Goodbye To The Tax Disc From October 1st 2014

Are you aware that from the 1^st of October, there will be no more tax discs? From that date, if you have a disc in date, you can remove it from your windscreen and destroy it. All records from that date will be held electronically. You’ll obviously still have to tax your vehicle and with no physical reminder, the DVLA will send you one by mail.

For the first time ever you’ll also be able to pay your car tax by monthly direct debit. You'll also have the option to pay six or twelve monthly by direct debit if that suits you better. This will apply to vehicles requiring tax from November 1st and you can find out more HERE

Other big changes if you’re buying or selling a car. In the past the tax has been transferable but no more. If you’re a buyer, you’ll have to tax the vehicle yourself, while if you’re the seller, you will be refunded the amount due on the remaining months but you have to notify the DVLA.

I agree it's all a great idea but why can't they do it in September :( I'm gonna have to pay for 6 months outright and wait to start direct debit.

It's a great idea but why not do it from September for them getting new cars instead of having one for a month than taking it out just a waste of paper. I'm loving the idea of direct debit too so if your post gets lost and you forget when it's due at least it's going to be paid

I think it's a great idea long time coming it will help so many people unable to pay 12 months upfront and help prevent the struggle to pay at Christmas as we all know right now it's hard to pay for both on a low income October can't come quick enough (_;)

Imagine the amount of work people in the dvla will have to suffer now processing all refunds etc every time a car gets sold as the tax has to be refunded to previous owner then instantly the new owner then has to go buy tax for it when it was already taxed say 10 minutes before. will be huge workload for staff and people like cops and traffic wardens having to check up each car when a disc would be in view.what if their computers arent up to date.innocent cars will be fined or towed . should have just stuck with making the payments easier and kept the disc.or do away with tax altogether

Finally a pay monthly option. I think it will lead to less untaxed and uninsured vehicles xx

Why can't we have the option to tax a car for a week or a month? Or claim back money to the nearest day for a refund? Since this system is fully automated, the only reason this option is not given is because extra revenue can be collected. If a car changes hands in the middle of a month, the seller has to pay the full month road tax (or whatever you like to call it) and the buyer also pays for the full month. This is a huge con if you ask me!

So if you sell your car to someone on the 5th of the month you could loose 25 days of the refund. Is this correct?

I like this idea but its obviously a way to cut costs which is also good. I just hope that the money is better spent improving the condition of some of the roads. Aberdeen city is now nicknamed Pot Hole City. Get it sorted out city council!!

Love the pay monthly option. Dowside is not being able to physically see the tax on possible nuisence vehicles.

direct debit is a great idea wish they had it years ago wen i was more for tax im only £30 a year now.suppose no discs will save money

Yaeh a now don't have a physical reminder of my wasted money on my wind shield as I avoid the massive pot holes :)

I think that when looking to buy a gym car you factor in the cost of tax'ing the vehicle so to buy a vehicle that has no tax will be an addition cost to a buyer. Also I don't think halfords will be happy they'll have to remove the tax disc holder section
