Any good ideas for teaching a toddler colours?

My son is 3 and he still confuses colours. Is there a good way of teaching him how to differentiate between different colours please?

My LO picked up primary and more common colours quite quickly, but still gets a little confused even now.

He is heavily into Thomas, so whenever a colour confuses him, we refer back to a character in Thomas. For example, the postbox is red like James, the digger is yellow like Kevin etc. He can also tell the difference between different shades of colours, although doesn't comment on this all the time. He might say its blue but not blue like Thomas, just blue which makes me chuckle!

I wouldn't worry that he gets confused with colours too much. My son was like that at 3. As long as he gets it right some or most of the time is OK. Remember too that some we consider colours in their own rights, are really shades - purple is a shade of blue for example. So if he called something blue when it was purple I didn't worry about it. Ditto orange and red, and pink and red.

Brilliant idea TheDitzyOne thank you, I'll have to try that out.
