by Lynley Oram in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Lego City Let's Build! Activity Book with Lego Figurine £2.92 @ AmazonGot a Lego fan in the house? Chances are pretty high that, if your offspring is aged 12 or under, you most certainly do. This Lego City: Let's Build! Activity Book with Lego Figurine has been reduced by Amazon, from £4.99 to £2.92. Delivery is free with Amazon Prime. Some of these Activity books have been found as low as £3 in-store in Asda, but otherwise this is about the cheapest price I could find online.

Let's get building! Little Lego builders everywhere will love this fantastic activity book. First, construct the Lego City builder toy, then read the stories and try the puzzles which are all about building. What more could every Lego City Construction fan want?

There are three reviews on the site, all giving it five stars. Here's what one reviewer had to say. "My Grandson loves Lego, he has so many kits I would never presume to buy another for him. When I saw this book I thought at last, I can get him something. All the shops I have been in, I have never seen a book such as this . He loves it. It is an excellent addition to his vast Lego collection."

Inspiration Works Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom Magical Laptop £6.25 @ Amazon

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 1 February, 2012 at 7:00 pm

Inspiration Works Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom Magical Laptop £6.25 @ Amazon

There’s a massive 75% off of the Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom Magical Laptop from Inspiration Works at Amazon today. The RRP is £24.99, but they’re selling at £6.25, which is a fantastic £18.74 saving.

The Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom Magical Laptop is illustrated with four game modes and comes with a special ‘magic wand’ to answer the questions.  You can hear the voices of Ben and Holly and all their friends and listen to music too.

There are four reviewers on Amazon for this product and they’ve all given it 5 stars saying that it is a robust toy, safe with no sharp edges, easy to pick up and handle and very durable.

According to one of them, it has ‘great sounds and many functions’, which is always useful and while the guide says suitable for children over three (probably because of the wand), recipients from the age of two and up to the age of four seem to love it.

It seems to be a great buy for any Ben and Holly fan.

FyrFlyz Assortment £2 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 1 February, 2012 at 6:00 pm

FyrFlyz Assortment £2 @ Amazon

Amazon sort of faded away in January I noticed, with not so many great deals hanging about. Well, they seem to have kicked February off with a bang. Here is yet another great deal for kids with the FyrFlyz assortment down from £7.99 to only £2. Nice.

The FyrFlyz are a revolutionary new spinning toy that puts the power to create amazing light shows into every child’s hands. The FyrFlyz are precision balanced instruments that are designed to spin on their axes and they can create continuous movement in figures of eight, Saturn Rings, Shooting Stars and more.

They can do this by swinging the connection strings and either applying tension or allowing slack. The real fun begins when the lights go out and the FyrFlyz multi-colour LED lights turn the movement into amazing light shows that kids will love. Kids can learn tricks as they go and as they improve they will come up with more and more variations. I love these!

Drummond Park Stephen Mulhern’s Magic Set £6 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 1 February, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Drummond Park Stephen Mulhern’s Magic Set £6 @ Amazon

The Drummond Park Stephen Mulhern magic kig is down from £14.99 to only £6 on Amazon. This, of course, comes with free delivery and a very tasty saving of £8.99 off the original price. This would make an ace addition to any Present Cupboard.

This magic set is a great way for budding magicians to learn from ITV’s Stephen Mulhern. Kids over the age of eight will have no problem reading the instructions and learning these astonishing card, coin and ball tricks.

Make cards disappear up your sleeve, astound with the self opening matchboxes, reveal sweets in a closed box and uncover the mystery of the folding note. There are enough gigs and tricks in here to make little magic monsters have hours of fun and the price is pretty near perfect too.

Even adults will have fun trying out some of these tricks I reckon and I am so nabbing this for when my daughter is the right age.

MaByLand Overnight Changing Bag Set £25.34 @ Amazon

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 27 January, 2012 at 7:00 pm

MaByLand Overnight Changing Bag Set £25.34 @ AmazonAmazon have a MaByLand Overnight Changing Bag on sale for 51% off the RRP of £51.99. It’s reduced by £26.65 to £25.34.

I don’t think I’ll ever stop being surprised at the exuberant prices of nappy bags. They just seem so overly expensive, when there are fab options available at much less. For me £51 for a nappy bag is too much, but £25 is much closer to my comfort zone.

This particular piece of baby-equipment gold comes with a detachable changing mat with pockets, inbuilt bottle warmer packet and two detachable clear multi-purpose PVC bags. It also has an adjustable and detachable shoulder strap and has been fully safety tested – not sure what for: you don’t carry the baby in it!

According to the description it is spacious and has lots of different sized pockets, and is made from an easy to wipe clean waterproof material. There’s only one reviewer who commented that the changing mat looked larger on the picture than it was in reality.

If these things influence your decisions, the MaByLand Overnight Changing Bag Set was a finalist in ghte Practical Parenting and Pregnancy Awards and won a silver award in the BizzieBaby awards for 2010-2011 too.

Character Building Royal Navy Assault Playset £4.63 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 25 January, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Character Building Royal Navy Assault Playset £4.63 @ Amazon

Ok, this is quite the longest name for a toy ever. The Character Building Royal Navy Assault Rib Mini Construction Playset. Phew. Anyway that toy is now down to £4.63 from £9.99 which is a saving of £5.36 in total plus you get free delivery.

So, what is this Character Building Royal Navy Assault thingy? Well, apparently your kids can become experts on amphibious warfare with this Royal Navy construction playset that features an assault rib and loading dock. Landing crafts are capable of carrying up to eight Royal Marines Commandos with full kit at full speed.

Your mission is to get your commandos to their destination so they can disembark and secure the area. The set comes with one microfigure wearing a patrol vest and assault rifle and it is suitable for kids over the age of five. Is it just me who thinks this looks a lot like Lego?

Xia Xia Crabs Confetti Cottage £2.99 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 24 January, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Xia Xia Crabs Confetti Cottage £2.99 @ Amazon

The Xia Xia Confetti Cottage by Character Options is reduced from £9.99 to £2.99 at Amazon and it comes with free Super Saver Delivery. This is a tasty discount of £7 off the original price but it comes with none of the (expensive) little crabs.

The Character Options Xia Xia Confetti Cottage (p.s. the Xia Xia is pronounces Sha-Sha) is designed specifically for the little crab creates that you can buy separately for around £7 on Amazon. I am sure you can probably get the cheaper elsewhere though.

The cottage doubles as a carrying case so kids can take their Xia Xia with them wherever they go. The set also joins up to other playsets in the same range so you can end up creating a crazy crab city. The crabs even have shells sold separately apparently.

I am not sure if this is a bath set or not. I mean, surely crabs need water, right? Anyway, if you have the Xia Xia crabs then this bargain should suit you just fine.

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear talking projection alarm clock for £9.99 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 22 January, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Toy Story Buzz Lightyear talking projection alarm clock for £9.99 @ Amazon

Oooh, now this is a low price deal that any Toy Story fan will love. The Toy Story Buzz Lightyear talking projection alarm clock is down from £29.99 to only £9.99 at Amazon, that’s a saving of 67% and £20 off the original price!

The Toy Story Buzz Lightyear alarm clock is a rather fancy affair. You get a 3D sculpt of Buzz Lightyear that features as an LED clock as well as this is built into the base of the toy. This will definitely help with teaching your kids the digital time!

The alarm clock also amazingly projects the time against the bedroom ceiling and says some stock Buzz Lightyear phrases too. He’ll say things like To Infinity and Beyond or This is an intergalactic emergency!

A brilliant price for a great doodad and perfect for adding to the present cupboard – I’ve already nabbed two of them for mine.

January Sales Baby Bargains

by Lynley Oram in Features on 19 January, 2012 at 1:00 pm

January Sales Baby BargainsIt is January. You probably already noticed that. Hard to miss it when all the telltale signs are there. Grey skies, dark afternoons and empty bank accounts. Another clue is all the signs up announcing January sales. Although that's not quite as much an indicator as it used to be. Nowadays, the January sales seem to start in December.

However, here we are coming into the tail end of the sales, and anything that is left is going to go bargain basement. Also, there are stores that do GASP start their sales in January, and others that refresh the stock in the sale section each week. Here's a roundup of the big retailers of baby stuff who are still running sales. Boots, for example, have finished their sales so we've not included them here. Likewise, JoJo Maman Bebe still has its sale section, but the winter sale with up to 75% off seems to be finished now.

The same with the Mothercare Clearance shop, although the usual reductions you'll find year round are in there so it is still worth having a look. Such as the 50% Off Top Products section.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Finger Puppet Book £3.99 @ Amazon

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 18 January, 2012 at 7:00 pm

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Finger Puppet Book £3.99 @ Amazon

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Finger Puppet Book is currently on sale at Amazon for £3.99 instead of £7.99, a nice 50% saving.

I have a confession to make: I’ve never read the Very Hungry Caterpillar! I have no idea what the story is about – although I assume it’s a bug that eats a lot – and I have no idea what I’m apparently missing out on in this book. Don’t feel too sorry for me, I grew up with other classics.

This is a counting book, not the original story book, and while that was fine for some of the reviewers who were able to recall and adapt the story to meet their child’s age, it was a big disappointment to others who were after the actual story.

Apparently this is a cardboard paged book, ideal for younger readers,  who can count along and identify colours with the finger puppet that wriggle his way through the book.

The book consists of 14 pages, and has a 3.8 out of 5 star rating by Amazon reviewers.

Electronic Cash Register And Scanner ELC £11 @ Amazon

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 16 January, 2012 at 7:00 pm

Electronic Cash Register And Scanner ELC £11 @ Amazon

Amazon have 50% off the Early Learning Centre Electronic Cash Register and Scanner, which normally sells at £22 but is now reduced to £11. It's the same price at ELC, but you'll have to pay postage too.

According to the blurb, this cash register is the perfect inspiration for playing shops, pretending to be the customer or shopkeeper and enjoying real-world imaginative play.

This version has a beeping scanner (for which you need 3 AAA batteries), a chip and pin machine and a working microphone with which to drive the family crazy make important announcements.

The Electronic Cash Register and Scanner comes with 12 pieces of food, play paper money and coins and a play credit card, card reader and of course, the till and microphone.

Reviews on it are generally positive, though some complain that the drawer jumps out too enthusiastically.

One reviewer (at ELC) says, “We've used it's calculation capabilities to teach some basic adding and subtracting whilst she plays which is great too. The play money resembles real notes and coins which is helpful. The scanner generates random numbers which won't teach value (when it can cost £7000 or £7 for the same item) but it is good fun.”

She felt it was money well spent.

Philips Avent Manual Breast Pump £13.99 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 16 January, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Philips Avent Manual Breast Pump £13.99 @ Amazon

The Philips Avent SCF310/20 manual breast pump is down from £28 to £13.99 on Amazon and it comes with free delivery too. While this saving of £14.01 is an excellent discount, I am not sure that investing in a manual breast pump is that great an idea.

The Philips Avent manual breast pump is easy to assemble and use and is handheld throughout. The massage cushion has been designed to mimic the flow of the baby suckling and for your comfort while you use it. This is one of the best breast pumps around for that reason alone (well, I think so).

The Philips Avent manual breast pump is portable and perfect for travel and is interchangeable with other Avent products. In this box you get the pump, a feeding bottle, a bottle stand and funnel cover, and a sealing disc.

I personally would not recommend a manual breast pump, although they are handy for travel, as they are rather tiring, take a long time and your hands ache! However, this deal is really good and it will make a very handy portable system if you fancy travelling.

Mould & Paint Glitter Mermaid Plaster Kit £3.99 @ Amazon

by Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 15 January, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Mould & Paint Glitter Mermaid Plaster Kit £3.99 @ Amazon

This would make a great little creative gift for a birthday party out there this month. Down from £7.49 to £3.99, the Mould & Paint Glitter Mermaid Plaster kit looks like a lovely idea and something to keep little fingers busy in the cold months.

The Mould & Paint glitter mermaid kit lets you make your very own glitter mermaids. The pack comes with a single mould and six different mermaid designs and materials to make six magnets or badges.

You mix the plaster and pour it into the moulds and wait for it to set. Then you use the included paints to decorate the mermaids and then sprinkle some glitter on them to bring some sparkle to the whole affair. And that’s it! Lots of mess a little bit of fuss and plenty of fun.

These sets are suitable for kids over the age of five and would make great presents for the round of 2012 birthday parties.

Tommee Tippee Heat Sensitive Bath Mat £7.90 @ Amazon

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 15 January, 2012 at 11:00 am

Tommee Tippee Heat Sensitive Bath Mat £7.90 @ AmazonThere's no way I would have paid the original price of £19.99 for this mat, but the Tommee Tippee Heat Sensitive Bath Mat is on offer at Amazon for £7.90. Delivery is free with Amazon Prime. I think this is a much better price. Otherwise just go for a generic, cheap bath mat and use your elbow, that's what I say!

What attracts me to this bath mat is that it is colourful and fun. Especially when you're dealing with toddlers, anything that makes bath time a little bit more attractive is a GOOD THING.

I got one of those bath thermometer things when my son was a baby, and honestly how useless was it? It was meant to be heat sensitive but never seemed to work really. It would say the bath was hot when it was clearly too cold. I found dipping my elbow in, the time honoured method, was a far better solution.

So I probably wouldn't suggest getting this bath mat just because you want to make sure the bath water is the right temperature. But I would recommend getting a bath mat. They add a bit of comfort to the bath, and for slightly nervous toddlers they add a bit of security. Even now my son prefers to get into a bath with his mat, finding the slipperly bottom a little bit unnerving.

The mat offers a quick and easy way to check that baby's bath water is not too hot. The heat sensor will clearly tell you when the water is too hot by spelling it out in the red spot on the seabed. The fun sea characters will also keep your baby entertained while they splash around.

Sylvanian Families Beechwood Hall £29.99 @ Amazon

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 15 January, 2012 at 8:00 am

Sylvanian Families Beechwood Hall £29.99 @ Amazon

The Sylvanian Families Beechwood Hall play house is currently reduced from £59.99 to £29.99, a 50% saving of £30.

The perfect family home – although a little small for regular people, Beechwood Hall is still the perfect family home for Sylvanians.

It has 3 rooms upstairs plus a balcony, a landing area and 2 rooms downstairs . There’s a large play area for the ground floor which can be turned over to create a green garden area.

It also has lights that light up – these require 2 X AA batteries, which aren’t included.

Reviewers are generally keen on it, and particularly like the fact that it closes easily so can be used to pack away furniture, which isn’t included, and Sylvanians too – who also aren’t included.

I think it’s quite expensive for essentially an empty dolls house, but then, it is a country hall, and it is for Sylvanias, so who’m I to argue. At least now it’s half price.

Melissa & Doug Stack & Sort Board £4.90 @ Amazon

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 14 January, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Melissa & Doug Stack & Sort Board £4.90 @ AmazonMy son had quite a few of these sorts of things when he was a kid. Colour matching, stacking up shapes. Older babies and toddlers love them, and younger babies ... well they tend to gum on them but still, they're a good toy. And always nice to get wooden ones. This Melissa & Doug Stack & Sort Board has been reduced on Amazon from £6.99 to £4.90. Delivery is free with Amazon Prime.

This is the sort of learning fun that kids really enjoy, at least in my experience. The concept is simple enough. The goal is to match the colour and quantity of the 15 colourful wooden pieces to the printed key on the sturdy solid-wood board.

The manufacturer's description on the website calls this "a perfect first manipulative that helps teach matching and counting skills". Hmmm I wonder sometimes where they come up with this guff. I think what it means is that it is good for helping little ones develop their fine motor skills, learning to manipulate and handle objects with a specific goal in mind - get the shapes on the pegs in the right shapes and colours. To be honest, I can't imagine any child not actually developing fine motor skills on their own unless they were left in a particularly sterile environment. But the point is that they enjoy doing it, and these toys are a baby's idea of fun.

“That’s Not My” Books £2.49 @ Amazon

by Luschka van Onselen in Deals on 12 January, 2012 at 7:00 pm

“That’s Not My” Books £2.49 @ Amazon

The fantastic “That’s Not My” book range is reduced from the RRP of £5.99 to £2.49 – a 58% saving – at the moment. They’ve been reduced for a few days already, so I’m not sure how long it will last.

If you’ve never seen these books, you might not get the fuss, but let me tell you, the children love them. They’re fantastic for teaching sensory things like bumpy, soft, and shiny (and a host of others) and are simple enough that toddlers can navigate their way through them on their own too, once they’ve been read a few times.  They make fab bedtime stories too, when you really don’t feel like reading a lot. They take about 1 minute to read, so you can stretch it out to talk about all the elements of the page and make up stories to fit the time you have to spend.  Brilliant.

Here are just a few of the available titles:

  • That's not my Kitten
  • That's not my Monkey
  • That's not my Puppy
  • That's not my Fairy
  • That's not my Teddy
  • That's not my Penguin
  • That's not my Snowman
  • That's not my Santa
  • That's not my Robot
  • That's not my Train
  • That's not my Princess
  • That's not my Bear
