Buying A Baby Buggy: What You Really Need To Know

by Lynley Oram in Features on 20 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Buying A Baby Buggy: What You Really Need To KnowA baby buggy, pushchair, stroller, pram. We give the device used to push little tiny people around a lot of different name. Some are not universal, as I found when I was in Canada, where they thought it was awfully cute that I called it a pram.

The thing is, when you're a first time mum, it is really hard to decide what it is you actually need. First off, what you don't want to get is a stroller. These are sometimes called a pushchair as well. But confusingly, I've also seen prams or buggies called pushchairs too.

A stroller is a mode of transportation suited to much older babies and toddlers. Definitely not for newborns.

Now that we've got that struck off the list, you're basically left with three types of buggy to choose from. Read on to find out what they are, and whether they're any use for you. Start from the beginning as some of the features you'll need to take into consideration are the same for some or all pushchairs.

Rockie Layback Buggy £15 @ Tesco

Rockie Layback Buggy £15 @ Tesco

There’s a whopping £45 off the Rockie Layback Buggy (and £30 off the red Lola Buggy, which comes with a raincover) at Tesco.

While I prefer babywearing or pushing my daughter in her Smart Trike, we’re flying off to visit family  for the summer soon, and my parents can’t carry my daughter. I also don’t think the airline will take a Smart Trike, for some reason.

Of course, you don’t want to spend a fortune on a pram that’s main purpose  is to be bashed around on conveyer belts, so this Rockie Layback is a great buy.

It’s a leightweight stroller, weighing in at a little over 6.5kg and it has plastic foam wheels, a comfortable handle grip and back brakes.

The Rockie stroller features a double layer, 3-position adjustable seat and lie flat option for when baby needs to sleep. There’s an integrated hood, a large shopping basket and a full length raincover included.

Suitable from birth and encompassing a five-point harness, this seems like a great little buy, especially if you’re jetting off somewhere soon!

Hauck Citi Jogger Buggy Review

Hauck Citi Jogger Buggy Review

This looked like a good buggy for the budget conscious. The Hauck Citi Jogger can be bought online from various stockists. You'll find a list on the the website. One place to buy the buggy online is at Parent Supermarket, where it is priced at £79.99. That's a reduction of twenty quid on the RRP of £99.99.

PlayPennies mum Lucy, mum to an 18 month old with number two on the way, agreed to give this buggy a good test out.  As she's had 18 months of using her old buggy/travel system to compare the new one against, the buggy was in for a thorough review.

My Child X5 Pushchair Oriental Fire @ Kiddicare.com

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 15 May, 2010 at 2:00 pm

My Child X5 Pushchair Oriental Fire @ Kiddicare.comI had two main requirements when shopping for a stroller. It had to be affordable, as by then nursery costs were sucking up all our spare cash, and it had to be red. Or rather, it had to be a bright colour. I’ve never understood why people opt for dark blues, quiet greys and dull browns. I want a colour that even the most myopic of driver can see as we walk across a zebra crossing thank you very much! The My Child X5 Pushchair would have ticked both those boxes.

My Child X5 Pushchair Oriental Fire @ Kiddicare.comThis stroller has a recommended retail price of £132, but is available at Kiddiecare.com for £49.99. It comes with a sun roof and, crucial for the UK, a rain cover. The version featured in this sale is the Oriental Fire – a very visible, bright red. There’s lots of reviews from mainly happy customers on the site. The only recurring criticism was that the footrest is a little bit too far back, which seems to be difficult for some children to use. If you’re after a little bit of sun safety, the site also has My Child UV parasols on special offer, for £9.99. A good price, but there doesn’t seem to be any in red, which is a shame.
