Baby Freebie: QV Skincare Samples

By Sarah Kensington in Freebies on 30 July, 2010 at 11:00 am

Baby Freebie: QV Skincare Samples You can’t beat getting something for nothing!

Unless you’ve been to Australia it’s not likely that you’ll have heard of QV Skincare for babies.  It’s the Aussie’s favourite moisturiser and is often recommended by dermatologists there and is being launched here.

It’s was developed to help treat skin issues and maintain its health and let’s face it, if it can do the job under the fierce glare of the Aussie sun and their climate then it’s going to have no trouble with our UK skin!

They product range includes bath oil – which is great stuff in general, if you’ve never used it before then definitely try some if it’s included in the free samples!

There’s also cream in a tube, or cream in a tub, skin lotion and body wash if you really don’t like the idea of the bath oil.

I have no idea whether you’ll get a sample of everything or just some of the QV products but I’m pretty sure that they’re going to be up to the job of looking after and nourishing scrumptious delicate baby skin.

Baby Freebie: Free Recipe Holder From Organix

Organix are giving away free recipe folders on their site that you can use to store all of your baby weaning and feeding recipes, many of which they’ll give you for free too! All you have to do is sign up and wait patiently for your freebie to arrive.

The site has some pretty cool extras as well. What I rather like is the fact that their twitter stream lists great deals on Organix products from their suppliers. That is good customer service and shows how they know their market.

Baby Freebie: Free Recipe Holder From OrganixSo, the recipe folder looks pretty sturdy and big but there are limited supplies so if this appeals to you then you’d better get registering, fast. This does also gain you access to the Organix baby club which we’ve mentioned before.

The club offers lots of other freebies and advice, so if you’re new parents looking for some great ideas on how to tackle feeding your baby then the site has a lot to offer you.

Huggies Super Dry Carry Pack Two Packs For £2 @ Boots

This particular deal is a total winner but does require a little bit of hard work first, so bear with me! To start with you need to go here and register for a Huggies voucher that will get you a free pack of Huggies nappies.

Once you’ve registered and received your voucher amble into Boots and take a look at their current deals for one third off selected packs of Huggies nappies. The Super-Dry range currently has this offer running so these are a good bet.

The voucher is supposed to be for a free pack of nappies but when you combine the voucher value of £5.98 with the 1/3 off then you can get your two packs for only £2. This deal was checked by the lovely lottysdad08 and so you should sail through and nab yourself a spectacular bargain.

If this is a little confusing please feel free to drop me a line and I’ll talk you through it. Otherwise, I wish you a very smug and cheap shop for that ultimate baby essential.

Cybermummy Freebies For Me!

By Emma Kelly in Freebies on 4 July, 2010 at 9:00 am

Cybermummy Freebies For Me!

Yesterday, Tamsin and I attended the first ever Cybermummy conference in London.

Being PlayPennies, we all love freebies and the Cybermummy conference was astounding for them. I wanted to share a picture of the loot that I got. Click the image above to see what I received! There were loads of reps giving out all the useful freebies that I am using every day – from Huggies to Tommee Tippee, so these items will gladly be used in my house. I had to fly home to Belfast shortly after the conference so I actually had to purchased an extra holdall to check in on the plane, just to get my freebies home with me!

Apart from all the excellent loot, we got to meet some lovely UK mummy bloggers and put faces to the names we’ve been seeing online. We met the authors from blottedcopybook, violetposy, familyfriendlyworking, nurturestore, and loads more.

We also heard some of the mummies read out blog posts, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the oestrogen-filled room. The conference staff had strategically placed tissues on the tables beforehand, anticipating the tears to come! Definitely get Kleenex to sponsor the event next year!

So if any mummy bloggers are reading this and weren’t able to attend cybermummy this year, you really should next year – it was fab!

Mums Freebie: Hello Method Laundry Detergent

By Tamsin Oxford in Freebies on 27 June, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Mums Freebie: Hello Method Laundry Detergent

Fancy a free sample of a new laundry detergent from Method? Well, they have just launched a new variation of their laundry detergents that’s made with something they call ‘smartclean’ technology. This patent-pending formula uses a radical technology to deliver outstanding cleaning power with only a quarter of the dose of a leading brand.

The tiny bottle gets you 25 loads and the product is made from 95% natural and renewable ingredients. It’s biodegradable and non-toxic and, thanks to the concentrated formula, the bottle requires less energy to make and uses 36% less plastic than traditional detergents.

The bottle comes with a precision dosing pump so you don’t have to fumble with measures or spill crumbly powder to the floor. It’s also small enough to fit in your handbag, making it really easy to manage if you use a Laundromat or are struggling to do the laundry while carrying a baby on your hip.

The form for your freebie is pretty short and won’t take you too long to fill out and soon you’ll be able to give this product a try. It’s going to be interesting to see if this will actually deliver everything it claims to.

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!

PlayPennies is all about saving money, cutting corners cleverly, and being a penny savvy parent. So, this week I went out into the world and interrogated a bunch of brilliant parents to uncover their best money saving tips, ideas and strategies.

From putting clothes on their backs to eating out to family entertainment, these tips are pure genius and, if you’re not doing these things already, will hopefully help you keep your money where it should be – in your wallet.

The Clothes

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents! These are an expensive necessity, aren’t they? Even when they are discounted to as little as £4 for an outfit in Tescos, they add up and up and up. It doesn’t take long for your bank account to creak ominously after kitting them out for school, the season, and extramural activities.

I shopped in upmarket charity shops when my son was a baby,” said Kelly, “I would target shops in Hampstead, the Chilterns and so forth. He had an amazing wardrobe of clothes for next to nothing!”

This principle is just as easily applied to buying your own clothes too.

I often trawl the charity shops across the board,” said Sandy, “I often find fabulous clothes for myself at the same time as my kids. If anyone asks where I got them from I only use one simple word –  vintage. That makes everything sound terribly glam.”

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!Sam, one of our resident PP experts only had these succinct words to say, “Don’t buy too many clothes for newborn babies. They grow too fast.”

He’s right. I sorted out 90 percent of my daughter’s wardrobe from eBay and many of the clothes were brand new because the babies had outgrown them too fast. Ebay, and similar auction sites, are also a great way to stock up on essentials for younger kids without spending a fortune.

I landed a box of 87 baby clothes, many of them brand new and unworn, for £3,” said Holly, “I had to pay a hefty £7 for postage but it was worth every single penny. There was at least £200 worth of clothes in there!”

The Food

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!

Sometimes they eat. Sometimes they don’t. They always seem to be hungry just when you’re miles away from any type of food source. Actually, food can become something of a daily issue with kids but, without delving into the psychology of it all, these parents have some great tips on all aspects of this tricky subject.

A pack of dry brown onion soup mix adds loads of flavour to just about anything remotely meaty,” says Kerry, “And it costs so little. It adds richness to casseroles, marinades and gravies.”

Lunchboxes and flasks aimed at kids are either long lasting and expensive, or cheap and tat,” says Helen, “It costs less if you buy plain containers and decorate them with your own waterproof stickers and a name label.”

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!I clip coupons and check which restaurants are doing money-saving vouchers,” says Kelly, “Pizza Express and Prezzo often have deals on. Then a treat doesn’t have to be cost prohibitive.”

Always take a packed lunch when travelling, as meals in motorway service stations, airports and cafes are expensive for what they are and, woefully, a small child will usually not eat much of it,” adds Helen.

Make your own fruit juice ice lollies instead of buying the shop ones,” adds Kerry, “You could get a mold, or use fruit juice and/or a mix of flattened carbonated drinks in re-used yoghurt cartons. Just like Big Cook Little Cook, suspend a stick in the middle by sticking a piece of sticky tape across the yoghurt cup and making a slit big enough to push the stick through.”

The Home

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents! Our resident parents also have brilliant ideas on how to cut costs around the home. These little tips will save on your phone bill, your electricity and even fix that carbon footprint of yours.

Buy a Wonderbag and save a fortune in the electricity that you use in cooking, while offsetting your carbon footprint,” says Kerry, “These are also great for keeping frozen stuff cold while you’re travelling.”

I have switched to a VoIP phone for my landline,” says Luke, “My deal is with Vonage and I get free unlimited calls to landlines in 25 countries plus free calls to mobiles in four countries. This has drastically reduced my monthly phone bill from £45 plus a month to only £11 a month.”

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!I get my artistically gifted, albeit slapdash, five-year old daughter to make all the cards for family and her little friends,” says Vicki, “And when I’m short on wrapping paper, I get her to paint, glitter or stamp all over a plain sheet and use that instead.”

Avoid having expensive and competitive birthday parties for the whole class at home by asking the teacher if you can bring a cake, and maybe one or two games, to make your child’s birthday special at school instead. It’s something you can do in the lunchbreak,” adds Helen.

The Days Out

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!

Entertaining those little minds can also become something of a hidden expense, especially if you’re always forking out for a snack or an entry fee. Never fear, however, for our parents have even more gems in this department.

On a rainy day, or a bored day in the holidays, I indulge my son’s love of plastic tat by giving him a fiver to spend in Poundland,” says Kelly, “Kids LOVE Poundland.”

She has a point. It’s also a good place to shop for hobby supplies, birthday supplies and so forth. Just be careful to check how much stuff you’re getting for a pound, though, as you can often get things for cheaper elsewhere.

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!Make friends with your local library,” says Sam, “It’s much more fun and relaxed as an outing to go to the library to borrow books and DVDs than it would be to go shopping. And it’s cheaper.”

Make use of free parks instead of going to paid-for play environments,” says Kerry, “Pack a picnic of homemade snacks so that you can resist the ice-cream vendors and cafes.”

See everything through a child’s eyes,” adds Helen, “I took my little boy on the London eye but it was a waste because he was twenty times more excited about going on a double-decker bus and in a black cab. I think that kids have more fun having a picnic with their parents, or similar activities, than an expensive all-day excursion to the theme park.”

The Parents Time Out

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!

Babysitting. It’s expensive and terrifying and often we end up staying at home instead. Here are some neat ideas for us poor parents to adopt.

Set up a babysitting circle and get other parents and friends to join,” says Vicki, “Try sites like My Night Off or Swap Babysitting.com.”

Feature: Brilliant, Brainy Parents!Get together with a few other mums or families you trust and agree to trade babysitting hours with each other so when you are in a pickle you can call on someone without feeling guilty and, most importantly, having to pay,” says Helen, “Also make sure to invite friends from school or childcare to your home so you can ask for the favour to be returned on those days you need it.”

Hopefully these tips have inspired, galvanised and excited you and will help in your parent penny pinching plans. However, if you’ve got an even better tip please pop it here, I definitely could do with some more ideas…

Baby Freebie: Johnson’s Baby Soothing Naturals

Johnson’s are launching a new range of products called Baby Soothing Naturals and it’s their first line of baby skincare prodicts to combine the gentleness of Johnson’s Baby with the soothing powers of nature (well, that’s what it says on their site anyway so stop visualising trees trying to hug you).

Baby Freebie: Free Cuddly Cow And Pregnancy Diary From Cow & Gate

By Tamsin Oxford in Freebies on 1 June, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Baby Freebie: Free Cuddly Cow And Pregnancy Diary From Cow & Gate

I happen to have this very cuddly cow in my daughter’s increasingly impressive cuddly tow collection. It’s lasted her since she was born (I got it while I was pregnant) and it was one of her favourites when she was a baby.

The cow can be machine washed, is soft and cuddly, small and perfect for little hands and just adorable. Cow & Gate sent the little cow so quickly I was really impressed although I didn’t get the free diary that you can get with this particular freebie.

Use the code BPME15C when you sign up to the Cow & Gate club and if you join in before you are 32 weeks into your pregnancy then you’ll also get your free pregnancy diary. The site is packed with tons of interesting information as well, so even if you’re a bit too far along for the diary there is plenty for you to enjoy on the site.

You also get money off vouchers with your membership and emails that keep you up to date on the latest special offers. The form that you fill in on registration will take you a little while though, so be patient.

Thanks to pinkmelonsmr2 at HUKD for the pregnancy freebie!

Parents Freebie: Read A Book And Give To Charity

By Tamsin Oxford in Freebies on 24 May, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Parents Freebie: Read A Book And Give To Charity

The written word is, for me, the ultimate playground. I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child and continue to adore the smell, texture and experience that books offer. I’ve even been known to get all faint in big libraries. But enough about my weirdness…This freebie is a fantastic way to enjoy the written word and donate something special to charity.

The premise is simple. You read a book online and they donate a book to charity. So far, they’ve donated 7, 549 books. This may seem like a small amount but it’s more than nothing at all. All you need to do is choose and support a literacy partner that focuses on putting books in the hands of children in need.

Then you can select any one of a number of award winning stories and spend time reading them with your kids. Through your actions, books are donated to charity. While this campaign is primarily based in America, the goal is the same – take books to people in all walks of life. I’ve joined and it’s a fantastic idea.
