Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser £20 @ Tesco Direct

Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser 1This is the same steam steriliser that I used when my son was a baby. It was passed on to two other mums that I know of! I loved it. Tesco Direct are selling the Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser for less than half price at £20 marked down from £45.

There are a lot of different steaming options, such as devices that fit in microwaves and dishwashers. But electric steam sterilisers like the Philips Avent model are still perennial favourites. Maybe everyone else is like me - I don't have either a microwave or a dishwasher! Or maybe it is a matter of trust. An electric steam steriliser is a tried and tested device. I'm never completely sure that microwaves hit all the spots evenly, and there's always the worry about residue salt when using a dishwasher.

As far as I can remember, the steam steriliser plugs in, you stick in the right amount of water and use the de-scaling sachets now and again. And it all works. There's nothing more to it than that really.

Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser 2They've updated it a little since my day (all of five years ago!). The internal baskets can be clipped together to be used in a dishwasher as well. The Avent Express electric steam set has an 8min sterilising cycle.  It holds up to siz Avent bottles.  Also, and this is the helpful bit, it keeps its contents sterile for six hours if left unopened.

We have a steam steriliser but didn't know you were meant to use a de-scaler?

You don't have to! My avent steriliser came with sachets of a lemony scented descaler that I used because I live in a hard water area. It doesn't take long at all for lime scale to build up. If you are finding that your steriliser is taking longer and longer to get hot enough, and the sterilise cycle is taking longer and longer, then give it a descale.
