That's the grandparents sorted then! Presents from the grandkids - calendars with their lovely grandchildren smiling out from each month. To be honest, trying to find something for the grandparents at Christmas time and on birthdays is really quite difficult. At that age, well, you've pretty much got everything! So something with a photo of the grandkids on it is always good, although even better, is something that the grandkids made themselves.

What I've done in the past is to get my step children to write something special for each month too, just a thought or memory of something special. It adds that little something extra to the page. And makes for quite a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon too.

The Classic Wall Calendar is £14.99. The calendar I've made before is the Glossy Wall Calendar (£19.99), which I really liked as the photos are glossy giving them that little bit of a nicer finish. The date pages, however, are not glossy so they're easy to write on. It would be really tempting to get another one of these, at a price reduction of £9.99!

Over 50% Off Selected Plus 15% Sale On All Carseats @ Halfords

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 18 September, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Over 50% Off Selected Plus 15% Sale On All Carseats @ Halfords

Halfords has a sale on carseats, for this weekend only. The store has more than 50% off on some models. In addition, you get a further 15% off any carseat. The discount is automatically applied when you go to checkout. So, for example, a Graco Logica L child car seat is on sale for £49.99, down from £119.99. And when you go to checkout, this is further reduced to £42.49.

The deal also applies to carseat bases and booster seats. To see the full range of products available in this offer, click on the link above, and then on the 'See All' link on the page that appears.

What it I like about deals like this on a car seat, is that it isn't a reduction on just one brand or model. It is worth while researching exactly what you need. Too many parents that I know simply go out and get whatever happens to be to hand or cheapest on the shelf. Or looks nice. Or is allowed to be swayed by the child's desire to have cup holders, pen holders and drawing trays.

The most important consideration is what you consider to be safe. Even if your child is five years old, you really should have them in a car seat with a back and side impact. Unfortunately, unlike the US, it doesn't seem to be possible to get Category II and III car seats in this country (or Europe) that have a five point harness system. Be careful, if this is important to you, that you don't fork out extra dosh for a car seat that says it is a five point harness system AND goes up to Category II. The chances are, when you take off the baby seat bits to make the seat large enough for the older child, it will become an ordinary three point harness seat the same as all the others.

Whizz Around Garage £25 @ ELC

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 18 September, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Whizz Around Garage £25 @ ELCThe ELC (Early Learning Centre) has made a large redcution on its Whizz Around Garage - down from £40 to £25. That's a good bargain in my book.

In my experience all children love playing with toy garages. It isn't entirely down to the cars, although that's a lot of fun too. Running them up and down the ramps, and around the floors. It is also the multi leve aspect. Having flat surfaces at different heights. My son would play for hours on these with all his toys.

The Whizz Around Garage has an age range of 12 months to 3 years. It has  two- floors, and a chunky design. The garage also has flashing lights,  sounds, 2 ramps, 1 helicopter pad, 1 lift and 2 magnetic vehicles.

Whizz Around Garage £25 @ ELCThe website describes the experience of playing with the garage too. "Push the car down the spiral ramp to hear whizzing sounds, or lift the barrier to park them on the top level of the garage. You can drive the cars onto the inspection ramp or take them to the car wash. Why not join the two magnetic cars together for extra driving fun? Press the buttons to hear realistic petrol pump sounds and see the lights flash in sequence."

Playskool Mr Potato Head Spud Buds £6 @ Debenhams

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 17 September, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Playskool Mr Potato Head Spud Buds £6 @ DebenhamsThis Playskool Mr Potato Head Spud Buds toy is on sale at Debenhams online, marked down from £15 to £7.50. You can get a further 30% off using the code PP8P, making it £6. There's also a code for free delivery - SHD1.

I always wanted one of these as a kid! Every American movie or TV show seemed to feature a Mr Potato Head, and he looked like a lot of fun. I remember playing with one at my primary school, and spending ages making different sorts of faces and putting on different feet and arms.

When my son was three he got given one, from his godmother. And showed no interest in it. Well, I thought, that's just because he is too young for it. But no. As it happened he has never, sadly, showed any interesting in playing with Mr Potato Head, building up different faces, putting on funny hats or mix and matching arms and legs.

Which is a huge shame for me as I feel a bit weird playing with the toy on my own. So, if you're not sure if your child will 'get' Mr Potato Head, at this price, you can afford to experiment a little. It would make a great auxilliary gift to put under the Christmas tree too.

Playskool Mr Potato Head Spud Buds £6 @ DebenhamsMr Potato head body and two veggie friends come with parts and pieces. Includes potato body, corn body, carrot body, 3 faces, 3 arms with props, 3 regular arms, 3 sets of feet, 2 hats and carrot top. Recommended age is 2 plus.

Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser £20 @ Tesco Direct

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 17 September, 2010 at 9:00 am

Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser £20 @ Tesco DirectThis is the same steam steriliser that I used when my son was a baby. It was passed on to two other mums that I know of! I loved it. Tesco Direct are selling the Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser for less than half price at £20 marked down from £45.

There are a lot of different steaming options, such as devices that fit in microwaves and dishwashers. But electric steam sterilisers like the Philips Avent model are still perennial favourites. Maybe everyone else is like me - I don't have either a microwave or a dishwasher! Or maybe it is a matter of trust. An electric steam steriliser is a tried and tested device. I'm never completely sure that microwaves hit all the spots evenly, and there's always the worry about residue salt when using a dishwasher.

As far as I can remember, the steam steriliser plugs in, you stick in the right amount of water and use the de-scaling sachets now and again. And it all works. There's nothing more to it than that really.

Philips Avent Electric Steam Steriliser £20 @ Tesco DirectThey've updated it a little since my day (all of five years ago!). The internal baskets can be clipped together to be used in a dishwasher as well. The Avent Express electric steam set has an 8min sterilising cycle.  It holds up to siz Avent bottles.  Also, and this is the helpful bit, it keeps its contents sterile for six hours if left unopened.

CARES Travel Harness Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 15 September, 2010 at 1:00 pm

CARES Travel Harness ReviewHave you travelled with a small child or older baby in an airplane? If they're sitting on your lap, you might get a little lapbelt that wraps around them and loops through your seatbelt. On some airlines though, they don't even provide that. I was flabbergasted to be told on Air Canada that I had to hold my baby against me, over my shoulder. And on budget airline German Wings, not only did the steward insist I do that, he wouldn't even let me use my baby carrier insisting that if I tried to do so I would be forced to disembark!

Have none of the airlines seen any car safety ads in the last thirty years? We're told repeatedly that we can't hold on to a baby when a car going 30 miles an hour comes to a sudden stop. I don't think I'd have much chance if a plane on the verge of take off or landing came to a sudden stop!

The only comfort I could take when travelling with my son at the age of 13 months (and again at 18 months, 2 years and 2 and a half years) was that statistically, planes don't really crash all that often.

CARES Travel Harness ReviewIf that seems like a cold comfort then you could try the CARES 55) - it stands for child aviation restraint system. This is a product that seems to have some sort of success in the US. According to the website it is a "harness-type safety device designed for children (aged 1-5) to keep them safe and secure on aeroplanes. Aeroplane seatbelts alone do not protect small children who cannot brace themselves."

I gave one to PlayPennies mum Tracy to try out, and see how it actually worked in practice.

What was her first impression? Perplexed initially! "Now to start with I spent a good period of time wondering why they had a picture of a baby carseat on the cover of the box. Surely no strap-in system would hold an infant in place? I still don’t know why there is a picture of a baby car seat on the box."

Understandably, this initial experience made Tracey look more closely at exactly what specifications made up the CARES. "I did find, in big bold letters, that this was suitable for kids 22-44lbs. It has been approved by the FAA for all phases of airplane travel and won the Good Housekeeping 2008 Good Buy Award to boot."

CARES Travel Harness Review"Then I opened up the box. " Tracey continued. "The restraints (snort) are wrapped in a lovely red string bag which won points in my book. Nothing more frustrating than a tangle of straps when you are busy squeezing into a plane. This way you can leave the box at home and just pop the system into your handbag. Note: a Mommy handbag not a neat chic designer one."

With the restraint you get both a DVD and an Instructional Safety Card to show you how to install the system. Tracey found that "the card amused me with its similarity to the ones you get on planes."

Finally, it was time to try it out. "So, off I went on my holiday armed with this device. The instructions ask you to slide the strap over the seat and drop down the tray of the seat behind. This did not go down well with the stressed businessman sitting behind my daughter's chair. You could see that he was already annoyed that he had to sit so close to a small human and my touching his food tray was a step too far."

Oh dear! I have to say that personally, that would put me off entirely. But Tracey is clearly made of much sterner stuff than I am. "I had to actually swap seat my daughters seat to avoid a scene. This is not the designers fault, obviously, but well worth being aware of. Fortunately the other lady made a point of being super helpful to spite angry man."

CARES Travel Harness ReviewOnce that was sorted, it was time for Tracey to actually fit the harness. "You attach the shoulder straps and adjust them to suit your child – this was easy enough although I have to say that I did make quite a few huffy noises as doing all this while bent at an unusual position on an aircraft does demand a level of gymnastic ability that I just don’t posses. Then it was simple. I slotted the plane seatbelt in, clicked it all into place and bada boom, my child was locked into place."

Tracey continues "there are two things that bothered me". To be honest I would have to say that there would be more than two things bothering me with this, but then I already find the stress almost overwhelming getting a small child and all its belongings into the economy seating of an airplane.

"First", Tracey says, "if the tray table of the chair you are using is recessed then you have to install CARES on top of it – this will just annoy the passenger who’s tray table that is. Especially when the instructions tell you to remove the system, lower the tray, reattach the system, if the person CARES Travel Harness Reviewbehind you wants to eat. That seems a LOT of effort."

"Second", she continues, "What happens if you have to get out of the system FAST? There are two buckles and two straps to get her/him out of and if you’re in a rush that’s not going to be easy. I don’t need to tell you what kind of a rush that would be either. Shudder."

And Finally

Tracey's final thoughts? "Overall this was easy enough to use once I got the hang of it, felt very sturdy and strong, made me feel like my child was safe. If you are good at wrapping stuff up you’ll be able to compact it to a tiny portable size. Your child may object to being strapped in by so many straps. Mine didn’t. She loves that."

Marshall Ward Home Shopping Online: Free Delivery

  • Discount: Free Delivery
  • Minimum Spend: £0.00
  • Voucher Code: XV044

Marshall Ward sell just about everything on their site, or so it seems. Clothing for men, women and children, plus shoes, toys, furniture, appliances and electricals. It is kind of like a designer version of the Argos catalogue. Rather handily for this time of the year, the site has a big Back To School sale on uniforms.

I love free delivery codes. It means that I can buy just one item if I like, no matter how little it might cost. Otherwise I tend to only buy from a website when there's quite a few items I want to get, to make it worth the delivery charge.

To get free delivery, enter the code above on the last page of the checkout process before you have to enter your payment details. I tried it out on a dress, and it worked just find. It only deducts the £3.95 delivery charge, so if you're buying a bigger item such as furniture you'll have to pay the excess. On a mid-sleeper bed, for example, the delivery was £6.95.

5 Ways To Save On Landline Costs

by Lynley Oram in Features on 13 September, 2010 at 1:00 pm

5 Ways To Save On Landline Costs

If you're a parent, then having a landline is crucial. You might survive on just a mobile when you're a couple or a single person. But after the kiddies start to arrive, you need something that won't run out of call credit, can be used outside of weekends/evenings, and won't cost an arm and leg to call people with other service providers.

5 Ways To Save On Landline CostsEventually, you'll be a proper multi person household. Before you can blink the kids will be using the phone, getting their own calls, and adding to the phone bill.

In an effort to cut down our phone bill last year, which thanks to lots of overseas friends and relatives kept hitting £60 a month, here's some of the helpful stuff I came across.

Call through your broadband

Get a VoIP phone - this stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. This type of service plugs into your broadband modem. Then just plug your phone handset into the VoIP device. Skype is perhaps the most famous VoIP option. In the end I chose an internet phone, but went with a Vonage plan of £10.99 per month. At the risk of soundline like an advert, I can make unlimited calls to landlines in 25 countries, at any time of the day. This includes the UK, NZ, US, Canda, Australia and Hong Kong - all the countries where I have friends or relatives. There's no time limit either. Unlike my previous package I don't have to hang up and redial before an hour is up.

The customer care is pretty good too. The call centre is in Colardo Springs, US (I asked, and my inner Stargate fan takes a vicarious pleasure in this), I've never had any trouble getting through, and have always had a prompt answer to a technical or billing enquiry.

5 Ways To Save On Landline CostsOn the downside, when my broadband is down my phone is down. You'll also lose you connection in a power cut too. Also one of my sister's lives out in the sticks in NZ, and their ancient phone exchange can't handle my VoIP phone.

I could keep my old phone number, but it took two weeks for that to transfer through and in the meantime we used a temporary new number. Which confused my aged parents somewhat, and my mother still tries to call that number!

Use the internet

You can also use Skype entirely free of charge, to make calls from your computer to another computer. Other messaging programs offer this too, like MSN or AOL Aim. You will need a headset for your computer or at least a microphone, a webcam if you want to make video calls, and the other person will need to be signed up to Skype, MSN etc. You'll only be able to call them when they are online so it isn't a substitute for a landline. But it is a cheap and easy way of making an international call as it is entirely free!

5 Ways To Save On Landline CostsIn my personal experience, I've found Skype wonderful for keeping that visual contact with family that's far away. However, the quality, especially voice quality, can be robotic at times.

Use the internet to find out information for free that you'd pay for if you called the service on your phone. So instead of one of the directory enquiry services, do a search on Yell.com. It is the online Yellow Pages, and it has residential listings too.

Say No To 0845

I love this site so much, I felt I had to give it a section on its own. The website is in fact called Say No To 0870, but most of the numbers that rack up the phone bill these days start with 0845, and the site covers these too. And lots of other number codes that cost you money.

It is almost impossible to find, say, the switchboard number of major companies these days. Using this website, I got the number for Virgin Media, and called that instead of their 0845 number. From there I was transferred to Customer Services, and got the same menu options I'd have heard had I called their usual number. This time it was entirely free though, as I'm not charged for landline calls, so for once I didn't mind having to listen to the lengthy 'Dial 1 for' lists!

5 Ways To Save On Landline CostsThe Co-Operative Bank seems to have wised up though. Calling the numbers listed for it on the website got a recording directing me to re-dial the 0845 number. However, scrolling down the page I found the switchboard number, and was immediately transferred to the correct service when I asked if I could check my bank balance.

Use an Overseas Calling Service

Even with a VoIP phone, my call costs have been reduced but I can save even more. Last year my brother lived in South Africa while he was on a course. This is not a country covered by my plan, so I used an over ride service instead. These are so-called because they by pass (or over ride) your current provider. Although there are different types, essentially they all work the same way. You dial a number to access the service, then the number that you want to call.

5 Ways To Save On Landline CostsThe website Money Saving Expert has an International Call Checker. You enter the country you want to call, and it tells you who has the cheapest rate at that point in time.

This is all a FAR cry from the days before the internet and deregulation. When I arrived in the UK in 1989, calls to NZ cost £1 a minute. The most I could afford was a 20 minute phone call home - that was £20!

Make most of current supplier

All services offer deducations (or make you pay extra depending on how you look at it) if you pay by direct debit, or opt for ebilling for example. Check the terms of your call plan. My next door nieghbour didn't realise that BT had changed the time that the evening call plan kicked in from 6pm to 7pm, and couldn't work out why her phone bills had gone up.

And Finally ...

Undoubtedly wiser and more frugal heads than mine have found cunning ways to save on their landline costs. If that's you then please do comment here and share your experience!

So, in two weeks I have to go to a wedding. And I have absolutely nothing to wear. Apart from essentials I haven't actually bought anything for myself since before my son was born, five years ago. There's no real choice in the matter. I HAVE to buy a new dress, or skirt and top.

Pre-baby, Dorothy Perkins was one of my favourite stores. They cater for shorties like me (I love that they call short people's clothes 'petite'. It doesn't feel so bad buying a size 16 when it is in the petite range!).

I found a maxi dress on the site that I quite liked, and to make it more of a bargain, it was in the sale. On the My Bag page, I entered the code, and it worked deducting 25% from the sale amount. You still have to pay delivery though. If you'd rather buy from instore, then try this link HERE. It will take you to a printable discount voucher for 25% off instore. Disney Princess Shimmering Single Rotary Duvet Set £7.99 @ Play.com

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 11 September, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Disney Princess Shimmering Single Rotary Duvet Set £7.99 @ Play.comIt's pretty, it's pink, and it is Disney Princess. What more could a little girl want? Great for parents is that Play.com are selling the set for £7.99 with free delivery. On the website it says that the recommended retail price is £14.99.

If I'm honest, then I really hate getting themed bed linen for kids. It just feels so wrong that merchandising has worked its way into every part of our lives, even bedtime. That said, in my experience a familiar face or story on the bed linen really does help when the little ones are feeling a bit insecure going to bed at night.

This duvet set features two Princesses. Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. I think we all remember the story of Cinderella - wicked stepmother, ugly stepsisters, a fairy godmother and Prince Charming. As a stepmum myself it isn't one of my favourites (the one I loathe the most is Hansel and Gretel as the witch is always a very poorly disguised step mother!).

Disney Princess Shimmering Single Rotary Duvet Set £7.99 @ Play.comBut I was suprised to find that I'd actually forgotten Belle's story. It isn't as often repeated. Belle is a dutiful daughter of an eccentric Maurice who is pursued by the vain Gaston. She swaps places with her father in the Beast's prison. Eventually though she is allowed to visit her dad, in the meantime the darstadly Gaston tries to remove his rival. But Belle rushes back to the castle, saves Beast and breaks the spell. I think this is definitely my favourite Disney oldie!

Disney Store Online: 10% Discount Code

Disney Store Online: 10% Discount Code

It might only be 10% but when it comes to buying from the Disney Store online every little helps! The Disney Store isn't the cheapest that's for sure. Unfortunately though there's merchandising available there that you just can't get anywhere else. I have a Buzz Lightyear and Lightening McQueen obsessive in the house - I know!

Click here to get 10% off the Disney Store Online

  • Discount: 10%
  • Minimum Spend: £0.00
  • Voucher Code: WDTC

When you get to the Shopping Basket page enter the code in the Special Offers and Discounts section. I tried it on a sale item, and it deducted 10% from the purchase. Standard delivery is £4.95, so to make this worthwhile you'll probably want to buy a few items.

Overall, I do like the quality of the toys from the Disney Store, and I always end up having to get at least one or two items from there every Christmas.

However, I do have one bugbear with the Disney Store. I have bought three items of clothing from there. A Lightening McQueen jacket, which has held up really well over the last three years and is still in use now even though it is a bit small. And two t-shirts, both of which developed holes around the stitched in tag almost within a week of wearing them. In addition, a year later and I've had to sew up seams, and darn up holes, in both t-shirts as well. One of them was a gift, so I don't know how much it cost. But the long sleeved t-shirt cost £22! As none of the t-shirts I bought at the same time from M&S have developed holes, I have to say I'm not impressed.

Bakugan Battle Pack £9.98 @ Amazon

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 10 September, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Bakugan Battle Pack £9.98 @ AmazonThis deal couldn't come at a better time. At the start of each school year I begin to look for stuff to replenish my presents drawer. Yesterday I stalked the aisles of a Sainsbury's Superstore cherry picking the best of their 75% off deals. This Bakugan Battle Pack is available for half price at £9.98 at Amazon, down from £19.99. This puts it firmly within the £10 limit I have for really good and best friends!

Actually I've no idea what Bakugan is. My son is still more Peppa Pig and Ben 10. But it seems to go down particularly well with older boys - I bought some last year for the 10th birthday of my friend's son. Bakugan is a game based upon the TV anime series about creatures called Bakugan and the battle brawlers who have control over them.

According to the blurb on the website the point of the game is to "answer the call to brawl and decide the fate of the galaxy." The set can be used as a standalone for two players to compete, or added to another set for a mega-boost. It contains small spheres that "magnetically morph into powerful Bakugan warriors when they roll onto the real metal gate cards."

The idea, according to the game's description is to use strategy to place your cards effectively as each card affects the battle differently. Then master your Bakugan Battle Pack £9.98 @ Amazonprecision shooting skills to roll your Bakugan into battle and win. Included in the box are:

  • 6 x Bakugan brawlers
  • 6 x Metal gate cards
  • 6 x Ability cards

Baby Bargains Including Nappies 2 For £10 @ Tesco

Baby Bargains Including Nappies 2 For £10 @ Tesco

Tesco Direct and instore are running a baby bargains sale from now until the 29th of September. The deal includes smaller items such as wipes, nappies, formula, feeding equipment, baby food, toiletries, breast pumps, nappy bins and more. Plus the big stuff too like car seats and cots. Visit the Tesco Baby & Toddler Club to find out more about what is in the sale.

It’s hard to imagine before you have children just how much your little one needs, whether it’s everyday products such as nappies and wipes or bigger, one-off, purchases like a car seat or pram, the list seems never ending. According to Tesco "the average parent-to-be in the UK spends £1,060* on essential baby items before their child is even born."

But of course that doesn't apply to PlayPennies parents because we're not the average! We only spend where we have to, and we look for canny bargains when we do. Like stocking up when these sorts of special offers are on. Below is an idea of some of the best savings that Tesco are going to offer (both instore and online).

  • Huggies Pure Wipes (pack of 64)  - Buy 1 Get 2 Free (was £2.49 each)
  • Tesco Baby Super Fit Economy Packs - 2 for £10 (was 6.49 each)
  • Pampers Baby Dry Carry Packs - 2 for £10 (was 5.97 each)
  • Pampers Sensitive Wipes (Jumbo 12 Pack) - 2 for £20 (was 14.49 each)
  • Huggies Newborn Value Box - 2 for £18 (was 11.48 each)
  • Tommee Tippee Manual Breast Pump - Half price £12.48
  • SMA Toddler Milk (900g) - Half price £3.84

Debenhams Department Stores Online: 10% Off & Free Delivery

Debenhams Department Stores Online: 10% Off & Free Delivery

The Debenhams department stores online voucher code for 10% discount on all items plus free delivery. Perfect! And great timing. It has saved me a trip to the shops, as I was about to go bra shopping tomorrow.

Get 10% off your order and free delivery with Debenhams department stores online

  • Discount: 10% and free delivery
  • Minimum Spend: £0.00
  • Promotion Code: P6CP
  • Expires: 11th September 2010

Enter the voucher code in the Promotion Code section of the Shopping Bag page. You will immediately see the 10% discount applied to your invoice. But, you won't see the free delivery appear until further on in the payment process. I'm not sure that the free delivery is dependant on the voucher code - according to the front page of the site, there's free delivery on offer until September 11th for the Debenhams.com site (not available on other Debenhams site's). Delivery normally costs £3.99.

It works with sale items too. The store has an up-to-25% sale on until the 11th as well. I used the code on a Balcony Bra, reduced to £7, and got a further 10% off. Combined with the free delivery, it makes more sense to use the website than to go into the shop, especially if you are buying just one item.

I've always loved the quality of Debenhams own brands of childrens clothes. The items I bought my step daughter cost a little bit more than other stores, but they lasted her for years. In fact, she still has a minty-blue fleecy top we got when she was 15. She's now 25!
