Razor Sharp Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 22 February, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Razor Sharp ReviewMen's razors and blades are normally kept under lock and key in supermarkets and pharmacy's these days. There's a jolly good reason for this. They're expensive, and therefore targetted by shoplifters. So when I found out about a product, the Razor Sharp12.99) that helps extend the life of a razor blade, I  figured it was worth checking out. After all, anything that helps you save money in the long term has to be a good thing, right?

My husband's facial hair grows quite quickly. He generally has to shave twice a day. He couldn't wait to get started with the Razor Sharp. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but just a sort of block thing wasn't what I had in mind. I guess I thought it was going to look like some kind of old fashioned strop.

You put shaving gel or foam on this and use it to clean your razor. According to Razor Sharp's website, blades don't become unusable because they're blunt, but because of the residue that builds up on them from use. It cites 3 to 4 days of shaving for a blade to lose its sharpness, and 7 days before they're so uncomfortable they need replacing.

It is possible to use the Razor Sharp on any kind of blade. So my husband put it to the test. After the first week we didn't notice any kind of difference. After two weeks, still no kind of difference. I hadn't read the website at this point, and it wasn't until I did that I realised what the problem might be.

We already practice everything going to lengthen the life of a razor. It isn't kept in or near the shower. The razor is fully cleaned, and dried properly after every use. And it is kept in a dry location between uses as well. My husband usually gets six weeks of use out of a blade.

The website claims that you can get 150 shaves out of a blade using the Razor Sharp. For my husband, shaving twice a day, I worked this out to be 10 weeks.

He carried on using the Razor Blade, and yes we did make it to the 10 week mark. Just. That's two weeks more than the usual technique of cleaning the razor and drying it thoroughly with a clean flannel. Not really a huge amount but it would definitely add up over time.

Micro Flex Scooter Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 21 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Micro Flex Scooter ReviewScooters are a part of modern family life now. It is about time then that we reviewed one of them for you. This particular model is the Micro Scooter Flex 99). Don't be put off by the price. I'll explain more about why we decided on this model to review, and how it is particularly good value, later.

I bet, if you're reading this and have children aged under 10, there's a scooter parked somewhere in your hallway/patio/garden shed. They make life so much easier. Children love to kick them along the pavement, and you love that they keep them moving and in a straight line towards where you're going.

There are added bonuses to having a scooter out and about with you as well. Shopping bags and other items can be hung off the handle bars when you're out. On longer trips, when children get tired you can pull them along on the scooter.

My stepson got one of the first Micro Scooters when they came out in the late 1990s. He was 12 at the time, and  it went everywhere with him. It then got pressed into service for my son, when he turned 4 and grew out of his pedal-less bike. I could have got one of the three wheeler types for him, but I figured he'd only grow out of that in a year so might as well go for the two wheel one straight off.

We've been using that for the last 18 months now, and it goes everywhere with us. Here's a handy tip if you're in London. The Natural History Museum classifies folded up scooters as pushchairs - which means they're free to leave in the cloakroom. Bonus! Worth checking the policy at your local museums.

Read on to find out more about what the Micro Scooter Flex is like to use in real life.

Buying A Baby Buggy: What You Really Need To Know

by Lynley Oram in Features on 20 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Buying A Baby Buggy: What You Really Need To KnowA baby buggy, pushchair, stroller, pram. We give the device used to push little tiny people around a lot of different name. Some are not universal, as I found when I was in Canada, where they thought it was awfully cute that I called it a pram.

The thing is, when you're a first time mum, it is really hard to decide what it is you actually need. First off, what you don't want to get is a stroller. These are sometimes called a pushchair as well. But confusingly, I've also seen prams or buggies called pushchairs too.

A stroller is a mode of transportation suited to much older babies and toddlers. Definitely not for newborns.

Now that we've got that struck off the list, you're basically left with three types of buggy to choose from. Read on to find out what they are, and whether they're any use for you. Start from the beginning as some of the features you'll need to take into consideration are the same for some or all pushchairs.

National Geographic Night-Vision Goggles £5.99 @ Argos

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 19 February, 2012 at 9:00 am

National Geographic Night-Vision Goggles £5.99 @ ArgosNow this is just what most 10 year olds want surely? Or was it only me? How cool to have a pair of night-vision goggles. Would make a great item for the present drawer too. These National Geographic Night-Vision Goggles are reduced by 50% by Argos. Down from £13.49 to £5.99.

There's still plenty available for home delivery, however it would work out cheaper to reserve and collect instore for free if you can.

Take exploring to a whole new level with these National Geographic Night-Vision Goggles. With enhanced light and sound, this high-tech head gear gives children the ultimate device for outdoor exploration. You get, included, a high-powered flash light and sonic ear listening device with automatic volume limiter to keep sound at a safe level.

Batteries are required. These take two AAA batteries, and according to the description on the website, they're not included. If you don't have any at home, you'll need to pick some up. The site recommends this for 8 years and over, and warns that they're not suitable for children under 3.

One thing I've been wondering about. What is the etiquette on giving presents that need batteries? Lets say I bought these goggles for a birthday present for one of my son's friends. As it doesn't come with batteries, should I include some? Or is it accepted that the parents will supply things like that?

50% Off All Kidswear And £1 Delivery @ Mountain Warehouse

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 19 February, 2012 at 8:00 am

50% Off All Kidswear And £1 Delivery @ Mountain WarehouseIt is one of those things that happens to you when you're a parent. Once upon a time, Sunday mornings were for recovering from the night before. Now I spend them bargain hunting online. And today was a total score! A ski jacket AND snow boots for less than £30 delivered! Head to the Mountain Warehouse. The site has a 50% sale on kidswear at the moment, AND for this weekend delivery is £1.

And it gets better. You can also get a further 20% off by using the promotional code VOUCHERCLOUD1. When you go to the Shopping Basket page, enter the code in the box on the right-hand side. It is applied automatically and works on sale items.

I am ecstatically happy this morning purely because I've been able to buy next year's winter clothing for my son at a bargain price. This included a ski jacket, reduced from £49.99 to £19.99, a saving of 60%. The 20% off  code took this down to £15.99. That's not much more than the last winter coat I bought him, and this one will be a lot warmer and suited to snow. I also took a risk on the snow boots. I hate buying shoes for children online, but snow boots are slightly different.

The boots were down from £39.99 to £14.99. The code took a total of £7 off my order, so for a decent ski jacket and a pair of boots I paid £27.98. Plus the £1 delivery, I didn't even break the £30 budget I have for clothes this month.

Boden And Mini Boden Promotional Code: 25% Off Outerwear And Free DeliveryUse this Boden and Mini-Boden online discount code to get 25% off outerwear and free delivery. I do like the style and quality of their boys clothes. Be quick though, you've only got this weekend to use the code.

  • Applies to: outerwear
  • Discount code: L101
  • Expires: 19th February 2012

To use this code go to the Shopping Bag page and enter it in the Discount Code box. For staple items where it pays to spend a bit more, like outerwear, I also like to browse the store. The free delivery code means I can pick up just one item, and not have to worry about it. Mind you at the prices they charge, it isn't like I'm only going to be spending a few quid anyway.

While you are never going to see me or my family dressed head to toe in Boden, they do make some really nice clothes. And it is lovely to have a few nice items to go in the kid's wardrobe.

So if you’re going to Boden to buy anything, it is always nice to get that little bit extra of a discount.

Moon Dough Super Value 10 Pack £11 @ Debenhams

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 18 February, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Moon Dough Super Value 10 Pack £11 @ DebenhamsThis Moon Dough Super Value 10 pack has been reduced by Debenhams by £9. Down from £20 to £11. That's a saving of 45%. A good addition to the arsenal of messy play toys and activities you've got stored away for the little ones. Or maybe you don't have to store yours away. I have to make things like the Moon Sand and Moon Dough inaccessible or otherwise I'd come downstairs to find it all spread throughout the lounge!

The Moon Dough Super Value 10 Pack is the ideal way for little ones to start their moondough adventures. Moon Dough is 'magical' modelling dough that nevers stains or dries out and is always light and pliable. With 10 colours, and free from wheat and hypo-allergenic, this pack is ideal for children three years and older.

It is free to collect instore, and delivery is free if you spent more than £30. Otherwise standard delivery is £3.99.

There are two reviews on the site, both of which are positive. "Moon Dough is excellent value, you get 10 colours which can be mixed to make more, Excellent for children with Coeliac who can't use normal Play Doh."

We have a lot of modelling stuff in the house. Moon Dough, Play-Doh, Plasticine, and Moon Sand. It is all really excellent for helping build up fine motor skills.

Rubber Ducks Pack Of 3 £1.79 @ Argos

by Lynley Oram in Deals on 18 February, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Rubber Ducks Pack Of 3 £1.79 @ ArgosRubber ducky, you're the one. Rubber ducky, you're so much fun. Even as an adult, bath's are just that little bit more fun with a rubber duck. These ducks from Argos are just gorgeous, really cut little duckies with 'personality'. And they're on sale. You can get the Rubber Ducks Pack of 3 for £1.79 instead of £3.99. That's half price.

This is a quacking great deal (groan, I know, who could resist though?). The ducks are yellow (as all the best rubber ducks are of course), and are made of PVC. Each duck measures 10.5cm high, 8cm wide, and 11cm deep. It is out of stock for delivery but when I checked there were plenty at the ten nearest stores to me. You can reserve and collect instore.

There are a number of good reviews on the site. One commenter writes "I bought these for my friends daughter who came to stay with us for the weekend. What can I say? They are my personal childhood favourite and they definitely provided this little girl with bath time fun!"

I didn't have a rubber duck when I was a kid. In fact, we didn't have bath time toys at all. Maybe that wasn't quite the done thing then? I always wanted one though, and was thrilled when one of the presents I was given when my son was born contained a rubber duck. It still sits there on the side of the bath now. This would make a superb gift set.

Five Fabulous Easy And Cheap Craft Ideas For Holidays And Weekends

by Lynley Oram in Features on 16 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Five Fabulous Easy And Cheap Craft Ideas For Holidays And WeekendsThe weather was gorgeous first thing this morning. Bright sunshine, blue sky. The weather forecasts were wrong! I thought to myself. According to the forecast for around here it was going to rain today, and every day for the rest of the half term week. In preparation I'd come up with several ideas for indoor craft activities. Stuff that my son, with maybe a friend around, could easily do mostly on his own.

But sadly, all that preparation isn't going to waste. It is late morning now and already sprinkling with rain outside. Looks like the weather chaps were right after all. Boo. Hiss. Anwyay, if you're stuck indoors, or just need to file away some ideas for rainy days on weekends and holidays, here's some rather fabby ideas I found on the internet.

It does not work on items already reduced in the sale, unfortunately. Most mums are familiar with the NCT from their classes and groups, as well as their pre-owned sales held in church and community halls. The website also sells just about everything new mums might need, just like most other baby and mummy online retailers.

  • Promotional code: PENNYNCT

To use this code, go to the View Basket page and enter it in the Promotional Code box. The discount is shown in a slightly odd way. On the page there is the price of the item, which is the amount before, VAT, then it will say that your 10% code has been applied, and you'll see this in the totals column. However this is where it is slightly confusing as the totals column shows the total with VAT included.

I tested it out on this absolutely gorgeous Cocooi Swaddling Babywrap, priced at £35 excluding VAT. Once the 10% discount was applied and VAT added the total came to £31.50. Delivery in mainland UK costs £3.95, or if you spend £50 or more, it is free.

Bananagrams, Appletters, Fruitominoes Review

by Lynley Oram in Reviews on 14 February, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Bananagrams, Appletters, Fruitominoes ReviewMost children love to play games. My son is not most children. He's only just got into playing something that has rules - he's six, nearly seven. Snakes and Ladders is a favourite, as is Ludo. But now that he's found out how much fun games are there's no stopping him.

These games from Bananagrams are about the best thing I've ever come across. Banangrams is in fact the first game they made, but they've since added to the brand. All with a fruit theme. And all designed to be good looking, have a sense of quality, and be portable.

We got three for review, Bananagrams, Appletters and Fruitominos. Here's how my family (and some friends) got on with them.
