With two little lads I'm a big fan of Chad Valley toys. We've had several over the years and I'd say they've all withstood the not-exactly-gentle process by which my children seem to play. You used to be able to buy Chad Valley toys in Woolworths and I always thought of them as being synonymous with bargains but usually well-made and designed with the real loves and likings of little people. They're now exclusively available at Argos and at prices like this I don't think you can go wrong, if you're looking for something durable that will win the hearts of your own little pirate souls.
