Insectosaurus Costume £4 @ Tesco

By Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 31 December, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Insectosaurus Costume £4 @ TescoKids love costumes. Nearly as much as mums love bargains.

Little fans of the movie Monsters Vs Aliens will love this Insectosaurus suit, with matching claw gloves. It’s a snip at £4.00 but do bear in mind that the long sleeved top and trousers pictured are not included.

You can also get costumes for the characters Missing Link and Dr Cockroach but these are a weeInsectosaurus Costume £4 @ Tesco bit pricier at £6.00, presumably because trousers are included.

Dressing up costumes are so much harder to lose or break than toys, so we seem to get loads of  mileage out of them in our house. We all know that anything that encourages imaginative play is a real bonus for kids, too. And my favourite thing about dressing up costumes is that they give you a legitimate reason to laugh at your kid, and get away with it.

In the Night Garden Upsy Daisy Tri Scooter £14.99 @ Sainsburys

By Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 31 December, 2009 at 4:00 pm

In the Night Garden Upsy Daisy Tri Scooter £14.99 @ SainsburysExercise! Fun! In the Night Garden! All this for only £14.99 from Sainsbury’s. Yes, I am a little excited. I’m going slowly broke as I buy up all these amazing deals for myself and my kids. She thinks Christmas is every day. Eek!

Originally retailing for £29.99, the scooter is down to half its original price. Delivery will cost you about £4 which isn’t bad considering the weight and size of the product. These toys are excellent for developing balance skills and for burning off all of their excess energy.

The Tri Scooter comes with an adorable Upsy Daisy figure mounted on the handlebars – sort of like the sights on an old Mercedes – and has three wheels for extra stability. It’s ideal for kids over the age of three and the handlebars can be adjusted to suit all heights and sizes. In the Night Garden Upsy Daisy Tri Scooter £14.99 @ Sainsburys

The footplate has anti-slip material on it and the bike does require some assembly when it arrives. I do love the colours and the fact that I get 28 Nectar points when I buy it. A most excellent deal.

Philips Whole Fruit Juicer (RRP£99.99) £29.99 @ Comet

By Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 31 December, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Philips Whole Fruit Juicer (RRP£99.99) £29.99 @ CometAhhh, January is nearly upon us. The month of diets and detoxing. Groo. So how about a shiny new gadget to help you ease into a healthy new regime?

This Philips Juicer has 650 watts of power and a snazzy stainless steel finish. It’s a 2 speed centrifugal juice extractor with pulse control, which basically means you can pulverise pretty much any fruit or vegetable and end up with a glass of super-healthy juice. Apparently you can hold a glass straight underneath the spout to collect your fresh jPhilips Whole Fruit Juicer (RRP£99.99) £29.99 @ Cometuice.

This has to be a winner when it comes to persuading little people to get their 5 a day. Most kids will turn their nose up at vegetables – but what if you let them juicie them first? It’s got to be worth a try. They might refuse to  eat boiled carrots but whizz one up with an apple and tell them it’s magic orange juice and I bet they’ll be tempted. Fab price, too.

With thanks to whizzkid on HUKD.

Kidspace Cool cabin bed 67% off £79 @ Littlewoods

By Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 31 December, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Kidspace Cool cabin bed 67% off £79 @ LittlewoodsIf you’re looking to redecorate your kids rooms or add some new furniture then this deal may grab your attention. Littlewoods have marked down this cabin bed from £239.99 to £79.00, with a saving of £160.

The bed has to be assembled and comes in at 76.7cm high, 97.5cm wide and 196cm long. The mattresses are not included in the deal but there are some great special offers on mattresses right now so you could potentially get both for a good price.

Currently the only colour available is light walnut and the bed comes with drawers included. I’m going to be honest here, considering the reviews the product has had I’m thinking that it should have retailed at the current price not the £200 odd it originally sold for. Kidspace Cool cabin bed 67% off £79 @ Littlewoods

All the reviewers suggest that the bed is extremely heavy and difficult to assemble. I would advise starting out with the bed positioned against the wall right from the start so you don’t pull a muscle moving it into position when you’re done. Check out the reviews on the site before you buy.

5 Tips For The Family Budget

By Heidi Scrimgeour in Features on 31 December, 2009 at 12:00 pm

5 Tips For The Family Budget

Following on from last week’s feature on family budgeting, qualified life coach Lisa Wynn and founder of Coaching for Dads offers Playpennies readers some exclusive tips for making household finances work:

Few of us are really good at living like a monk! Be realistic about your budget and create enough financial ‘space’ or provision for the things that make life feel right for you. You can always trim this back if necessary when you’re working out the overall figures.

Check your budget feels right. If it feels austere then it you’re obviously less likely to stick to it. If, for instance, you are saving for a special holiday then you might be tempted to make the budget harsh so that you can go on holiday sooner. Be honest with yourselves – you might make the holiday more likely if you postpone it six months and allow yourselves a meal out once a fortnight. A budget needs to balance the future with the present.5 Tips For The Family Budget

Have a theme or goal for your budget. Most budgets are set as a restrictive thing – cut down on this or that. Instead, think of it as a means to an end – have an exciting goal such as ‘Raising Funds for a New Car/Holiday’ or ‘Pay off the mortgage  5 years early’ or a mantra/theme such as ‘getting free, creating choices’.

Personalise your budget – name the columns with titles that make you smile! If you are saving to start a new business for instance then label that savings pot as ‘telling the boss where to go savings’ or write your favourite holiday destination at the top of a savings column – keep telling your emotional brain why you’re doing this and the budget is much more likely to be something you stick to.

5 Tips For The Family BudgetMake this an opportunity to practice talking to each other about money and about what you want in life. You are doing yourselves such a favour by setting a budget – especially if you stick to it.  Add to that favour by discussing what is really important to your family – how can money help you to make those important things happen? In this way money becomes an exciting vehicle rather than a plague we have to put up with.

Armed with Lisa’s good advice, what better time to get to grips with overhauling the family finances than the start of a new year? Looking at your budget is a daunting prospect, there’s no denying that, but the longer-term benefits of doing so usually make a few hours of number-crunching well worth it.

5 Tips For The Family BudgetI know that getting to grips with our household income and outgoings actually  helped to alleviate a lot of stress. Ignorance isn’t always bliss; not knowing what we were really spending from month to month or where we were wasting money was more like denial and I definitely sleep easier at night knowing that we’ve taken steps to get our finances in order. So if you fancy a debt-free 2010 or even just a more penny-wise New Year, why not take a deep breath, dig out the calculator and overhaul your family spending. And remember Lisa’s advice; it’s not about living like a monk, but about making your money go further.

Roald Dahl Collection £15.99 @ The Book People

By Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 30 December, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Roald Dahl Collection £15.99 @ The Book PeopleTo me, no other books sum up childhood like those written by Roald Dahl.

According to The Book People’s website the usual retail price for this classic collection is £85.85 making this a saving of over £69. The books are all paperback and the suggested suitable age is 7-12 year-olds. Although my kids already listen to most of these stories on CD so I wouldn’t be put off this deal just because you have younger children in mind; it’s also the sort of thing that can be put away to be enjoyed in  years to come.

The books in this collection are:

  • Fantastic Mr Fox
  • The Witches
  • The Twits
  • James and the Giant Peach
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • The BFG
  • The Magic Finger
  • The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me
  • Boy Take of Childhood
  • Matilda
  • Danny the Champion of the World
  • George’s Marvellous Medicine
  • Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
  • Esio Trot
  • Going Solo

The nightly ritual of the bedtime story is hands down one of my favourite parts of being a parent and as my kids get old enough to concentrate that little bit more, I’m loving rediscovering classics from my own childhood with them. This is a really lovely set and one I can’t resist. I’m itching to retrace Danny’s footsteps and watch my boys’ faces light up as they encounter the Champion of the World for the first time. Priceless.

Depending on where you live (the Highlands and Islands aren’t eligible, alas) if you enter the code ‘204A1H’ in the promotions tab  at checkout you’ should also get free delivery on your order. It’s like Christmas all over again.

Cot £39 @ Ikea

By Heidi Scrimgeour in Deals on 30 December, 2009 at 6:00 pm

If you wish, you can spend £500 on a cot for your baby. Probably more, if you’re Cot £39 @ Ikea Wayne Rooney.

Perhaps one of the most overwhelming things about expecting a baby is knowing where to start in terms of all the kit you need. You can spend a fortune without really knowing what’s worth splurging on and what you can afford to live without. That’s why I LOVE this cot. £39! I don’t know of a cheaper one on the market. Heck, even the mattress costs more than that and in lots of baby shops you’d be hard pushed to find a blanket this cheap.

Now, granted, your baby’s first cot might not be something  you want to be frugal about. I know my firstborn’s grandparents were desperate to pay for something substantial like their first grandchild’s cot, and we all harboured a vague idea that it might become a family heirloom; something to pass down to future generations.
The truth is it’s stashed in our spare room and my kids play rockets in it every chance they can get.  At this rate I don’t know if it’ll survive their generation, never mind the future.

But that’s why I like this so much. It’s cheap as chips and yet it does the job. I can vouch for that because our kids’ Scottish granny got one for her spare room and almost 5 years after she bought it it’s still going strong, and that’s after 4 grandchildren have done significant stints of sleeping in it at various stages over those 5 years. It might not have the wow factor that some of the more expensive models have, and it probably won’t win any style awards, although I actually happen to really like its pared-down, simple look. But it’s much more sturdy and durable than I expected for this price.

In hindsight I’d have been totally happy to have this cot at home, and to have had a few extra quid to spend on extra-strength coffee to get me through those early days with a newborn. If you’re looking for a reliable but basic cot, either to keep down the costs of having a baby, or as a spare at Granny’s house, you could do worse than this.

The bed base can be placed at two different heights and its assembled size is as follows: length: 124 cm, width: 66 cm, height: 80 cm, bed width: 60 cm, bed length: 120 cm.

This cot rocks. Er, no pun intended. It doesn’t ACTUALLY rock but you know what I mean.

Hopscotch Game 3.99 @ Argos

By Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 30 December, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Hopscotch Game 3.99 @ ArgosHop into action with this divinely delightful hopscotch game from Argos. Down from £9.79 to only £3.99, this foam set is just a fantastic find. I love it.

I adored hopscotch as a kid, couldn’t get enough of it. I was gutted when I realised that I was supposed to have grown out of it.

Needless to say, now that my daughter is of an age when this is something she would enjoy I’m finding myself feeling the same old excitement all over again.

Although back then we made do with a chalk outline on the pavement and an unfortunate nearby stone.

Sadly my adult balance and reflexes mean that it isn’t quite the challenge it used to be. But before I dissolve in the tears ofHopscotch Game 3.99 @ Argos memory let me tell you that my daughter practically fell onto my lap when she saw this on the screen. Bright colours, lovely throw pieces and clever interlocking parts mean it’s a doddle to clean and tidy up.

They are going quite quickly so take a look and grab one of these for indoor hopping or outdoor fun.

Thomas The Tank Engine Stackable Storage Unit £8.99 @ Argos

By Tamsin Oxford in Deals on 30 December, 2009 at 10:00 am

Thomas The Tank Engine Stackable Storage Unit £8.99 @ ArgosIt’s time to tidy up with Thomas the Tank Engine! This uniquely designed unit will be loved by the kids and by you – who wouldn’t want something that could potentially inspire our offspring to tidy up by themselves? Marked down from £14.99 to £8.99 this unit is a winner from Argos.

The price includes only one unit and does require some self assembly. While I know this is somewhat off the topic I have to confess to crying with laughter at the addition on the Argos site – Self assembly: 1 person recommended. What happens if you introduce another one? Will the unit self destruct?

You’ll likely have to call and reserve these for yourself as stock is fairly limited but there are several different desigThomas The Tank Engine Stackable Storage Unit £8.99 @ Argosns to choose from.

Those of you who have Thomas fans in your home will know exactly which one they’ll want for storing their toys. If you get more than one you can stack them neatly in the room.

Personally I’m dithering between Thomas or Gordon. Gordon matches her room better…
