into a more practical size so that it can easily be stored, and it has a handle so you can take it with you easily too. Nice.

Scrabble Trickster £11.28 @ Amazon

Scrabble Trickster £11.28 @ Amazon

Amazon has reduced the price of the Scrabble Trickster game from £21.99 to £11.28 which is a saving of £10.71 off the original price. This is a pretty good deal actually, and it comes with their tasty Super Saver Delivery of course!

Whether you are a Scrabble newcomer or an expert you can get a whole new experience out of playing Scrabble Trickster. There are trick cards that level the playing field by breaking the rules of Scrabble, you can even steal your opponent’s high score or make them lose their turn.

In this twist on the classic word game, Scrabble players use their seven drawn letter tiles to form words on the game board as usual but, and this is a big but, you can now add in things like proper names or celebrity names, or write the words backwords, or just plonk the words down in the middle of the board without linking them to other words.

This will either enchant you or horrify you but the deal is spot on. So…which are you? Scrabble purist or Scrabble fun?

Moshi Monsters Review

by Tamsin Oxford in Reviews on 30 April, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Moshi Monsters Review

There are a lot of toys, stickers, cards and books that have the Moshi Monsters label on them and they are proving as popular as the original website that spawned them. But we haven’t done a review of the website itself, and here it is.

I found the Moshi Monsters site purely by accident last year and thought that the idea behind it was perfect for my daughter. She was four at the time, and still learning to read, write and handle basic maths. The site captured her attention immediately but, at first, needed my constant participation as she struggled with mouse control and, obviously, reading the various instructions on the site.

One thing I realised early on was that the site was pretty empty without the paid-for subscription. I looked into the prices and realised that it was worth trying out for at least a month. You pay £4.95 for one month, £23.95 for six months, and £29.95 for 12 months. The latter is, obviously, the best deal and one that I have now opted for.

The reason I now have a yearly Moshi Monster membership is because the site works. I allow my daughter a maximum of an hour a day on the website and she has learned how to: handle a mouse and keyboard deftly, basic general knowledge that even I don’t know, spelling, reading, maths and problem solving. I can honestly say that the Moshi Monsters website and its Super Moshi missions have gone a long way towards encouraging my daughter to learn.

I think one of the reasons she is so good at reading now, six months later age 5, is because she was sick and tired of waiting on me in order to do her various games on the site! Great value for money, well designed, extremely funny for adults as well (Simon Growl anyone?), and has educational merit.

Kids Freebie: Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know @ Amazon

Kids Freebie: Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know @ Amazon

This is an excellent freebie and one that I have snapped up faster than you can say, “Oh, look, a fabulous freebie!”. This book has been reduced from £7.50 to, well, zero, zip, nada, nothing. And delivery is free thanks to the wonders of the Kindle and Whispernet - yeah, sorry non-Kindle owners, this is for the Kindle.

The book has great reviews on Amazon with adults saying that it was fun to delve back into the world of fairy tales and mad magic and weird and gruesome tales. I know that I’ve felt as if I have neglected my daughter’s fairytale education with us focusing more on educational books so this is a lovely idea.

It captures books from all different fairytale cultures and puts them all into one simple volume for you and the kids to enjoy. Sit together under a blankie with some hot chocolate and read these adventures together, it’s a lovely way to spend some quality time with each other too.

Kids Freebie: Free Colouring Pages @ Kids-N-Fun

Kids Freebie: Free Colouring Pages @ Kids-N-Fun

Kids-n-fun.com is a site that has loads of colouring in and activities for kids. These are all free and include things like funky colouring pages, craft ideas and activities, and wallpapers. There are more than 3000 colouring pages on the site for you to save and print for free.

You can find colouring pages on almost every subject and theme and the handy search bar at the top of the screen will help you to narrow down your choices. You can print the image by choosing pring on the file menu of the browser, or you can right-click the image and click Print picture or save as.

They have 101 Dalmations pages, winter pages, Christmas, Easter, 64 Zoo Lane, and loads more. Although my daughter was gutted when we realised that there is a listing for Scooby Doo but that there are no free colouring in pages associated with it. AH well, she was satisfied with some Aladdin and Kung Fu Panda, so all is well.

Large Wheelybug £40.12 @ Tesco Direct

Large Wheelybug £40.12 @ Tesco Direct

The Wheelybugs on sale at Tesco Direct are down from £65 to £40.12 at the moment. You can choose from various designs and you are saving around £15 off the original price as well! If you have a Tesco nearby, then you can arrange to collect yours instore to save on delivery charges.

The different Wheelbugs on sale at Tesco include the Tiger, Ladybird, Bee, Piggy, Mouse and Cow. I have to admit that my favourite is the Tiger really. Those cute little fluffy ears are too much! Also, you can’t really see the faces of the Ladybird, Bee and Cow which makes them look a tad creepy.

The Wheelybugs are ideal for toddlers aged 1-2 years old and let them roam the home safely and easily. They have been designed for children learning motor skills and can be ridden, pushed and pulled along thanks to the multi-directional castors. The Wheelybugs are handmade and are easy to keep clean too. There are also two different age range indicators on the site. One says 1-2 and the other says 2+, not sure which one is right!

Up To 50% Off HappyLand @ Mothercare

Up To 50% Off HappyLand @ Mothercare

Is it HappyLand sale month? Last week I found an ace deal which had a bunch of HappyLand products on sale at Amazon, now Mothercare is selling up to 50% off on their range of HappyLand products too! If you have a tot in the right age group for these toys, then you are one lucky parent!

There are three pages of HappyLand items included in the sale so you are definitely spoiled for choice. These range from things like the HappyLand Flying set which is down to £6 from £12, the HappyLand Police Station down to £8 from £16, and the HappyLand Retro Racers set that is down to £6 from £12.

The bigger sets, such as HappyLand Martian Moon Set, are not as heavily reduced as the smaller things I’ve noticed. The latter only drops by £8, while the others are almost 50% off. However, if you spend some time searching, you can get pretty much an entire set and play area for substantially less than normal.

Early Learning Centre Shape Sorting Bus £7.99 @ Argos

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 20 April, 2012 at 8:00 am

Early Learning Centre Shape Sorting Bus £7.99 @ ArgosShape sorting. It seems like this is one of every baby's favourite passtimes. I used to find it rather soothing to do myself. There's something very satisfying about putting the right shape in the right hole. This Early Learning Centre Shape Sorting Bus toy has been reduced to half price by Argos. Down from £16 to £7.99.

Suitable for children aged six months and upwards, this big friendly red bus from the Early Learning Centre has 6 activity blocks with rattles, mirror and beads inside to keep baby entertained during play. Your little one can push the shaped blocks into the roof slots, or stack them on the sides of the bus for never-ending fun and curiosity.

This sort of toy helps a child's hand to eye co-ordination, visual development and sound awareness. Although to be honest, it is hard to find any activity at this age that doesn't seem to do exactly that. My son loved stacking all my saucepans, and banging them about to make noise!

The toy's dimensions in its packaging measure 27cm high, 28.8cm wide and 16.2cm deep.

Ten Favourite Books For Boys £9.99 @ The Works

Ten Favourite Books For Boys £9.99 @ The Works

The Works has reduced the price of this ten book set from £46.90 to £9.99. There are a bunch of books that offer adventure, fun and plenty of excitement for a very, very low price. Only a few remain in stock so grab it while you can.

I object hugely to gender typing books. I don’t think books should be allocated a gender and that girls should think that this set of books is not for them. Titles such as Sir Gadabout Goes to School or Not Yeti, The Boy with Lightning Feet are as easily enjoyed by the feminine persuasion as by the masculine.

You will also find Horrid Henry’s Jolly Joke Book, The Empty Suit of Armour, The Bogey Men and the Trolls Next Door, and The Boy with the Magic Numbers as well as other fun titles to read and enjoy. You will also have to pay £2.99 for delivery I’m afraid.

Richard Hammond’s Blast Lab £6.99 @ Play.com

Play has reduced the Richard Hammond’s Blast Lab Phantastic Phun kit from £14.99 to £6.99 which is a nice saving of half the original price. This would make a superb birthday present or addition to the Present Cupboard for this Christmas.

The Phantastic Phun blast lab has loads of interesting experiments testing for household acids and bases. You get your own pH indicator papers and a scale to help you on your experimental way, along with plenty of other extras and bits and pieces too.

You can make egg shells disappear, clean coins, make a volcano and there is even a recipe for making green eggs (don’t forget to nab some ham so you can make that lovely Dr Seuss breakfast…) All of the activities are described in the instruction manual so you do have help along the way.

There isn’t a lot of information as to what exactly is included in the kit but it does look like enormous fun. And the Messy Mess kit is also on sale if you prefer.

The Petite Harumika Review

by Tamsin Oxford in Reviews on 29 March, 2012 at 5:00 pm

The Petite Harumika Review

Last year I reviewed the awesome Harumika range of toys that are brilliant for encouraging creativity and independent play. My daughter really enjoyed the kit but it soon lost most of the pieces and slipped away, forgotten, in a drawer.

Then the Petite Harumika kit arrived and she fell in love all over again. And this time the passion hasn’t faded. It is almost as if the tiny version is more appealing to her five year old senses.

Harumika is aimed at girls and is very popular with budding fashionistas who like to make, remake and make all sorts of different designs. There is no sewing needed as the miniature dress form – the doll, if you will – has a slot down the back into which the fabric is pressed to hold it in place.

The Petite Harumika kit comes with a 7cm miniature dress form on a key chain (this has been hung proudly from my daughter’s backpack on more than one shopping excursion), a stylus tool for slotting the fabric into the back, one piece of material, four accents, and a sheet of gem stickers.

What I really like about this kit is that the stickers are fairly robust. You can restick them several times before they start to lose their grip so you can create a wide range of looks before they give up the ghost. My daughter has shown me some sterling creations that honestly amazed me, and continues to spend happy hours pootling around with the fabric.

Of course, the fabric and stickers from the larger Harumika kit have been added to create some impressive ballgowns too. For £7.99, I think that the Petite Harumika kit is expensive so it would be a special treat or present rather than a fun, impulse buy. However, it is robust, re-usable, fun, and very sweet indeed.
