Jobs for a SAHM?
Are there any legit jobs for a SAHM to do for some extra money? I have tried filling envelopes but that was a racket, I am not much of a sales person and most people I know are SAHMs so there doesn't seem to be much of a financial future in Avon/Bodyshop/Anne Summers etc. I'm really at my wits end with never having any money, but with two children, I just can't justify full time shop work or anything like that. Im not scared to work, juts want to put my kids first too.
It depends on how much money you want to make. Childcare is always a good option and our school run's regular courses for people looking to qualify as childminders so worth checking out. Are any of your children school age yet? Once they're at school working there is a good option. One of my friends has started as a lunchtime supervisor, and another is working as a catering assistant for the company that runs the kitchen. She's studying to get her catering qualifications too. Another is working as a classroom assistant for a special needs child. Their hours start and end with the school day and they're off in the holidays. To get to work in your school try volunteering first. The school may run a reading programme, or they may look for extra help at lunch times. Ask the head or deputy head or check at the office. Volunteer for the PTA - I do the newsletters and this involves going in to the school to use the computers and photocopiers. This has allowed me to get to know a lot of the teaching staff. This all gives you the edge when you apply for these jobs - and indeed for getting a heads up when the jobs come up. In London there's a recruitment company that specialises in finding flexible and part time work - look up Women Like Us. If you're not in London see what might be available in your area. It also depends on what your qualifications are. I've heard of one mum who did a book keeping course, and is doing the books for a couple of local businesses, which she does in her own time at home. Mostly in the evenings. Local councils often run courses for people who want to set up their own businesses - check with your local Surestart, and/or your job centre.
What is your background in? If it is in, say, office work then look at setting yourself up as a sort of concierge PA, doing office work for companies or businesses that can't justify having someone full time in-house. Transcribing is also an option if you can type, and are willing to buy the right equipment.
