no they dont. my friend does facepainting and she doesnt have a crb clearance. maybe if they work in a school or something the 'employer' will ask for one though.

There's a list of the jobs that require CRB checks on the DirectGov website. One of the requirements is that you either work with the same group of children on a regular basis (so you're in a position to gain their trust) or you do one to one or unsupervised work with children. Neither of these applies to face painters, unless they're going into the same school or venue every week with the same children, and I've never been anywhere where face painters are left alone with children.
