10 Horrible Histories Books £9.99 @ The Book People

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 2:00 pm

10 Horrible Histories Books £9.99 @ The Book PeopleThe Book People are selling 10 Horrible Histories books for £9.99, they're full list price is £59.90.

I've written about these Horrible Histories books before; I keep seeing trailers on TV for a Dan Snow series on BBC Knowledge about the major cities in the world and how filthy they were 'way back when' which made me come and look for Horrible Histories again.

The 10 Horrible Histories books were on sale for £9.99 the first time I wrote about them too (maybe they're always £9.99 from The Book People!) and if you've not come across them before, you're in for a treat!

Essentially, Horrible Histories are historical accounts with the gross, gory, slimy, smelly and disgusting bits left IN - just the sort of thing that kids love and will have them absolutely engrossed, never again will history be boring.

The titles which make up this set of 10 Horrible Histories set are:

  • Slimy Stuarts
  • Awesome Egyptians
  • Vile Victorians
  • Rotten Romans
  • Terrible Tudors
  • Vicious Vikings
  • Groovy Greeks
  • Woeful Second World War
  • Measly Middle Ages
  • Frightful First World War

If you're looking for ideas and something different to put into party bags, rather than the usual plastic tat, then you could buy a set of these Horrible Histories books, split them up and put a book in each bag.

Single item delivery will cost you an additional £1.95, unless you find something else that takes your fancy and brings your order total to £25 or more.

Happy being grossed out by history!

Pintoy Doll's Buggy £29.99 @ Amazon

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Pintoy Doll's Buggy £29.99 @ AmazonAmazon are selling this Pintoy doll's buggy for £29.99, rather than its full £37.99 retail price - it's also an Amazon Deal of the Week so this price is guaranteed until 11.59pm tomorrow night; marvellous!

If I lapse into calling the Pintoy doll's buggy a Pintoy doll's 'pram', it's because it looks like a pram to me - a buggy is a pushchair or stroller in my language.

Anyway, whether you call it a buggy or a pram, it looks SO much nicer than the cheap plastic tat versions you can get for pushing dolls around in.

I'm not, and have never been, a fan of playing with dolls and I tend to shy away buying anything 'dolly' for any of the little girls in my life BUT, you know, I'd actually consider this Pintoy dolls buggy!

It's elegant and has a touch of class about it; it's made from wood and rubber that come from replenishable sources and also comes with a pillow and blanket for keeping 'dolly' warm and cosy.

Your Pintoy doll's buggy doesn't require any self assembly, so you can put your Allen keys away, and is suitable for little girls aged three years and older.

Happy dolly pushing!

'Free' Ladybird Books @ Daily And Sunday Mirror

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

'Free' Ladybird Books @ Daily And Sunday MirrorThe Daily and Sunday Mirror newspaper are giving away 'free' Ladybird books from today until 26 February - there are up to 100 to choose from and you can bag yourself a maximum of 25 if you manage to collect the tokens every day.

Now I say 'free', rather than 'FREEEEE', because it's all going to depend on your point of view and whether or not you, or someone you know, already gets the Daily Mirror (shudder!) every day.

You need two tokens for each Ladybird book that you want and tokens will be printed in the Daily and Sunday Mirror newspapers - the Daily Mirror costs 40 pence on weekdays, 70 pence on a Saturday and the Sunday Mirror costs £1 (really?!  One of our great British pounds for that publication?! Wow...).

On top of the newspaper cost you need to pay for the postage of your Ladybird books - so they're not truly free, but you don't need to pay the full retail price for them.

One you've collected your tokens, just come back and click the link above to go to the 'Ladybird Library' page which has a link to an order form - just follow the instructions from there and wait for up to 12 weeks(!!) from 7 March for your books to arrive; I hope you didn't want them in a hurry.

One last thing - if you go and LIKE the Daily Mirror Facebook page then you can download a free audio copy of  The Gingerbread Man.

Salter Kids In The Kitchen Measuring Set £6.99 @ Home Bargains

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 4 February, 2012 at 8:00 am

Salter Kids In The Kitchen Measuring Set £6.99 @ Home BargainsHome Bargains are currently selling this Salter Kids in the Kitchen measuring set for £6.99 - they say the full retail price is £26.99.

If you bought a Salter Kids in the Kitchen baking set a while back - we reviewed it back in 2010 and featured a deal for it in November last year - then this Salter Kids in the Kitchen measuring set will make a great kitchen companion for it.

I'm not sure about paying £26.99 for it, but £6.99 is definitely worth paying, at least in my opinon; your kitchen scales, timer and measuring spoons will be freed up if your young chef has their own Salter Kids in the Kitchen measuring set.

It comes with a set of mechanical, rather than digital, scales that can weigh ingredients to a maximum weight of one kilo in 25 gram increments.  There's also a kitchen timer and a 'measuring spoon man' - you can keep the scales but I want that timer and measuring spoon man - he's just awesome!

You can collect your Kids in the Kitchen measuring set for free, in-store, if you have a local Home Bargains otherwise standard home delivery will cost you an additional £2.95.

Free Competitions: Win £500 Of Morrisons Vouchers

by Sarah Macdonald in Comps on 3 February, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Free Competitions: Win £500 Of Morrisons VouchersI fly often and not the last time but the time before that I sat next to this really nice old chap who had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner; after dinner he took a couple of pills and within 20 minutes he was away with the proverbial fairies!  An hour later we had to put a call out for any medics on board - it was 'interesting'.

For my 'trouble' the cabin crew gave me a bottle of Lanson champagne (there were no spaces in first class, otherwise I would have been moved upstairs - gutted!) and I can highly recommend it!

The winner of this competition will win a case of Lanson champagne; feel free to share it with us here at PlayPennies *grin*

Closing date for entries is 29 February and you just need to hand over your details.

I don't know about you, but my grocery bill is always massive regardless of how hard I try to keep it under £100 a week!  I can tell you that a £500 Morrisons voucher wouldn't go amiss - if you feel the same then enter this competition and you could just win that very thing!

The answer is 27p and you need to enter before 26 February.

My youngest son got a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas and he's on the prowl for more games for it - if he was old enough he could enter this competition to win a 3D game collection for the Nintendo 3DS.

The answer is 'bingo' and you need to get your entries in before 29 February.

My office wall is usually awash with Post-Its (other sticky notes are available!) but apparently this is old fashioned and the good ol' Post-It is destined to become a thing of the past - at least that's what the makers of this Video Memo Pad are hoping (I will RESIST!).

The answer is 'magnetic back' and the closing date for entries is 17 February.

GOOD LUCK!

Playmobil Hospital £19.99 @ Home Bargains

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 3 February, 2012 at 11:00 am

Playmobil Hospital £19.99 @ Home BargainsHome Bargains are selling this Playmobil Hospital set for £19.99, rather than its full retail price of £44.99.

Playmobil sets always remind me of going to play at my pre-school friend, Rachel's, house - she had lots of Playmobil type 'stuff' and we used to play with it for hours.

This Playmobil Hospital set is perfect for all budding medics - doctors, nurses, surgeons or paramedics - and has everything they'll need to get their patients to A&E.

There's an emergency helicopter for those times when the road ambulance just won't make it in time - when the road ambulance isn't being used you can park it in the ambulance station building.

In addition to that there are five mini figures and a stretcher to carry patients into the Playmobil hospital on - fingers crossed you only get one patient being admitted at a time!

The Playmobil Hospital is suitable for young wannabe life savers aged 18 months or older and can be collected in-store for free, if you have a local Home Bargains, otherwise you'll pay up to £2.95 for home delivery.

Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen £5 @ The Entertainer

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 3 February, 2012 at 10:00 am

Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen £5 @ The EntertainerThe Entertainer are selling this Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen for a staggeringly cheap £5, rather than its full retail price of £20.

Even though it's 'poke forks in my eyes' time again - I really do loathe pink plastic play kitchens, wooden ones in non gender specific colours I can just about 'do' - this is THE cheapest I've ever seen this Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen so I feel it would be remiss of me, and against the PlayPennies principles, for me not to tell you about it.

So (deep breath) here we go...

The Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen features a hob, a toaster, a sink for doing the washing up (make the most of your little ones wanting to do that, even if it is just pretend, because when they hit 14 they won't want to do it anymore!) and an oven complete with opening door.

I'm glad about the opening door because an oven with a door that doesn't open is a pretty useless oven, in my opinion.  The Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen also comes with 14 kitchen accessories.

If you have an Entertainer local to you then you can collect your Cosy Cottage My First Kitchen for free, otherwise standard home delivery is going to cost you an addition £3.95 - even with postage this is still a GREAT deal for a little play kitchen.

Mega Bloks Squad Ultimate Set £6.99 @ Argos

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 3 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

Mega Bloks Squad Ultimate Set £6.99 @ ArgosArgos are selling this Mega Bloks Squad Ultimate Set for just £6.99, rather than the £14.99 full retail price.

With the 365 pieces that make up this Mega Bloks Squad Ultimate Set, you can build a steamroller, front loader JCB type vehicle and a pick-up truck with a trailer.

Once they've been constructed your youngster can unleash any, or all, of the three mini figures and accessories and let their imagination run riot.

Perhaps they'll be building the next great city or clearing up after a disaster, who knows!  Either way, the possibilities are endless and there are plenty of hours of fun to be had with a Mega Bloks Squad Ultimate Set.

Argos do say that styles may vary - one lady got a set of emergency vehicles - so if you have a digger fan then you might want to ask which ones your local store has in stock before you order.

The Mega Bloks Squad Ultimate Set is suitable for kids aged five years or older and is available for both home delivery (£5.95) and free in-store collection.

Up To 50% Off ELC Arts And Crafts Bits And Pieces @ Amazon

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 2 February, 2012 at 11:00 am

Up To 50% Off ELC Arts And Crafts Bits And Pieces @ AmazonAmazon are having a bit of a sale on Early Learning Centre arts and crafts bits and pieces - there are 75 individual items included in the sale and plenty of them have, or are close to having, 50% off their full retail price.

The thing with arty bits and pieces is that they often need replacing - paints and felt tipped pens run out, pencils get broken so you are forever sharpening them (which is pointless because the 'lead' inside has been shattered into a million pieces from being dropped on the floor), paper gets used and scissors (at least in my house) have the disappearing skills of Houdini!

Taking advantage of arts and crafts sales, like this, makes sound economic sense - especially when you can have everything delivered for free.

Pens, pencils, paints, paper, chalks and chalk boards are included in the Early Learning Centre arts and crafts sale, along with painting aprons (in both red and blue for boys and girls) and scissors for the right-handed masses and the minority 'lefties'.

Some things are selling out quite quickly, so if you have plenty of things to stock up on then I suggest you go over to Amazon sooner rather than later.

Celebaby: Light And Fluffy

by Sarah Macdonald in Celebaby on 2 February, 2012 at 10:00 am

Celebaby: Light And FluffyI'm tired of all the bitching, complaining, backstabbing and general 'bleurgh' that's going on - Peter and Katie are at it again (arguing and being 'mean' to each other in public, rather than 'at it'), Halle Berry and her ex, Gabriel Aubry, have been digging at each other and throwing legal action around for at least the last 18 months; so much so, in fact, that a judge has ordered them to take parenting classes for the sake of their daughter Nahla!

So today's Celebaby is nice and light and fluffy - because that's how I like things.

Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop £7.99 @ Play

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 2 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop £7.99 @ PlayPlay are selling this Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop set for £7.99 - the usual retail price is £17.99.

If you're a regular PlayPennies reader you'll know that I'm not a Play-Doh lover; that it, in fact, strikes terror into my metaphorical Axminster carpet and as a result all of my children have been Play-Doh deprived for their entire lives.

If you are braver than me, and are looking for a play set 'something' to give to a youngster, then you might want to pop over to Play, take a look at this Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop and take advantage of its (current) low price with Play.

I'm rather hoping it was priced high (I'd never pay £17.99 for it) to save the nation's carpets, but at this price it's quite a good deal - the Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop comes four cans of Play-Doh and over 40 accessories for producing some amazing Play-Doh ice cream creations.

There are pretzels creators , swirl 'machines' and even various toppings you can sprinkle on top of your ice creams to make them look even more...'tasty'!  And afterwards you'll have to contend with kids who want real ice creams having just spent hours making inedible ones.

Delivery with Play is free and the Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop is only suitable for young ones aged three years or older, due to small parts and choking hazards.

Thomas Junior Point And Learn £3.99 @ Argos

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 2 February, 2012 at 8:00 am

Thomas Junior Point And Learn £3.99 @ ArgosArgos have reduced the price of this Thomas Junior Point and Learn down to £3.99 from £6.99.

I think Thomas the Tank Engine will live forever, don't you?  I really can't see him losing childhood appeal causing all of his books, toys and other hundred-weight of merchandise vanishing from our lives.

There are lots of Thomas the Tank Engine bits and pieces you can buy for youngsters, I think this Thomas Junior Point and Learn looks quite fun for little ones just getting to grips with life, the Universe and Thomas the Tank Engine.

The Thomas Junior Point and Learn tank engine has a wheel on the side divided into sections and decorated with a picture, with an arrow in the middle pointing upwards.  Your little one must turn the dial and press the button to hear the Thomas sound, character saying or melody associated with the pictures.

Thomas Junior Point and Learn will help teach cause and effect, along with fine motor skills, and is suitable for little ones aged 18 months or more.

The batteries you need are included and you can either have your Thomas Junior Point and Learn delivered to your home (for an OTT £5.95) or you can collect it in-store for free.

Love Is - It's Your Story Book Review

by Sarah Macdonald in Reviews on 1 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Love Is - It's Your Story Book ReviewIf you're of a certain age you'll remember the two Love Is characters - that cute little naked cartoon couple, whose modesty always remained intact, and were clearly very much in love with each other.  The love bird pair were very popular in the 1970s and earned their creator, Kim Casali, between £4 and £5 million a year - not bad for some cartoon drawings!

Well, the Love Is duo seem to be making a bit of a comeback and with Valentines Day just a couple of weeks away, a personalised book featuring the Love Is characters makes for a soft and smoochy gift for the one you love.

It's Your Story specialise in personalised books and invited me to create a personalised Love Is story book - here's how I got on from start to finish.

Ben 10 Single Duvet And Fleece Set £9.50 @ Tesco

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 1 February, 2012 at 11:00 am

Ben 10 Single Duvet And Fleece Set £9.50 @ TescoTesco have reduced the price of this Ben 10 single duvet and fleece blanket set by 50 pence shy of £10, bringing it down to £9.50 from £19.

I was going to comment on stating the obvious by saying that this Ben 10 duvet and fleece blanket set was single bed size, but with an ever-increasing army of adult fans I wouldn't be surprised to see double and king-size versions.

I'm going to buy this for my eldest son, he's 17  and is leaving home in March to take up his post in the British Army (proud mummy moment, indulge me).  He's got a year at Army Foundation College first and when we went on a tour of the barracks back in September we were all rather amused to see that all the boys (who'd completed the first six weeks of training) had kiddie duvet covers - the more childish the better!

I kid you not!  There was one young soldier who had a Dora the Explorer duvet set on his bed - I'm not sure Jack would thank me for one of those, but Ben 10 I think he'll be able to 'do'.

So, the Ben 10 duvet and fleece blanket set comes with a duvet cover, pillowcase and a fleece blanket  all of which are machine washable and can be thrown in the tumble drier too.

The set is suitable for any little one who's in a single 'grown-up' bed or young soldiers about to embark on their Army career *grin*

What To Do With Clothes That Need To Be Hung When You Take Them Out Of The Drier

by Sarah Macdonald in Misc on 1 February, 2012 at 10:00 am

What To Do With Clothes That Need To Be Hung When You Take Them Out Of The DrierI tend to do the majority of the household laundry at the weekends - it just makes sense as this is when kids' school uniforms are done with for the week.

The rule is that washing needs to be in the utility room on a Friday evening or very early Saturday morning, things brought down on a Sunday afternoon will be turned away and no amount of teenage sulking or begging will persuade me to wash 'just one last thing'.

So, the washing machine is invariably working like a trooper, if it's sunny there will be things billowing on the line otherwise they'll be in the tumble drier or hanging over radiators.  When one washing load is done it will be in the basket waiting to be swapped for clean, dry things.

What to do with the dry bits and pieces that require hanging up, rather than folding, has often been cause for 'muttering' - my tumble drier is in the garage and if I get to the things inside just as they finish I can, sometimes, get away with not ironing too much and THAT can only be a good thing.

However, folding (even lightly) can ruin this crease-free happiness - so I'm rather thrilled by this parent hack (and it's a funny read too) that I've come across and am going to try it!  For things that require instant hanging...PUT THEM ON when you take them out of the tumble drier.

Genius! Sure you're going to look a bit daft (have a look at the pictures in posted by Bewildered Mother - she's the one who came up with the hack - and you'll see what I mean) but if it means less ironing then I don't CARE!

Star Wars Interceptor Radio Controlled Tank £26 @ Asda

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 1 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

Star Wars Interceptor Radio Controlled Tank £26 @ AsdaAsda have taken £6 off the full price of this Star Wars Interceptor radio controlled tank, bringing it down to £26 from £30.

If you have a young Star Wars to buy a pressie for soon, then you might want to pop over to Asda quickly and take a look at this radio controlled Star Wars Interceptor tank.

As well as being radio controlled it can carry several clone troopers, and comes with one of them, has working headlights (for storming Rebellion camps at night, of course) along with a missile launcher and a blaster pistol.

The Star Wars Interceptor tank requires four AA batteries and the radio controlled unit needs two AAAs, none of them are included.  This fact doesn't seem to have put off exisiting owners who've nothing but praise for their radio controlled Star Wars Interceptor tanks, and I quote...

"Great toy even better at the low price at ASDA. Comes with one figure which of course needs to have extra figures to go with it as my son told me. Well made with six firing bullets also good at chasing cats around the front room."

You can collect your Star Wars Interceptor tank for free from any Asda store, of you can pay £2.95 for standard home delivery.

Everythings Rosie Sweet Dreams And Raggles £7.50 @ Amazon

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 1 February, 2012 at 8:00 am

Everythings Rosie Sweet Dreams And Raggles £7.50 @ AmazonI've never seen these Everythings Rosie Sweet Dreams and Raggles soft toys before, but they look cute. Amazon are currently selling them for £7.50 instead of £29.99.

I'm not a dolly person, but soft toys?  Well, they're a whole different kettle of soft and lovely cuddliness!  I'm not sure I'd buy this pair of Everythings Rosie Sweet Dreams and Raggles for £29.99, but if I had a little girly to buy for then I'd definitely be adding them my Amazon basket.

When you tuck Sweet Dreams Rosie into bed with you, her cheeks glow and she'll sing you a soothing lullaby (who doesn't love that at the end of a tough day?!), her little bunny friend, Raggles, has a glow-in-the-dark zip on his front (he looks like a 'he') and long floppy ears for tweaking.

Sweet Dreams Rosie requires three LR44 batteries, which are included (hurrah!), and she's suitable for little ones aged two and over.

If you choose the Super Saver delivery option your Everythings Rosie Sweet Dreams and Raggles duo will be delivered for free within three to four working days; if you need them sooner than that you can pay various amounts for faster delivery.

Free Competitions: Win A Weekend At The Savoy Hotel

by Sarah Macdonald in Comps on 31 January, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Free Competitions: Win A Weekend At The Savoy HotelI love mooching around John Lewis and I'm sure I'd love it even more if I had a £1000 of John Lewis vouchers to spend rather than my own money!

If doing the same appeals to you then enter this competition.

The answer is Five and the closing date for entries is 15 March

Weekends away in London used to be something I did - they were fun and ooooh they were expensive too because I'm not a cheap B&B girl, I'm more of your Dorchester Hotel girl (I know, strange that I spend a bit of every day looking for cheap baby deals!).

A friend of mine used to be a chef at the Savoy Hotel in London and I can thoroughly recommend staying there; I recommend, further, that you win that stay rather than pay for it.

Box of Lego Wheels £9.99 @ Argos

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 31 January, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Box of Lego Wheels £9.99 @ ArgosArgos are selling this box of LEGO wheels for £9.99 with free delivery (you can't collect them in-store, this is an online offer only).

Now this deal will either leave you nonplussed or you'll be jumping up and down with joy - there won't be any in-between.  If you're wondering why on earth anyone would get excited about a box of LEGO wheels then you obviously don't have lots of LEGO in your house.

If you are in the 'jumping up and down with joy' camp, like I am, then you'll have the same HUGE storage box of mixed up LEGO that my youngest has; you, too, will also know the agony of not having enough of the right wheels to be able to build a 'million-wheeled' monster vehicle!

So, yes, JOY and RAPTURE at the mere sight of lots of different LEGO wheels all together in the same place, if only for a little while; even if we know their destiny is to join the other LEGO bits and pieces in that huge storage box, at least we'll know they're in there....somewhere!

Remember, you can't click and reserve this box of LEGO wheels - delivery is free though (normal delivery charges are £5.95) and your LEGO wheels will be with you in around four days from order.

Football Rug £5 @ Tesco

by Sarah Macdonald in Deals on 31 January, 2012 at 10:00 am

Football Rug £5 @ TescoIf you have a young football fan then they might like this football rug for their bedroom or play room floor - it's on sale for £5, instead of £10, at Tesco at the moment.

There's not much I can tell you about this football rug, really, that you won't have already worked out for yourself - it's a round rug and has been made to look like a flat football.

I can tell you it measures 75cm x 75cm and is made from cotton, which makes it machine washable at 30C AND it can be tumble dried too.  Hurrah, for being able to wash it - if you're new to 'rugs in kid's rooms' then you won't appreciate just HOW filthy they get and being able to throw this football rug is a big bonus, especially as parts of it are white, the rug can also be tumble dried too.

Now, if you're a regular PlayPennies reader then you'll know how I feel about Tesco's home delivery charges - £5, and even though that's for next day delivery I still think it's a bit much - so save yourself some cash and arrange to collect your football rug for free from your nearest Tesco store.
