10 Horrible Histories Books £9.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 2:00 pm

10 Horrible Histories Books £9.99 @ The Book PeopleThe Book People are selling 10 Horrible Histories books for £9.99, they're full list price is £59.90.

I've written about these Horrible Histories books before; I keep seeing trailers on TV for a Dan Snow series on BBC Knowledge about the major cities in the world and how filthy they were 'way back when' which made me come and look for Horrible Histories again.

The 10 Horrible Histories books were on sale for £9.99 the first time I wrote about them too (maybe they're always £9.99 from The Book People!) and if you've not come across them before, you're in for a treat!

Essentially, Horrible Histories are historical accounts with the gross, gory, slimy, smelly and disgusting bits left IN - just the sort of thing that kids love and will have them absolutely engrossed, never again will history be boring.

The titles which make up this set of 10 Horrible Histories set are:

  • Slimy Stuarts
  • Awesome Egyptians
  • Vile Victorians
  • Rotten Romans
  • Terrible Tudors
  • Vicious Vikings
  • Groovy Greeks
  • Woeful Second World War
  • Measly Middle Ages
  • Frightful First World War

If you're looking for ideas and something different to put into party bags, rather than the usual plastic tat, then you could buy a set of these Horrible Histories books, split them up and put a book in each bag.

Single item delivery will cost you an additional £1.95, unless you find something else that takes your fancy and brings your order total to £25 or more.

Happy being grossed out by history!

'Free' Ladybird Books @ Daily And Sunday Mirror

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

'Free' Ladybird Books @ Daily And Sunday MirrorThe Daily and Sunday Mirror newspaper are giving away 'free' Ladybird books from today until 26 February - there are up to 100 to choose from and you can bag yourself a maximum of 25 if you manage to collect the tokens every day.

Now I say 'free', rather than 'FREEEEE', because it's all going to depend on your point of view and whether or not you, or someone you know, already gets the Daily Mirror (shudder!) every day.

You need two tokens for each Ladybird book that you want and tokens will be printed in the Daily and Sunday Mirror newspapers - the Daily Mirror costs 40 pence on weekdays, 70 pence on a Saturday and the Sunday Mirror costs £1 (really?!  One of our great British pounds for that publication?! Wow...).

On top of the newspaper cost you need to pay for the postage of your Ladybird books - so they're not truly free, but you don't need to pay the full retail price for them.

One you've collected your tokens, just come back and click the link above to go to the 'Ladybird Library' page which has a link to an order form - just follow the instructions from there and wait for up to 12 weeks(!!) from 7 March for your books to arrive; I hope you didn't want them in a hurry.

One last thing - if you go and LIKE the Daily Mirror Facebook page then you can download a free audio copy of  The Gingerbread Man.

The Usborne Children’s World Atlas £1.99 @ Argos

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 3 February, 2012 at 3:00 pm

The Usborne Children’s World Atlas £1.99 @ Argos

I am frankly astonished by this deal. What a lovely bargain. This Usborne Children’s World Atlas is down from £8.99 to only £1.99 which is not only a whopping saving on the original price but also a really awesome book to have.

The Usborne Children’s World Atlas has internet links littered throughout the book. We bought the encyclopaedia version just after Christmas this year and it is really, really good. Each section comes with a bunch of internet links that show you even more videos, information, pictures and stories about the stuff on the page.

My daughter loves hers, she takes it with her when we go out and tells us all about the things inside it. We’re even learning things here! The book has 60 pages of maps along with introductions to the continents, satellite photography, and lots of facts about the various countries.

The Usborne Children’s World Atlas at this price is a complete and utter steal.

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 28 January, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Octonauts Little Library Book Set £2.24 @ Red House BooksYou can pick up an Octonauts Little Library Book Set for £2.24, rather than £4.99, from the lovely folks over at Red House Books.

I really like these pocket libraries - my youngest son still, at five-and-a-half like quickly flicking through his Bob the Builder Pocket Library books - they are perfect for titchy ones who are just beginning to get inquisitve about books and reading.

They come presented in a sturdy slip case so you can keep them all together. Each book is stong and chunky making the pages easy to turn, and perfect, for little hands to hold.

The pictures are bright and colourful, the number of words is just right making each book just the right length for young attention spans and features a different Octonaut character undertaking daring rescues and encountering underwater creatures.

The published price on the Red House website is £2.49 - use the following codes to drop the price to £2.24 and get free home delivery too: RHTEN and REDFREE.

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 27 January, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Magical Recipes Disney Princess And Winnie The Pooh £2.99 @ The Book People

The Book People may have the worst service ever but they do have lots and lots of lovely book bargains to enjoy. Today they are selling two books of magical recipes – Disney Princess and Winnie the Pooh – for £2.99 including delivery.

Each recipe book is just £2.99 and you can get free delivery using the code HELP11. These books are both hardcover so they can cope with being bashed about in the kitchen a bit and combine lovely stories with lovely recipes to make and enjoy together.

The cookbooks include recipes such as Belle’s Dainty Cupcakes or Pooh’s Yummy Honey Cakes (yum) and includes stories to make the baking move nice and smoothly. Children can also record their cooking successes and create their own recipes.

These books are great for teaching kids how to enjoy cooking and to be proud of what they have made so far. I am particularly impressed with the fact that they are wipe clean. Nice.

Stuck (Hardback Version) £5.49 @ Red House Books

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 26 January, 2012 at 10:00 am

Stuck (Hardback Version) £5.49 @ Red House BooksRed House Books are selling 'Stuck' by Oliver Jeffers, in hardback, for £5.49, rather than its list price of £10.99.

I love discovering new books and this is just one of those occasions - I've not come across Stuck, by Oliver Jeffers, before and it looks GREAT.

It tells the story of a little boy, Floyd, whose kite gets stuck in a tree.  He throws his shoe into the tree in a bid to knock his kite down, but his shoe gets stuck too!

So Floyd throws his other shoe in the tree, which just gets stuck along with the kite and his first thrown shoe, as does the ladder, the lorry and even a whale.

Stuck is described as a stunning picture book that's hilarious to read out loud, it's suitable for ages three and over although I'm sure younger children will adore listening to the tale of Floyd and his stuck kite.

I wish I had a free delivery code for you, although the cost of single item delivery is only £1.95.

RHS Grow Your Own For Kids Book £4.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 25 January, 2012 at 12:00 pm

RHS Grow Your Own For Kids Book £4.99 @ The Book PeopleIf you want to inspire your children to learn about food and how they can grow their own, then you should take a look at this RHS Grow Your Own For Kids book that's on sale with The Book People for £4.99 rather than £12.99.

You can't beat going out into the garden, picking food that you've grown yourself and then eating it - it tastes better than anything you can buy in the supermarket, is cheaper and provides a great sense of satisfaction too.

My granddad had the greenest fingers of anyone I know, he taught my mum how to grow things and she passed that love on to me when I was little - I had a little patch of garden all to myself and I grew quick-growing things in it, it was awesome.

Between the Royal Horticultural Society and Blue Peter's gardener Chris Collins (I remember when the Blue Peter gardener was Percy Thrower!) your young gardener will be shown everything from planting, growing and picking their own fruit and veg through to making a scarecrow - making your own scarecrow sounds like lots of fun to me.

Unless you're going to spend over £25 you'll have to pay a single item delivery charge of £1.95 - I wonder if there are instructions for growing a money tree in the RHS Grow Your Own For Kids book...?

Happy growing your own!

First Illustrated Maths Dictionary £3.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 24 January, 2012 at 11:00 am

First Illustrated Maths Dictionary £3.99 @ The Book PeopleThe Book People are selling this First Illustrated Maths Dictionary for £3.99, rather than its original list price of £9.99 - my maths skills tell me that's a £6 saving.

I'm one of the few people I know who openly admits to loving numbers!  I love sorting out my household budget, I love keeping tabs on investment performance, I love working out tax calculations (that makes sense I suppose, I did work for HMRC many years ago!) and I think it's a shame when people get utterly frozen when it comes to sums and anything numerical.

This First Illustrated Maths Dictionary looks just the job for building number confidence in youngsters and setting them on the path to mathematical greatness - okay, maybe not mathematical greatness (although you never know!) but at least they won't want to run for the hills or hide under the desk whenever it's time to start solving some maths problems.

It features bright and lively illustrations and contains details of websites that children can visit to practice their new-found maths skills; awesome!

If this is all you buy from The Book People today then a £1.95 single item delivery charge will apply.

Happy adding and subtracting!

Myths And Legends Book Collection (10 Books) £9.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 17 January, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Myths And Legends Book Collection (10 Books) £9.99 @ The Book PeopleWOW, The Book People have such a lot of fabulous books for fabulous prices - this Myths and Legends collection of 10 books are being sold for £9.99, rather than their list price of £60.90.

Ten great books for £9.99 - you really can't go wrong with that especially, as far as I'm concerned anyway, they're educational books that are FUN.

I love learning, but it's so much easier when learning's fun and entertaining - which is most definitely the case with this Myths and Legends book collection.

The official Book People blurb says,

Marcia Williams is a hugely talented author and illustrator with an incredible eye for detail and a gift for making quite challenging stories completely accessible to a young audience. Children who come in to contact with these books - The Iliad, The Odyssey and the Canterbury Tales to name just three - will enrich their understanding of literature and myth and grow up knowing and loving these powerful stories. With lovely, cartoon-style illustrations and plenty of humour throughout, these exceptional books are an absolute joy.

And the reviews from people who believed that blurb, have nothing to say that doesn't back it up...

"Beautifully illustrated in comic-book style. My children love these. Fantastic collection all housed in a sturdy slipcase."

"These books are as good a start as any to reading classic literature for people of all ages. As I don't have the time to read lots of literature these are useful paperbacks and I also like the humerous slant given to the stories. I've also read from last year's description of these books that they are faithful to the source material. So, what are you waiting for?"

Well there you are then - great books, for a great price, with great reviews. As the last review comment says, what are you waiting for?

 Happy myths and legends reading!

Human Body 3D Pop-Up Book £3 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 16 January, 2012 at 11:00 am

Human Body 3D Pop-Up Book £3 @ The Book PeopleThis Human Body 3D Pop-Up book is on sale with The Book People for £3 instead of its full list price of £12.99; awesome.

I'm currently studying anatomy which includes, in serious detail, muscle physiology and if you don't love it then, WOW, would it be heavy going what with sarcoplasm, mitochondrion and all those myofibrils!

Thankfully, this Human Body 3D pop-up book looks like it will be very informative and educational whilst being fun and engaging at the same time, because the information isn't contained in the book alone - your computer and webcam also come into play.

To quote the official blurb about the Human Body 3D pop-up book,

The incredible on-screen pop-ups allow children to get inside the body and see the way it works from all angles, while the detailed facts, stats and figures make this hardback a top learning experience

It sounds properly great to me - I think I might even buy one for myself to lighten up my anatomy revision!

A single item delivery charge of £1.95 will apply if this is all you order from The Book People - a small price to pay for such a great book, in my humble opinion.

Happy anatomy learning!

Thomas The Tank Engine Original Books Box Set £49.99 @ Choicesuk.com

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 16 January, 2012 at 9:00 am

Thomas The Tank Engine Original Books Box Set £49.99 @ Choicesuk.comThis Thomas the Tank Engine original books box set is up for grabs for £49.99 at Choicesuk.com - it's rrp is £150 and the average online price with the other usual suspects is around the £100 mark.

WOW Thomas is looking young and sparky for an old 'guy' - first published in 1946 the books in this Thomas the Tank Engine are copies of those original versions.  A friend of mine had some of these original stories when we were little and they were quite small size wise, the books in this Thomas the Tank Engine original box set are larger so will be much easier to read; hurrah!

The 'official' name for these books is the Thomas the Tank Engine Centenary Library set - I'm not sure where the centenary bit comes into play because Thomas isn't 100 years old (yet) and there aren't 100 books in the collection...most confusing!

What's not confusing is why children (boys and girls) love the little blue engine so much - he's cheeky, he's funny, the other characters are all so identifiable and everyone has their favourites and their 'baddies'.

Delivery is free when you order from Choicesuk.com so £49.99 is all you're going to spend when you buy your Thomas the Tank Engine original books box set.

Who, What, Where, Why Collection - 4 Books £4.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 14 January, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Who, What, Where, Why Collection - 4 Books £4.99 @ The Book PeopleI love books like this Who, What, Where, Why Collection - they're fun, they're informative and answer all the questions that kids love to ask or, never thought of asking but love the answers.

Books like this inspire, I think, an early love of learning and develop, I hope, a thirst for knowledge - with questions like: Who reads back-to-front? What is a dream? Why was football once banned? And where is the Twilight Zone?

The books are bright, the illustrations are zany and The Book People are selling them for £4.99, rather than their recommended list price of £23.96.

I'm not a huge fan of filling party bags with junk; I'd rather spend the same money on a few of these Who, What, Where and Why collections, split them up and send each child home with a book - working out at just £1.25 a book I think they make party bag bargains.

If this is the only thing you order from The Book People then you'll have to pay an additional £1.95 for delivery - free delivery doesn't come into play until your order is £15 or over.

Happy who, what, where and whening <----- my made up word for the day!

Peek A Boo Penguin Book Collection £4.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 12 January, 2012 at 9:00 am

Peek A Boo Penguin Book Collection £4.99 @ The Book PeopleThe Book People are selling these four educational Peek a Boo Penguin books for £4.99 instead of £15.96.

No one is ever too young to be given books and these four Peek a Boo Penguin books are just perfect for young minds to get to stuck into.  The four titles included are:

  • Colour and Shape
  • Numbers and Counting
  • Sounds and Letters and
  • Ready for Reading

Along with introducing early learning concepts, the pages of each Peek a Boo penguin book contain brightly coloured illustrations and photographs, are brightly coloured and have lots to do and discover - like a Peek a Boo penguin on each page to find.

If you're having a party for a youngster soon a few Peek a Boo Penguin book collections, split up, are well worth considering for inclusion in party bags - personally I'd rather give a young child a book to take home rather than a bit of plastic tat that costs the same and will just end up being thrown away after five minutes.

A single item delivery charge of £1.95 will apply if you only order these lovely Peek a Boo Penguin books - free delivery doesn't kick in until your order is over £15.

Happy reading!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, A Tale of Two Cities, Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist are also classics that are well worth downloading to share with the kids. And parents can enjoy titles that are not the usual classics but also new books written by fresh voices that cost absolutely nothing to download and enjoy.

This is a brilliant link for those of you who got a Kindle for Christmas and are looking for titles to bulk up your collections.

Lego Star Wars Character Encyclopedia £5 @ Amazon

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 6 January, 2012 at 11:00 am

Lego Star Wars Character Encyclopedia £5 @ AmazonThe last time I wrote about this LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia (back in September) it was just under £10, now you can grab a copy for just £5; bargain!

I was going to buy my this LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia for my youngest son for Christmas, I'd already bought him another encyclopedia much earlier in the year (like July!) and then got carried away with other Star Wars bits and pieces so the LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia was put on hold.

I'm rather glad I waited now as it's almost half as cheap again and a definite bargain having been reduced down to £5 from its original £14.99 - if I buy the LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia this time then it will be the earliest I've ever bought a Christmas present!

It features more than 300 minifigures and over 400 images.  The minifigures are organised in order of their appearance in the movies, each LEGO Star Wars minifigure has a full-page character profile with lots of fascinating facts - I can hear Bear now, "Did you KNOW...?"

The Lego Star Wars Character Encyclopedia also features an exclusive Han Solo minifigure, receiving a medal in the scene from 'A New Hope'.

There's no delivery to pay if you choose the SuperSaver option or you can pay a bit more and have it delivered faster, but in my experience the SSD has always been pretty quick anyway.

Octonauts Big Book Of Ocean Adventures £3.99 @ The Book People

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 5 January, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Octonauts Big Book Of Ocean Adventures £3.99 @ The Book People

The Big Book of Ocean Adventures is part of the very popular Octonauts series and is down from £14.99 to £3.99 at The Book People. You can also get free delivery using the code below if you haven’t already used it before.

The Big Book of Ocean Adventures takes children on a journey through the ocean teaching them all about life on the ocean floor. The Octonauts embark on six exciting missions and encounter some amazing creatures including a shy and retiring Decorator Crab, a Whale Shark and a Giant Squid.

I recognise those creatures so it is entirely likely that these Octonauts adventures are the same as the ones on TV, which I think is a bit poor really. They haven’t got very many episodes to start with so it would be nice if the books were at least original stories.

Still, each story is accompanied by a fact file that tells kids all about the different animals that the Octonauts encounter. To get free delivery use the code DEC11FREE.

Shakespeare Story Collection (16 Books) £9.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 5 January, 2012 at 10:00 am

Shakespeare Story Collection (16 Books) £9.99 @ The Book PeopleI'm rather fond of Shakespeare, I love his stories and I love the fact that you can grab this Shakespeare Story Collection for just £9.99 from The Book People.

To buy, or not to buy shouldn't be your question when it comes to this Shakespeare Story Collection - 16 of William Shakespeare's most famous plays and stories have been rewritten especially for kids.

The illustrations have been drawn by Tony Ross whose style you'll definitely recognise if you have lots of children's books in your house - he's a bit of a modern day Quentin Blake.

If you switch off when you hear the name Shakespeare because you had to read one of his plays during English Lit' at school, now's your chance to find out what the plays were REALLY about - lots of people over at HUKD have ordered this Shakespeare Story Collection for their kids and admit, quietly, to looking forward to all the Shakespeare plays and stories being made clear.

I think this is an awesome book deal and the free delivery code DEC11FREE still appears to be working, if it doesn't by the time you order your Shakespeare Story Collection then a single item delivery charge of £1.95 will apply.

Amazing Annuals At Clearance Prices @ Amazon

Amazing Annuals At Clearance Prices @ Amazon

I haven’t been paying much attention to the sales if I am honest. I’ve had that horrible bug that’s been going around and have been more interested in my blanket than my bank account. Today it all changed as I zoomed about the net with glee and uncovered an entire section on Amazon for clearance books!

The clearance books include a whack of 2012 annuals (as is pretty expected, really) which run the gamut from £1.59 in price and up. Almost all of them have been reduced by more than 60%. You will find the Doctor Who, Jacqueline Wilson, Beano, Match of the Day, Merlin, Official Manchester United, Club Penguin, Family Guy and Ben & Holly annuals in the clearance sale.

There are also calendars from the likes of One Direction and JLS, and a ton of ace books for parents to enjoy too. I am eyeballing the My Kitchen Table gift pack that’s down from £79.99 to only £19.99 and the Skullduggery Pleasant collection (for my niece), that is down to £9.99.

There are some fantastic savings here so take a look and enjoy…
