Lindt Lindor Chocolate Egg £3.75 @Debenhams

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 9 April, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Is it wrong to be thinking about chocolate already, so soon after Easter? ILindt Lindor Chocolate Egg £3.75 @Debenhams just can't help myself when Debenhams put temptation in my way in the shape of this delicious Lindt Lindor chocolate egg, down from a hefty £7.50 to a mouth-watering £3.75.

There are loads of other yummy chocolate eggy treats at Debenhams right now, but I'll leave you to seek them out - that's the point of an egg hunt, after all.

Lindt Lindor Chocolate Egg £3.75 @DebenhamsThis Lindt Lindor egg is a bit special though - if you've never tried one of these and are a chocolate fan you really should indulge yourself. The mini versions are one of my guilty pleasures and I'm not sure how I'll cope when they discontinue them until next Easter.

Sigh. I can practically smell the divine chocolate naughtiness through my screen.

Just For Mums: BaBee Card

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Features on 9 April, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Just For Mums: BaBee CardI don't know how I haven't heard about this until recently, but BaBeeCard is something worth knowing about if you're a Mum. Specifically designed with Mums and Mums-to-Be in mind, it is basically a prepaid MasterCard that you top up with funds and then use to pay for items as you wish. You can use it to pay for purchases wherever MasterCard is accepted.

BaBeeCard is not a credit card, charge card or debit card. It is a prepaid debit card that you load up with funds and spend as you wish. Each time you use the card, the purchase amount is deducted from the available balance. It's like a "Pay-As-You-Go" account, with funds loaded to be spent as you please. There are no credit checks involved as no borrowing facility is provided, and using your card you can claim discounts of up to 20% at a number of high street retailers. You can top up your card for free by bank transfer or instantly by debit card for a fee of £1.

A BaBee card is ideal if you don't have a debit card - or as a gift. You can buy one for someone special and treat them by topping it up with additional funds from time to time. And unlike a standard debit card, you can earn money from your BaBee Card by recommending it to your friends, and the BaBee Discount Club can save you up to £1000 on purchases, while BaBee Card gives £1 to BLISS, the charity for premature babies, for every card purchased.

With over 100 High Street retailers as part of their discount club, BaBeeCard helps families save on groceries, petrol, baby & child goods and big ticket items such as holidays, home furnishings and cars.

Just For Mums: BaBee CardOn an average grocery spend of £300 per month, a family shopping at ASDA or Sainsburys could save £15 per month with their BaBeeCard, so the initial purchase price of £9.95 for a 2 year card is covered off in the first month of saving.

They also offer a money back guarantee so if the cardholder hasn't saved the initial purchase price in the lifetime of the card they will refund the £9.95 (This is subject to T&Cs.)

For Mums on a budget, the BaBee Card strikes me as an ingenius way to keep control of household spending.

It's the brainchild of mum Gemma Johnson who says she felt overwhelmed during her pregnancy with the vast assortment of mother and baby products available, the cost of preparing for her new arrival and the financial vulnerability that accompanies changing from a salaried position to living on maternity pay.

Gemma wanted to create a payment solution that would enable all women to take control over their finances and maximise the discounts available in the marketplace. As her website explains:

"BaBee Card primarily focuses on mums-to-be, new mums and women with families, bringing to them the opportunity to spend within their limits, to redeem against discounts and promotions, getting more for their money and enabling them to cut their cloth according to their means without fear of overspending."

The idea behind allowing friends and family to load funds onto the card from any UK location came from the fact that not all of Gemma's friends and family could join her to celebrate the arrival of her baby but they were all keen to send gifts. As Gemma explains, BaBeeCard allows others to be a part of your special occasion irrespective of location, and all money loaded onto the BaBeeCard eJust For Mums: BaBee Cardnables the cardholder to get more for her money through utilising the discount scheme.

My friend's Grandmother used to joke about her 'running away fund' and although I'm not advocating the need for one of those, I think it's a great idea to set aside a stash of money that is just for you. As Mums we often scrimp when it comes to spoiling ourselves, and I quite like the idea of getting a BaBee Card and using it as my treats fund. I couldn't go overboard as the budget wouldn't allow me to load it with funds that I don't have but I love the idea of always knowing there's a card in my bag with enough for a mag and giant cup of hot chocolate just waiting to be used, along with all the benefits associated with the card. I also think it's a lovely idea for a gift for an expectant Mum.

If you've got a BaBee Card, leave us a comment and let us know what you think!

You can order your BaBee Card online here.

Happyland School Bus Set £8 @ELC

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 9 April, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Happyland School Bus Set £8 @ELC

The Early Learning Centre's Happyland characters and toys are sure to keep little people happy, and this bus set is down from £10 to £8 right now.

Suitable for children aged between 18 months - 4 years, this set scores an impressive 4.9 out of a possible 5 points in customer reviews.

The set comprises a three-seater bus, the driver, two children, an all-important lollipop lady, as well as a bus stop and a set of traffic lights.

My lads loved Happyland toys when they were younger and the great thing about them is that there are loads of different themed sets and characters, so they can build up quite a collection thanks to birthdays and Christmas. They still play with them now and they're among the most durable toys we've owned.

Be happy!

Maternity Wrap Dress £49 @Haute Mama

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 8 April, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Maternity Wrap Dress £49 @Haute MamaThese days, finding stylish but practical clothes when you're pregnant is easier than ever. But even with a huge array of retailers who understand how important it is to look and feel good when you're expecting, it can still be a challenge to find the perfect maternity outfit for those big occasions during your pregnancy, like a wedding. If you're in that boat, this beaded wrap dress could be the answer to your preggy prayers.

Usually a rather eye-watering £149, this beaded wrap dress by Maternal America is now just £49!

The description says: 'Ultra-flattering and flirty, this wrap-me-up-and-take-me-out dress is perfect for dinners, holiday parties and anywhere you want to feel like a million bucks.'

It's obviously not exactly the sort of thing you'll be able to wear a million times - unless you get invited to a lot of weddings or plan to have a lot of babies - but if you're looking for a special dress and don't mind splashing out, this could be a lovely investment.

Up To £100 Off Summer Toys @Mothercare

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 8 April, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Up To £100 Off Summer Toys @MothercareI don't know about you but in our neck of the woods we're already feeling summery. Yesterday we walked on the beach, dragged the garden furniture out of hibernation and even stopped the ice cream van for a cold treat after tea. So what better way to keep the summer buzz going than with up to £100 off summer and outdoor toys at Mothercare?!

You can save 30% off the usual price of this baby wetsuit, now £13.99, down from £19.99. It's for babies aged 3-6 months and according to Mothercare is ideal for baby swimming lessons, as it keeps baby warmer in the water for longer while the nylon outer layer makes it significantly easier to carry a wet and wriggly baby!

My lads loved being in the water from when they were just weeks old so if you're expecting a baby this summer, this could be a tidy little investment, and items like this tend to re-sell for decent prices on sites like Folk.

Up To £100 Off Summer Toys @MothercareThere's also 50% off this funky foam hopscotch game, which is reduced from £15.00 to £7.50. The foam shapes are easy to slot together, making it transportable and suitable for use both indoors and outdoors.

According to Mothercare it's suitable for children aged 3 and upwards, and can even help little people get to grips with co-ordination and counting.

Danielle Lloyd's Baby Bump & Beyonce Pregnant?

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Celebaby on 8 April, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Danielle Lloyd's Baby Bump & Beyonce Pregnant?Expectant Mum Danielle Lloyd is blooming!

The glamour model and Celebrity Big Brother star is expecting a baby with fiance Jamie O'Hara, and the couple are currently on holiday in Dubai along with Danielle's parents.

Danielle can't hide her bump or her excitement about the arrival of her first child, and tweeted: 'Yeahhhh 6 months gone today. Not long to go till baby O'Hara gets here.'

The Daily Mail reports that Danielle recently confessed to craving corned beef hash and having a huge appetite during her pregnancy. If that's true  we reckon pregnancy must suit her because she looks blooming marvellous to us!

Danielle Lloyd's Baby Bump & Beyonce Pregnant? While Danielle Lloyd is happily showing off her bump, A-lister Beyonce seems to be intent on covering up amid rumours that she and husband Jay-Z are expecting their first baby.

Beyonce was pictured recently wearing some very short shorts. Are her efforts to show off her legs just a way of drawing attention away from her midriff?

Who knows. My money is on Beyonce having a bun in the oven and I might even wear a pair of denim hotpants myself if her people don't announce her pregnancy within the next few weeks.

All the signs are there; the denials from her publicist, the awkward pose with her hand across her tummy and of course the age-old show-off-your-legs trick when trying to hide a bump.

But only time will tell...

£9.99 Flights @Ryanair

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 8 April, 2010 at 7:00 am

£9.99 Flights @RyanairAnyone else in need of a holiday? How do you fancy a flight to somewhere exotic for £9.99?

The deal is that Ryanair are offering 1 million seats at £9.99 but you only have until midnight tonight to book, and you have to travel between May and June. The fares don't include optional fees or charges so my advice would be don't get too excited about any price you find until you've actually parted with your credit card details - these 'optional fees and charges' are often whacked onto your booking at the eleventh hour, long after you've done a happy dance and packed your case (such as these increases in charges our sister site Bitterwallet recently reported).

£9.99 Flights @RyanairApplicable days are Mon-Sun and there's a blackout period from Thurs 27 May - Tues 1 June to and from the UK, and from Thurs 3 June - Tues 8 June.

Cheap flights mean only one thing - a budget airline, so don't expect any frills but if you're prepared to be flexible about where and when you travel and don't mind spending some serious time scouting for flights, this could be a great way of booking yourself a little trip to the sun without it costing an arm and a leg.

Gwen Stefani & Minnie Driver

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 7 April, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Gwen Stefani & Minnie DriverCheck out Gwen Stefani's groovily-attired youngest son, Zuma Rossdale!

Gwen was pictured along with husband Gavin Rossdale and sons Zuma and Kingston as they strolled to a friend's house in Malibu on Easter Sunday.

Both boys wore bunny-themed outfits but it's little Zuma's funky legwarmers that caught my attention.

As a Mum to two boys I've often considered resorting to tights on chilly days but thought better of it. They seem such a funky and handy option for girls and there doesn't seem to be an alternative for boys but maybe baby legwarmers are the way to go!Gwen Stefani & Minnie Driver

Minnie Driver's son Henry has no need for legwarmers this Easter weekend, as he was pictured playing on a Malibu beach with his celeb Mum.

The papers are speculating that Minnie was taking her mind off the box-office flop of her latest movie, Motherhood, which tells the story of a stressed mum struggling to juggle raising her family with a writing career. According to the Daily Mail it was reportedly watched by only one person on its opening day, making only £9, and  "over the entire opening weekend, no more than 12 people went to see the film, which cost $5million to make". Disappointing though that must be, I reckon Minnie has better things to do than worry about that when she has such a happy little beach dude for a companion.

Review: Dr Bronner's

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Reviews on 6 April, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Review: Dr Bronner's

Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap is the USA’s No. 1 selling natural soap brand and a leader in organic and fair trade skincare. Famous fans reportedly include Drew Barrymore, Sandra Bullock and Eminem, and make-up artist Bobbi Brown championed the brand on The Oprah Show, saying: “It’s probably the finest soap in the universe. I’m obsessed with it. I cannot get enough of it!”

Now Dr Bronner's is lathering its way into British homes and hearts. So what's so special about it? The magic of Dr. Bronner’s is its affordability and versatility, with 18 uses from 1 bottle of liquid soap at £4.99 per 236ml bottle. Best used with a cloth, towel, loofah or sponge you can use it to clean your body, your mouth & teeth, your fruit & vegetables, your bathroom and kitchen, your clothes and even your pets!

It's available in 8 main varieties, the original being the famous tingly peppermint - Review: Dr Bronner's “nature's own unsurpassed fragrant Deodorant!” - followed by Lavender, Eucalyptus, Citrus, Almond, Rose, unscented Baby Mild and Tea Tree which can even be used to treat minor cuts.

The soaps are most popular for at-home washing, but are also the soap of choice for many campers and hikers. They contain no synthetic foaming agents, thickeners, preservatives, fragrances, dyes or whiteners and use 100% post consumer recycled (PCR) cylinder bottles and paper labels. Completely biodegradable, the soaps are made with certified Fair Trade and organic ingredients sourced from India, Ghana, Palestine, Israel, and Sri Lanka.

Dr Bronner’s tell us that they take their organic credentials very seriously unlike many “natural” body care companies who masquerade their synthetically derived ingredients by using floral water as the main natural ingredient, while the functional ingredients are petrochemical derived and thus non-sustainable.

The 100% Pure Castile Soap recipe used in Dr. Bronner’s soap is a simple, ecological, vegetable based formulation, named after the Castile region of Spain where olive oil soaps where invented long ago. The high foaming lather of the soap is from its high coconut oil content, which makes a more luxurious and rich lather compared to any detergent formulation commonly found even in “natural stores.”

Review: Dr Bronner's Dr. Bronner’s superfat their soaps with organic hemp and jojoba oils for a milder, smoother lather and use natural plant-derived vitamin E and citric acid to protect freshness. Apart from flavouring organic essential oils such peppermint, the base soap ingredients are Water, Saponified Organic Coconut, Organic Palm and Organic Olive Oils, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Essential Oils, Citric Acid, Vitamin E.

So what did our reviewer think? The first item we passed their way was Dr Bronner's Organic Baby Balm. Here's what they had to say:

"Loved the packaging.  The sliding lid is fantastic for taking around in the nappy bag.  The product dosen't feel greasy and absorbs very quickly.  Perfect for our baby's dry skin.  Even I have used this as a moisturiser on my elbows and they feel great now!"

Our reviewer loved this item and although they thought it was a little on the expensive side at £3.95, they  felt the price was justified because of the organic nature of the item.

The second item we reviewed was liquid soap from Dr Bronner's. Our reviewer felt Review: Dr Bronner's the travel size of the packaging made it perfect for an overnight bag. But how did it work?

"I couldn't bear to use it as a toothpaste replacer - too soapy.  I used it as a shower gel using a sponge.  Bottle was not flexible enough to squirt it out like a shower gel, so I would have liked to see a product that was more suited to a shower gel application. At £5 for 236ml I felt this was expensive for an item that I do not really use except for in the shower.  I did try some in the bath for bathing my daughter and it seemed OK."

Finally, the pure castile soap. Our reviewer, a Dad, reckoned this feels really good for cleaning the face. He even tried it out for shaving:

"Had a shave with the pure castile soap and a shave brush and found my face was very clean although I had to moisturise afterwards as my skin had dried out.  The foam was softer than a traditional shave foam but thought it was a good alternative.  My face felt a lot cleaner aswell."

At £3.50 for a 140g bar our reviewer felt this was reasonably priced, albeit more expensive than their usual brand.

Review: Dr Bronner's "I would normally buy a brand which is about a third of the price but the Dr Bronner bar does not break down like my usual brand. I would be happy to pay for a better product like Dr Bronner's that is natural and organic, and I feel safe that this is a safer product to be bathing my child in."

With each of the soaps, our Daddy reviewer would have preferred a scent but did acknowledge that they seemed like very good quality soaps, despite the lack of scent.

Dr. Bronner’s is available UK nationwide including Liberty, select Waitrose stores and leading health shops including Fresh & Wild, Planet Organic and Whole Foods. To find your nearest stockist call 0845 072 5825 or visit www.kinetic4health.co.uk

At this price this is also a sweet idea for a pressie idea for any little people you  might know who are big Fifi fans.

Unusually, this toy comes with batteries, too. Bonus!

Review: Tailball

by Heidi Scrimgeour in Reviews on 5 April, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Review: TailballMy boys, aged 3 and 5, are tennis mad, having recently discovered the joys of being allowed to smack a ball with a racquet. They spend so much of their little lives being told to stop hitting that it must come as a relief to be introduced to a game that actually requires you to hit something.

So when our Tailball set arrived from Mookie, they were beside themselves with excitement about getting it set up. A cross between tennis and badminton, tailball is a game for children aged 3 years and above. You basically erect the net using the poles and various bits and pieces enclosed in the sturdy plastic carrying case, and then use the 2 racquets to hit the the snazzy tailball back and forth across the net.

Our first challenge was getting the net set up, and this wasn't easy. I was glad Daddy was on hand to help us get sorted. It's definitely not something my children could have set up by themselves and that made for a fairly frustrating 20 minutes while they were desperate to get playing, and we were squabbling over the instructions.

Review: TailballOnce the net is in place, the base needs to be filled with sand or water in order to make it steady. I can see the sense in this design and think it would be a great feature for taking to the beach, but in the garden it was something of a pain. My kids couldn't resist walking into the next and making it fall over, so it was prett unusable without filling the base, but we didn't have any sand to hand and when we started running the outside tap they got massively distracted and tried to drown each other instead. Sigh. I love the premise of this game - I love the fact that you can put everything you need in the plastic carrying pack and strap it to your back - in fact that is my son's favourite feature of the Tailball set and he is currently pretending he's going to the airport, wearing the whole thing on his back. But the logistics of getting set up are not easy: be warned. Maybe if you set it all up in your garden and left it there it would be less stressful than setting it up from scratch each time you want to play with it.

My lads were desperate to see the famous tailball itself but the packaging that the ball came in was broken, so another ten minutes of frenzied whining ensued while I tried to wrestle the ball free without anyone nipping their fingers on the sharp edges of broken plastic. Even without the breakage, the ball is hard to get in to and that is frustrating for little ones. My advice would be to open this up and get it all set up before introducing children into the equation!

My kids found it hard to hit the ball over the net with the racquets - but they Review: Tailballadored the foam Tailball. According to the manufacturer, the unique flight allows you to hit the soft ball as hard as you can without losing control. It can fly high up in the air and will always land the right way up, ideal for developing hand-eye co-ordination. The Tailball streamers slow and stabilise the ball making throwing, striking and catching easier. Brilliant.
I only wish the set came with a spare ball because my boys love the ball so much they quickly abandoned the racquets and invited their own game of lobbing the ball back and forth across the net, and it's probably only a matter of time before the ball gets lost, rending the whole thing much less fun.
Overall I think this would be a brilliant buy for taking on holiday or just making the school holidays more fun at home. It's probably suited to children who are a little older than mine but with a bit more practice I think this will become a firm family favourite. I think it probably comes into its own on the beach, where filling the base with sand will be a fun and simple way of making it sturdy, and we can't wait to try it out on our next visit to the beach. You can nab your own set from your nearest Toys R Us.
